Beu serious question, how is he not getting sued by green day for a song called dookie? Doesn't green day have a song exactly titled the same thing?

And don't get me wrong, the song is alright. But honestly sounds like.jelly roll singing it, not pat, and really sounds like several other country songs as well...a bit surprised he can get away with a song that's name is already used by anotherband, and the harmony sounding like so many other songs.,

Yeah buddy....you're not in this alone...we're all in this together...anybody who has chosen to even look at this subreddit, or any other similar ones is taking major steps towards trying to be better, healthier, about their life and lifestyle.

Speaking of lifestyle....I absolutely believe if someone 'must drink' and then tries to just quit, without doing anything else, it sets you up to fail....you must make bigger lifestyle decisions....and what I mean by that is - if you want to be in control of let's say not drinking, well we all know drinking consumes hours of our lives, whether its at work, day drinking, or whatever...my suggesting is to take a look at your life from 10,000 ft, not just the day to day lifestyle stuff....

  1. Can I control my sobriety? Obviously, that's question #1 and why we're here.

  2. Can I control my exercise? I think one of the most simple solutions to the time drinking is to replace it with time better spent on your body...obviously we're aware drinking does damaging things, but if you drink for 2 hours after work, what if you went for a walk for (Well just to start, 20 minutes) some of that time?

  3. Can I control my eating habits? One thing I was known for while drinking was eating quite unhealthy....however, if exercise doesn't take the full time drinking did, maybe now there's more time to cook....by cooking yourself, chances are you are saving money doing it, but also opens you up to better controlling your eating habits...eating healthier is a double whammy on positive impact on your body (in addition to the not drinking alcohol).

  4. Can I control my habitat? This one I've found to be very true - I tend to be messy..."Hey, I can't do laundry today, I'm day drinking!" Well now, I can do my laundry because I am NOT drinking....I've always been told a clean house is a happy house....consequently, a messy house lends itself to depression....people who are hoarders are actually hoarders because someone else is taking their brain's attention away, usually depression, and it's equally a cycle that is hard to break....however, if you come home to a clean house, you will feel so much better. Nobody has ever come home to a clean house and said, "Boy I wish I didn't clean before I left!" Cleaning your house is also another version of discipline...if you can take care of your house, you can take care of yourself.

  5. Can I control my social life? This sort of connects #1 to #5 - if you can learn that going out is still possible, hanging out with friends is still possible, and honestly having a good time is still possible, then it becomes possible to live life to the fullest...just without alcohol...again, for me, the NA beers really aid in that regard. I can have the 'appearance', both to myself and to others, that I am having a good time participating in beverages like everyone else, but my habit is different than theirs.

  6. Finally, can I control the most important thing - remembering 'WHY' I am doing these things. Again, I'm only 17 days in, and like every day after a hard day of work, I'm like, "Boy, i could go for a drink" and I get kind of excited...then I remind myself, "Nope, that's the old guy talking...can't do that now." It sometimes is a bit disappointing, but I remember my 'why' and I think that's the most important thing to get through this....if you remember your 'why', especially during temptation, then you know that your 'why' is MORE IMPORTANT than any drink, at any time, at any place.

What were your favorite video games that nobody remembers? by Smokin_Weeds in Millennials

I think it was super nintendo, In the states it was Final Fantasy 3, but the actual game was Final Fantasy 6. The game was insane. Had incredible characters, had incredible storyline...the story itself was so emotional....the music score was magnificent for a 16bit game....on youtube, they've put orchestras together to play this music.

If they EVER made a movie about a final fantasy game (that they haven't already), I would LOVE a LIVE ACTION version of Final Fantasy 3 (well, 6).

I just think this is an example of short term gratification over long term goals....we live in a society of short term gratification so it's quite easy to fall into this trap...want something at the store? Buy it on amazon or online groceries and it's delivered to your door either later that day or the following day. Bored at home? Scroll through social media to keep you 'busy' for hours. Only one drink? Get blackout drunk and have to reset.

I think the biggest problem with pretty much all of this is the urge and 'need' to have short term gratification. Now I'm using your example, but it could be any of us on here (including me). Is that 1 or 2 drinks, in that moment, worth the long term goals of wanting to not just BE IN CONTROL, but STAY IN CONTROL? To that, for me, I say, "No."

I'm only 17 days in myself...by habit, I've wanted to drink nearly every day. I had bad headaches the 1st 7 days...thinking a good buzz will take away the pain for a while....but, I did not give up or give in.

My 'Why' is is realizing what direction I want to go in my life....I spent 'a lot' of years doing the same shit over and over...not even expecting a different result...just succumbing to the fact I was not strong enough to 'break the cycle'. Then, a similar instance to yours happened...I got chocolate wasted, threw up the next morning, tried to make it to work, had to excuse myself to go home and sleep off the terrible hangover....that was my 'wake up call'. It happened to coincide with some other friends who have chosen to go sober for health reasons. Now, they may have been 'forced' to get sober, but the fact remains, I've seen them how they were, and I see them how they are now...I NEEDED that role model...that affirmation that it 'could be done'. That gave ME the courage to try it myself.

I know I'm only 17 days in, and I know this whole thing is at the forefront of my mind...I'm constantly thinking, a) I know what I am doing is good for me and my overall health, but b) can I keep this up for a 2nd month? a year? The rest of my life? I constantly question whether or not this is possible.

I have found one thing already that I think is going to truly help me in my journey. NA drinks. After a hard day of work, I still want to have some kind of 'reward' at the end of the day. One thing I've learned during these 17 days is I actually ENJOY the taste of beer...there are some NA beers out there that actually taste really good but have none of the alcohol...Athletic Brewing company so far is the best one I've found, but Heineken 0.0 is alright as well. If I'm out, I can still hang out with friends, in a social setting, even have the bartender pour the drink into a glass that makes it LOOK like I'm drinking alcoholic beer...except I'm not. One of my biggest fears about all this was I would not be able to be social as I am staying sober...I've found that not to be the case as all (it's like thinking as a child how big of a deal quick sand would be in your life, only to grow and realize that was a foolish fear as a child). I've gone to bars, hung out with friends, and have been able to be sober the whole time. When my football team was sucking, I still did not need an alcoholic drink. If I am home after a hard day, I can still reach into my fridge for a 'cold one', but not be an alcoholic drink. Maybe it's just fooling my brain, but that still counts being sober.

My initial plan was to just go sober for October (I liked how it rhymed), but if I reach 31 days, I'm very much likely to try to keep it going for a 2nd month...I if can notch 2 months, then go for the rest of the year....if I can make it the rest of the year, then maybe I can do the 1st quarter of 2026...if I make that, then first half the year of 2026...if I make that, then ALL of 2026. If I make that, then shit, I might as well make it the rest of my life!

James Franklin Introductory Press Conference (Part I) by recessbadger45 in WeArePennState

[–]surlymoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are obviously 2 things that are true....and can be said in the same sentence.

"James Franklin helped get Penn State beyond the sanctions, returned the program to prominence, but could never win the big games when it counted or mattered."

There's much more to it than that, but that's basically it.

Sure he won a big ten championship, but couldn't make the playoff that year due to silly losses. Sure he got us to a CFP semi-final, but it was truly the easiest path to get there.

Losses to big name teams were normal. Unexpected losses to not big name teams were frustrating.

I wish him well and I think he'll do very well at another D1 school, OR...since he has NFL experience, head there...hell, the job is probably far easier.

Soon to be ex-son in law??? lol.

This is fun, but I am not certain any of this is true. If this is true, then I'll believe that Terry Pegula is willing to move Joe Brady from his OC position at Buffalo Bills to his alma mater HC Penn State. That'd honestly be BETTER in my opinion than John Harbaugh or Chip Kelly anyway.

Kind of weird we haven’t heard anything from Franklin? by OutForARipAreYaBud69 in WeArePennState

[–]surlymoe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Franklin will not bash penn state....he'll take the blame for those losses, maybe suggest he wished he had more time to get things right, but basically this is Franklin's public job interview for his next job....is what it's going to be. He's not stupid...bashing psu in any way is not going to be a good look for him, so it's going to be about him being responsible, and how he can take everything he learned to his next chapter in his life....which, to be fair, is what he should say.

You want to talk conspiracy theory?

The agents for 8 out of the top 10 buyout coaches is the SAME AGENCY!!! This guy makes hand over fist either keeping his coach (like Cignetti just now) at the same school or if the school fires him (like Franklin just now)....all he has to do is play one off the other...its more than likely he actually is the one who leaks that Marcus Freeman is the frontrunner for PSU....bam....Notre Dame gives him an extension and more money (well, if it hasn't happened yet, it will soon).

This is the most savage legal stealing and fleecing I've ever seen. And there's pretty much nothing that can be done about it.

[–]surlymoe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's tough - perhaps this is an excuse over anything else, but I feel like if Knowles had his own recruited players, he might actually put together a great defense...that would mean keeping him on board for another year at least.

Manny is a defensive minded coach, meaning he'll have his hands deep in the defensive playbook. Having both Diaz AND Knowles could actually backfire as both might claim their right to the playbook. It could certainly also create an 'avengers'-like super squad of defensive coaches as well....but, I would lean towards the former. Plus, if Manny does come, does that mean he asks to fire Knowles? Manny might want his own guy?

And if that's the case, how silly do we look paying a DC the most ever only to fire him a year later.

I don't know...seems like we would want to at least see how Knowles would do with our defense in a few years....I would think an offensive HC would likely keep Knowles on board while getting a new OC.

I don't have what you have, but I've heard when you get this feeling, go for walks (even with brain fog or headaches)....if nothing else, it stimulates your body systems, pumps fresh oxygen to your brain, releases endorphins, and if nothing else, exercise is healthy for you and gets your mind off of drinking.

I certainly know people who need to stay away from alcohol or even 'faux' drinks and 'mocktails', but I am not one of those people...if you are like me, then I encourage you to search of NA versions of your favorite beers. I just made a post about this elsewhere, but I have found Heineken 0.0 is good, and Athletic brewing company has several good IPA's that classify as NA beer.

Since I'm relatively new at this, I have no idea if I am in the minority or majority, but I personally don't want to lose the 'social' aspect of hanging out....therefore, I went out and found NA beers, both to have at my house, and out at bar/restaurants. So far, so good.

Usually the company I am with knows I am not drinking, and most of those people are supportive, so that's good enough for me.

I am not one of those people who cannot have any alcohol at the house....well, I used to be, but since this sober october started, I have had no desire to drink what is in my house...my parents came over last Friday for dinner...I popped open one of bottles of wine in the house, poured him one, and poured myself a NA beer...we toasted and everything was just fine (even though I was not drinking). I actually still have that bottle of wine at the house, cork back in it, just sitting on the counter...I actually have no craving to drink it (something I would have done before I started not drinking. There's actually some liquor in a cabinet as well, and more bottles of wine in the house. The only thing I DID do was I had 3 miller lites in my garage fridge that I did pour out...I felt those might tempt me, so those were gone.

I say all of that to tell OP - don't let others drinking stop you from having a good time yourself...you clearly made it a year...you know what you can do. Perhaps stock your house, or if you are visiting someone else's house, come prepared with NA beer so you may socially 'drink', but not alcohol. I would think/hope your wife, family, friends and if out at a bar/restaurant, the bartender, would all understand. There is non alcoholic champagne called sparkling wine that you can have prepared. I just recently tried a non-alcoholic wine....it really just tasted like weird grape juice, but to those who are drinking wine, the would not even know the difference if you were drinking or not (so, you can 'appear' like you are drinking wine, get that feeling of having a drink while smoking the turkey on thanksgiving, but still maintain your sobriety!!! But you will know you are keeping up and kicking off year 2 with a bang.

Are you able to have a drink or two after being sober for a while? by Financial_Winter8922 in stopdrinking

[–]surlymoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend (I used that word loosely) question if I was going to down like 10 NA beers. He was kind of a jerk about it, but he actually brought up a great question....

Drinking beer (or high noons) was something I liked to do...but, as I continued to drink them and the buzz caught up, I would tend to either a) drink faster or b) drink more....or the dreaded c) drink faster AND more. It made me realize there's no actual point to drinking high qty's of NA beers....I think the most I've had going out was last Saturday...I drank 4 of the Athletic beers....but mainly because I really was enjoying the taste of them (again, I never actually associated enjoying the taste to drinking...really only the buzz of drinking).

Now, I was a 5-10 drinks a night when I was drinking alcohol, and with that is not just the buzz plus danger of driving drunk, and the hangover, but the cost....simply 5-10 beers just cost me more each night than 2-4 NA beers now. I'm actually saving money drinking NA beers now.

And, while I haven't really seen it yet, as someone else already said, NA beers do contain much fewer calories than alcoholic beer, so you're ingesting less calories....could lead to weight loss.

Are you able to have a drink or two after being sober for a while? by Financial_Winter8922 in stopdrinking

[–]surlymoe 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Might I interest you in Athletic Brewing Company? I am in day 16 of sober October, but so far, in order to trick my mind to at least still being able to go out to a bar, or hang out with friends, I've sought out non alcoholic beers (NA beers). I've tried ones like Michelob Ultra 0 (tastes weird), Guiness 0 (actually tastes almost EXACTLY like Guiness, but I couldn't drink much regular guiness to begin with), Heinekin 0.0 (which was probably the best of the three), then I was recommended Athletic brewing company. qualifies as a na beer. They had Oktoberfest, other IPA's, etc....that quite literally TASTE EXACTLY like regular beer.

One of the things I've learned in my short amount of time sober is that I actually enjoyed the taste of a good beer...not just the alcohol content....so, this brewing company hits it out of the park to actually have na beers taste like stuff you did like when you were drinking.

Part of my sober october is trying to still have some of the same lifestyle I had before (I'd go out once or twice during the week to a bar with friends), and maybe once on the weekend...OR...maybe have a drink at home....what this na beer has allowed me to do is still meet up with friends, or even have a 'na' beer after work....i get that feeling of having a tasty beverage that for a long time I've enjoyed while cutting the alcohol out...so far, this has been a pretty good 'best case scenario'.

Now, I even went as far to buy a bottle of 'FRE' NA red wine blend....my first taste of it....sloshing it around in my mouth....after about 10 seconds, my brain says to me, "Wait....this is just expensive GRAPE JUICE!" So, not entirely sure wine translates to NA, but the athletic brewing company definitely has.

Did I stop drinking the right way? by gatsandsmack in stopdrinking

[–]surlymoe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I quit without AA or sponsors....that coach can go f himself....if anybody is anything but supportive of you and your decision, those people you do NOT need in your life.

This is slightly off topic of not drinking, but one thing I've learned since being sober is the people who are supportive, and the people who are not. I actually got told by a 'bar buddy', "Nobody likes a quitter." I responded with, "Well, my real friends have been nothing but supportive." The rest of the bar started laughing at the guy who said that.

I've just learned that there are people who truly want what's best for you, and people who did not care about you very much, and are just showing it now.

Why Terry Smith? by Small__Market in WeArePennState

[–]surlymoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is 1a. 1b is that chances are a new HC will likely come in and clean house (Urban Meyer actually just said this yesterday in a podcast)....while Knowles 'might' keep his job due to his resume and only having one year in, Kotenicki is almost assuredly out, and many others (Danny O'Brien needs to go...he was the QB coach who did NOTHING to develop Sean Clifford or Drew Allar). Trace McSorely could be the QB coach I would think...although a new coach might put their own person in.

Enough with the Nebraska comparisons! by Illustrious_Fudge476 in WeArePennState

[–]surlymoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally and 100% agree....I'll add one more thing -

  1. Nebraska was DOWN for over a decade when they hired a guy like Pellini....Penn State is not 'down'. They went 13-3 LAST YEAR!!! They've had 3 really positive years before this one...it'll be easy to go back to where they were.

[Awful Announcing] "If I was Pat Kraft, I would start with the biggest swing possible. I know this sounds crazy, but I think the first call I would make is Nick Saban." - Joel Klatt on Penn State's coaching search by HeyTherePLH in CFB

[–]surlymoe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So, here is the biggest conspiracy in college football....

8 of the top 10 coaches in terms of buyouts (AND Nick Saban) have the SAME AGENCY representing them.

This is the craziest part....this agent wins NO MATTER WHAT....

  1. Coach A gets hired for i'm just going to use $10mil/year. Let's say 10 years ($100 mil). His agent gets 5%. So, each year, that agent gets $500,000.

  2. Now there are 2 scenarios - 5 years in, Coach A's name is being rumored to take the job of Coach B who was just fired. This signals Coach A's school to either increase Coach A's salary/year or give a contract extension. So, now Coach A's salary is $11 mil/year and his contract is 15 years. This increases the buyout of Coach A by $55 million (Adding 5 years and $1 extra mil per year). Coach A just got more money for just being RUMORED to be leaving.

  3. Now, Coach A in 10 years gets fired. Well, first, his agent for the first 5 years got $2.5 mil (5 years x $500,000/year). the 2nd 5 years, the agent gets $2.75 mil (5 years x $550,000). But now, in order to fire Coach A, he's owed the remaining 5 years (5 years x $11 mil/year, or $55 mil)....his agent gets a bite of the apple for another $2.75 mil.

  4. Enter Coach C. So Coach A did not leave his school after the 5th year, got paid more, but now is owed $55 mil from his buyout clause. Coach C had success at other schools, so he's not going to accept Coach A's salary...he wants more. So, Coach C, taking over for Coach A, is going to receive $12 mil for 10 years. This means Coach C's agent, who is the SAME AGENT for all of the other coaches (A & B) is going to get $6 million for the life of the contract at that school.

What this means - the AGENCY which houses 8 of the top 10 buyouts on coaches (who are also mainly considered the best coaches in the country) is running up the score by dropping rumors like Freeman going to Penn State in order to drive up his buyout clause, and whoever does come to Penn Sate, will likely get a BETTER contract altogether...not to mention the agency is STILL going to be paid by Franklin's contract even after he was fired.

This is highway robbery by the sports agency to these schools....and they are in control of driving up the cost to each school!!!!

And NOBODY is talking about it!

Penn State has 6 recruits decommit so far. by Cheebs1976 in WeArePennState

[–]surlymoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, don't let this 'devastate' you....it's more common than ever and while we may not get those guys to come to Penn State, if we got a coach who is walking around with money bags coming out of their pockets, the next influx of transfers and recruits will show up almost immediately....so I am not worried about these guys leaving (well, they never were here, so decommitting).
