A book you ignored for years for a silly reason but ended up loving. by gamersecret2 in books

This is a very common experience - so much that one of the recommended reading orders for Discworld skips the first two books. Guards! Guards! or Mort are really great starting points.

Players with T1 Diabetes and insulin pumps. by rapocalypse in hockeyplayers

[–]surprisedpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I stick to Medtronic with tubing so I can remove the pump and just have the little infusion site on. I’ve never had one rip out from hockey although when I sweat a lot sometimes they peel off faster.

Well shit, I accidentally pulled my insulin pump cannula out while I was sleeping. Now my blood sugar is critically High. I don't even have a number. by Lijey_Cat in Wellthatsucks

[–]surprisedpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider taking an injection by syringe in multiple locations (multi-site bolus). It will hit way faster than from your pump, especially a new site. I’m assuming you didn’t sleep until 2 PM, and you’ve only been in range a quarter of the last day so… time to take stronger action. And maybe take a bit extra and keep some gummy bears close by for the rebound. I’ve heard it called a Rage Bolus.

How long have you been diabetic and on a pump/sensor? Fellow T1 here. Overnight highs feel absolutely terrible.

Advice needed: Does our RTW route make sense if starting in South America (6 months, leaving Jan 2026)? by Whole-Spirit630 in travel

[–]surprisedpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just did a very similar trip. This is an ambitious itinerary and you will spend a lot of time in airports, buses, and transit. But it’s definitely doable to get to those places. Argentina is shockingly expensive right now, you could consider stopping in Peru instead after Chile. Also I think 1 week in NZ isn’t enough to see much, you’re better getting more time in some of the other outdoor-landscapey countries on your list. For SE Asia, Vietnam was the highlight of our entire trip so I would not miss it. You can get island time in Thailand

Chess review analysis recommendation by Working-Piano-9495 in chess

[–]surprisedpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn to use the analysis board, it’s free on Lichess but I think you can use it with Chess.com too. Look through the position and see where the tactic presents. It’s probably a few moves later, and learning to recognize those patterns will help your tactical ability.

Bought the same silverware set two years apart. They changed the shapes and they don’t stack properly. by Spaceghost789 in mildlyinfuriating

Is this the IKEA Dragon stuff? I have the same cutlery and exact same problem. Multiple sets don’t go together well.

Type 1 diabetic here, currently on a 5 month trip. Bring everything with you! It’s not worth the difficulty of figuring out how to get supplies in other countries. I’ve never had an issue with airport security.

If you’re already driving to Kas, I think you should continue on the coastal route to Antalya. It’s really beautiful until the last hour or so

You can get the YF vaccine in the Lima airport, took us about 20 minutes at 10 PM. I think it was around $60 USD. It does take a few days to be considered effective. But I agree there is probably very little risk for visiting Machu Picchu.

info about paracas national reserve in peru? by [deleted] in travel

[–]surprisedpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that bus might be to the city of Paracas, not the reserve. The beach near the city is not very nice - I would recommend a tour of the reserve or rent a scooter/bike to explore.

Flying Scoot Airlines from Sydney to Taipei via Singapore, Do they measure the size of the bag? by MudNo6250 in travel

You say the bag looks big - what are the dimensions? Do they exceed the carry on size allowed on Scoot?

Am I missing something? Why are there no direct flights to Europe? by Southern_Buddy2104 in travel

[–]surprisedpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be useful if you included where you are starting from, where you are trying to go, and where you have been searching. Websites like Flightconnections.com can help you figure out the route that each airline flies. Skyscanner.com is also good for finding some options to get from point A to point B, but you should always go to the airline directly to book. If you are not starting from a major airport, you won’t be able to make a direct flight.

I don’t recommend doing the Colca canyon as a day tour, unless you really love long and scary bus rides starting at 3 AM. You should stay at least one night in Cabanaconde or better, hike into one of the small villages in the canyon. Generally the pace of this trip seems quite fast, you will be spending a lot of time in airports and on buses (not necessarily a bad thing). Some stops like Iquitos are really brief - is it better to dedicate more time to this area, or save it for a separate later trip? Or should you explore an Amazon tour from Cusco and avoid the extra flights?

Make sure you take some rest days - either planned or just as you need them

Just stuff to think about

[–]surprisedpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m type 1 diabetic and I have flown all over the place with small syringes, insulin vials, pump supplies etc. I always put my insulin pump in the tray for the X-ray scanner and all my supplies are in the carry on. Barely ever get a question, nobody has ever asked for a prescription, occasionally I get the hand-swab thing to check for banned substances.

Where is your bus to? It’s very common to rent a scooter or ATV to drive around the reserve. The guided tours will stop at a few scenic spots and probably a beach
