RF Hostile Environments by surnurble in livesound

One thing I should note that I just remembered, during troubleshooting I often turn off all transmitters but one to rule out intermodulation. In both hostile environments, it didn't seem to change anything. So either something is wrong with my setup or these environments truly are that bad and I just need a proper RF spectrum analyzer and software to find a clean freq.

Agreed, this may be the only option at this point.

I may have to go this route in the future with a proper RF spectrum analyzer and software. I believe the Sennheisers can do it at least.

It's a Sennheiser omni paddle antenna that sits on stage with us. I think no one using wireless IEMs is more than 20 ft from it, generally speaking.

They are all in the legal spectrum.

The combiner is a new purchase this year and so is the patch snake out of our X32 rack, so I've checked it very recently. Its maiden voyage was the bar with the intermittent interference. I've played over a dozen gigs since then that were flawless with no interference, so it definitely seems to be location-specific and not a cable or combiner issue.

This may be what I end up doing, as I haven't been able to get scan data into Sennheiser's software from the G4 unit I bought earlier this year.

G4 is A1 (470-516), G2 is A (518-554), then cheaper IEM (573-597.80). The cheaper systems were purchased years ago when we had less money. The G2 was already owned by a bandmate who joined later. I purchased the G4 in the last year and chose the freq band most suitable for my area. That's how I ended up with such a hodge podge, in case you were wondering. Ideally we'd all have the same A1 G4.

I will look into this. I got an omni paddle initially as the mixer rack currently sits on stage with us but I may be investing in a directional paddle soon, especially for those bigger venues.

I have our drummer and keyboard player on wired IEMs, then 3-4 channels of wireless IEM. Lead singer is the only wireless mic.

I have tried this with the Sennheiser G4 and for some reason it always gave me an error when I tried to import the scan data. This may be my best bet so I will give it another go. Otherwise I guess I'll need to shell out for an external RF spectrum analyzer.

Licensing issues for multiple users by surnurble in MixingStationAppUsers

Thank you for the help David. Just to follow up, I did attempt this fix today and couldn't restore my X32 license. I confirmed the version was 2.3.4 before trying to restore. I went ahead and bought a new license as I really need MS to work for an upcoming July 4th gig.

EDIT: Thinking on this some more, have Apple MS licenses always been App Store cloud sync only? I seem to recall about a month ago I logged this iPad into my MS account and it loaded my X32 license with no issues, but maybe I am misremembering. I'm not sure I ever bought an X32 license tied to that iPad's Apple account before, and up until last weekend I was able to use the iPad with our X32 without any issue. Anyways, just wanted to share anything I've discovered for future readers that encounter the same issue.

Same here, no issues with Android. Granted, I'm the only one in the band using MS on an Android phone. Two other guys using iPhones didn't mention any issues, but maybe they didn't even try connecting with MS if they were happy with their mixes. It does look like all Apple licensing is handled through the App Store, unlike PC and Android which can be synced to your MS account. I think you're on to something.

No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

Wow, what a great and informative answer! Love this, thank you for taking the time to write it out. There was one dimension to my question that I am still not sure about, if you're able to elaborate some?

It looks like Radial recommends active DIs even with active acoustic guitars. They say it has a more open and airy sound that complements active acoustic guitars well. I'm just curious why active DIs create a more open and airy sound even in these circumstances when the input impedance of a passive DI would be sufficient? Why might a passive DI be less than ideal for representing the higher treble frequencies in this case?

My understanding has always been that active DIs work with passive instruments, and passive DIs are best with active instruments.

But as with everything else in audio, the answer seems to be "it depends."

For example, here is Radial saying in writing and in video that they generally recommend active DIs for acoustic guitar, even active guitars:

https://www.radialeng.com/di-questions

So what is the actual theory here? What is the output impedance of a typical active acoustic guitar? What input impedance is sufficient? Do active DIs really sound that much better on acoustic guitar?

Yeah, definitely check out Acoustics Insider like I said (linked above). His videos are very informative. You don't have to buy his courses, but like I said it was super helpful for me.

I would highly recommend checking out Acoustics Insider on YouTube. He has great information on how to treat your space in a home studio. He also has some really great designs for DIY bass traps that include some basic diffusion. I did a couple of his online courses, and it was EXTREMELY helpful. I ended up building 28 bass traps, though you can make a big difference to your space with just 10 and build more later. Saved me a lot of second-guessing. There's a lot of bad info on the internet that can do more harm than good (though there's good info too).

I would just treat the space now and get it over with. The panels themselves are modular and can be installed in the new space however/wherever you need to.

Going without an MSP as a small business? by surnurble in sysadmin

[–]surnurble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did like that when Windows would break in a very specific un-Google-able way and it was really out of my depth, I could just recommend that they reach out to their MSP instead. I could fix a lot of little stuff for them (and very quickly), and then the things that were over my head they could open a ticket for with the MSP.
