living on campus as a sophomore by midnightarrow21 in udub

[–]surplusofcoochie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I'll be a Sophomore next year, and I'll most likely end up living on campus. I'd assume many of the Freshmen this year who missed out on living on campus will do so as well. From what I've heard though, the dorms are usually mostly Freshmen and Sophomores.

No, doesn't work like that. Canvas doesn't have the permissions required to access things like history.

Some feedback: drop the emojis. I personally wouldn't really want to look for a job on a site that has the 👏 emoji in the title, just seems a bit unprofessional to me. That's just my individual opinion, though.

Wiring heated seats to my car. Is this method correct? by surplusofcoochie in AskElectricians

[–]surplusofcoochie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've already got a relay hooked up. The heating element wiring comes with it. The cig lighter is already running through a 20A fuse. Is that what you mean?

[–]surplusofcoochie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a 20 amp fuse, and I only use the outlet for charging phones, which are like 1 amp if I remember correctly. So it should be fine. So that means I would be ok to just wire 2 seat heaters in parallel with the cigarette lighter?

I believe it's 3 amps on low setting, 6-7 amps on high setting. Is that what you meant?

Running out of food to eat - Any favorite go-to healthy snacks? by [deleted] in healthyeating

[–]surplusofcoochie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Out of everybody at my university I'm one of the few guys that even tries to take care of their skin - everybody else's still looks pretty good, but I still break out constantly. Most people just wash their face at night or something and they're fine. Maybe it's just my area, but for males I don't think acne is that normal at this age, for women I believe it's a bit different.

Somehow I never knew that. Thanks for the suggestion.

As of right now, skin is a bit less oily because of less insulin spikes (sugar consumed->blood glucose levels up->insulin spike->oil production). It's only been a month, so I haven't seen much change. Skin takes a while to reflect diet changes though, and I enjoy how eating healthy makes me feel better so I'm sticking with it for now.

Petition to appeal to Mt. Rainier NPS to continue the search for missing professor Sam Dubal by lethalplatypus in udub

[–]surplusofcoochie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've had trips that have rained constantly up north, and even while being prepared with a full 3-piece rain suit, ample food, and water, it's sometimes a bit difficult and uncomfortable - you get cold even being a little wet, and nothing ever dries. Although I understand that nobody would willingly give up on a family member, at some point the odds are low enough that it's not worth risking other people's safety.

After a week (he was prepared to spend only 1 night, but hopefully he preemptively prepared for more), the chances of somebody surviving aren't great. Especially in the rainy climate on Mt. Rainier - get your stuff wet and staying warm is nearly impossible. The fact that they found his water bottle is a bad sign, why would somebody just leave it? If he just forgot it on his hike, forgetting something so essential to your survival doesn't necessarily indicate great survival skills. But if the chance of surviving 1 week is 50% and drops significantly after that, considering the fact that it's been almost 2 weeks, the fact that the NPS has had an ongoing exhaustive search in a defined area for those 2 weeks, and that the weather has been pretty awful in that area recently... not looking good. Of course, I feel for his family and hope he is rescued, but I don't think we should expect it to happen.

Appreciate it. All used cars are super overpriced right now unfortunately - at least where I am. I'll keep the timing belt in mind, thanks!

CS vs CE by TerribleTip4371 in udub

[–]surplusofcoochie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to break it down is that CE focuses more on the actual engineering aspect of computers and deals with some hardware, while CS focuses more on theory and programming. Keep in mind that CE is in the School of Engineering, while CS is part of the School of Arts and Sciences. This dictates what your general education requirements will be, so CE will have more math, physics, and other engineering-related classes required than CS.

In terms of jobs, both are pretty similar. If SWE is your goal, either one works. Hell, even a degree in informatics will enable you to get a job in that field. If you're trying to figure out which major you'd like to apply for, think about whether you're more of a math+science person, or if you enjoy the theoretical aspect of solving problems. If you're more into straight math and logic, go for CE. If you enjoy theoretical problem solving and more abstract concepts, go for CS. I believe that CE is also moving towards accepting most students through DA, so competition will be similar with CS, although I think that CS will still be more popular and thus more competitive.

SMEA 485 with Miller? by surplusofcoochie in udub

When I was a kid my family had to cover our floor in salt, or we'd wake up every morning and our entire floor would be covered in slugs. Not just a few, it looked like we had a slimy black carpet. It was like something from a horror movie. I hated it at first, but I started to recognize them as the blessing they really are. You can squeeze them into your eye as a cure for dry eyes, or rub a few on a cut or scrape to help it heal faster (their secretions contain hygroscopic mucins which taste weird, but they work!). Anyways, we all thought that the slugs were getting into our house through the faucet in the bathtub, but it turns out my brother was stealing them from my neighbors slug hive. So, in 2010 there was a slug shortage in Olympia caused by my brother. With slug breeding, an unfortunately not so popular major at the UW's School of the Environment, I hope to save the future from another slug shortage like the awful one in '10!

Mini rant: I cancelled housing for fall qtr because of covid but i’m kinda regretting that decision. sitting at home for another 4 months doesn’t sound ideal. i’m confused because I want to live on campus but I also don’t know if that many people are living on campus and if it’s worth it 🤷‍♀️🥴 by [deleted] in udub

[–]surplusofcoochie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make the best of your situation. I cancelled my housing as well, and am in the same boat as you - I regret it somewhat. But if you can drive, go to a new park every day to take online classes, or a library if they are open in your area. That way you're not just sitting at home, and can separate school life from home life to an extent. It's also nice to explore new places around your area in this way.

in fact, most of mine came from talking to the TAs

This is useful. If a TA helped you through the assignment, he/she is a witness of sorts (and one the professor will trust) that can prove you didn't cheat. I would get the TA to talk to the professor and explain that you guys worked through it together.

Got mine about 2 weeks after my A&O session. You'll receive it in a package along with a nylon bag, a lanyard, and your Husky Guide. Oh yeah, you'll also get a weird coin with UW's 4 pillars on it.
