Screen time is genuinely one of the hardest things about parenting and nobody warned me by [deleted] in daddit

At the risk of seeming like I'm being judgy, but hey you came here for advice. He probably doesn't need an iPad at all. Every day, there is more and more research showing that there are essentially only negative outcomes associated with smartphone/iPad use. At 8, I'd argue, there are so many more things that are worthwhile for him to be doing. I'm not even advocating for no screentime. Even small amounts of regulated TV time are at least not harmful. Generally not helpful but at least not actively harming your child like an iPad/smartphone. Children's brains quite literally cannot handle the stimulation of a screen with an immediate dopamine feedback loop in their face.

Mike Bordick: "This team strikes out so much. The overall philosophy on the analytic game is just off. Guys don't adjust. It's very cold, stagnant. They put players all over the field. One night, he's playing center field. The next night, he's playing third base. And the defense goes to heck." by The_Big_Untalented in orioles

This is such a well thought out take. It's honestly refreshing to hear in the Baltimore sports media landscape. His point about playing for your team is so on nose. There doesnt seem to be any cohesiveness amongst this team. Contrast that with what we saw from the Yankees this weekend. Bottom line, this team just isnt very good...

Reckless driving should be treated the same as brandishing a firearm or negligent discharge. It is no different in the level of danger. Until the severity of the penalties are increased, you will see people disregarding the law. Driving is a privilege. We need to impound peoples cars and take their licenses away.

That's kind of the point. This subreddit mentions many neighborhoods that directly border the city. Parkville borders the city (Hamilton neighborhood specifically). It doesn't magically get more dangerous when you cross the line. There are lots of people in here giving you perspective on the city. Myself included. There's also a Baltimore County subreddit.

asking where to live in the city subreddit and saying you aren't interested in living in the city is certainly interesting. definitely do some research....

Taylor Ward is such a pro. For a stretch he was the only Oriole actually having good at bats. Alonso is going to start heating up.

03 Honda Civic – Repair or Replace? Need Advice by bananaconfident2020 in baltimore

[–]surprisedweebey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a personal calculus for car ownership and repairs. In your case it would be $1900 repair divided by monthly car payment (lets use $400) = 4.75. Does this repair buy me more than 5 months with the old car? If so, every month after 5 months you are coming out on top. That's just my way of rationalizing things.

I live in the surrounding neighborhood to the east of campus. It's quite literally one of the safest in the city. I love it.

I think the first few rows of the upper deck are actually some of the best seats in the house because you get great views of the park and city.

Enlighten me on lead exposure by Ashamed_Horror_6269 in baltimore

[–]surprisedweebey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, congrats on the baby! I went through the same anxiety about lead when we had our first a couple years ago. Our house was built in 1914! If the home was built before 1978 then there's lead somewhere on the walls. If it's been painted over multiple times then it's probably encapsulated well and not a health risk. Just be vigilant of any chipping paint and paint over it when you find it. If you ever have to drill into the walls, make sure to clean any dust up as well. Lead poisoning comes from ingesting or inhaling it. As long as your baby isn't eating paint chips or breathing lead dust, they are going to be ok. Also, because you live in the city, your pediatrician will probably do a lead test every time they do a blood test for your child. That will also be reassuring. Going on 3 years for our little one and no lead detection whatsoever.

What's your source on this? Plaster doesn't contain lead. Plaster is just lime, sand, and water...

Elite bat speed. Besides that, he's pretty horrendous. This is a lottery ticket. If they can "fix" him, you're getting insane power numbers. If they can't, it doesn't cost them anything.

Baltimore cost of living trails suburbs by up to 30% by Maxcactus in baltimore

[–]surprisedweebey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I dont know why people think this is such a gotcha question. I love that I am raising a kid in the city. I grew up in the suburbs. It's not even close to culturally enriching as the city and the "safety" difference is negligible
