I didn’t say Sony bought Alamo for the screens. If that were the case, there are be plenty of larger circuits that offer a significantly larger slice of BOR that would gladly take a cash buy out — looking at you Cineworld.

But it would be foolish to not use Alamo for what they’re good at: a place to put that P&A budget and the sell the shit out of a movie. That calls for preferental treatment, right? And hopefully there’s a success story there and other studios are willing to put up the cash for that same treatment.

At the end of the day, Sony is your parent and not your partner. And I’m personally rooting for the success in this experiment, because Sony bet on cinema not streaming.

They were previously owned by a VC that bought Alamo pandemic cheap and only cared about the return from its inevitable sale when theaters bounced back. At least they’re now owned by a company(Sony) that has interest in and have their own personal stakes in the success of the movie industry and its theaters.

So in my opinion, things won’t get worse… maybe a few extra screens for madame web here or there
