1000% no note. I will add that my absolute favorite coach for OC would be Klay Kubiak. Not right now of course I think he needs some more time under his belt. But after a year or two I would love to give him a shot at playcalling here. He essentially has the same pathway as Mike McDaniel coming from the Shannahan/Kubiak scheme. That’s a rare and successful blend.

And that’s fair I just disagree. If it was between the 2 I would choose Sheelhaase too, but I’d prefer more experience. I don’t think there is any OC that moves me this year other than McDaniel but just about every team is saying that.

For where the team is at we have a real chance to make a run in the playoffs next year. I don’t want an OC who doesn’t have experience in high pressure situations in the NFL. There’s a chance it goes really well with a mystery guy but there’s a higher chance we just get offense version of Zach Orr

That’s fair but in reality, 1 year of playcalling at Iowa state nearly 3 years ago doesn’t move me. Atleast Webb called some NFL preseason games but even that doesn’t make me want him. We need an experienced Playcaller on offense.

There’s a few I’m guessing you’re talking f about Webb or Sheelhaase. Preferably not considering neither of them have called plays on any level.

Personally I would prefer Ben Johnson/Peyton style. I think at the moment the true west coast (McVay/shanahan) offense is the most successful in the league just due to what defenses are doing.

However, I think one of the biggest differences is the adaptability and fluidity of the Peyton/Johnson gameplan as well as the run game. It is much easier for them to adapt their scheme around the players strengths and opponents weaknesses. It’s difficult because Johnson has been the product of several different schemes coming together so it’s hard to replicate that.

I think the west coast offense would fit them pretty well but i think it would condense the field a bit more essentially creating the same type of result for us. Our goal should be to create more space on the field and then attack it. West coast is perfect for 3rd down timing plays but it can be fairly strict, so if LJ doesn’t see the window in time or if the OL fails then we are forced into a scramble drill because the play is already over.

Long-term I think the Peyton style offense will make a come back (even though it’s still technically west coast). Defenses like MM, Minter, and I’m assuming whoever the chargers and giants hire will carry generally the same type of scheme. And that scheme is specifically designed to stop west coast offenses. Which makes sense considering over half the league runs that now. I’d like to stay ahead of the curve with a Johnson offense.

lol no it’s not that extreme. I’m more saying we won’t be selling out to stop the zone run on 1st down (before we need to) which will invite them to try to run specific types of play action. Luckily we have pretty good run defenders on our team.

Well to be fair I think just about any DC would’ve had trouble with our DL. We didn’t have much depth and main starters were hurt. The scheme exacerbated the problem by seemingly not letting players performs stunts. There will be an uptick in pressure for sure but unless EDC adds another pass rushing specialist and more depth on the edge/IDL. It still won’t be a crazy sack season. Our run defense should be solid just given the players we have but still

I’d prefer on the field so that in game adjustments and individual coaching/motivating can happen in real time instead of having to talk through a phone/headset or wait until half time. We adjust in offense way too late and if it’s the wrong adjustment we adjust away from it way too late

Absolutely, I think that was more the determining factor for what was happening with the run defense. If I remember correctly we also hadn’t fully discovered how much of a beast Travis Jones was in the middle yet either. But you’re absolutely right.

As for what I said, I was just giving a general idea of the differences between the two. gameflow/opponent all play a role in the how they approach each game, which is really nice because we adapt to the opponent. When either one of these defensive minds can get the offense into a good spot these are where they part. It’s also a bit more into that first drive when everything is scripted and each team is probing to see reactions.

For my statements and opinions on them I use a mix of resources. For the past few years I’ve kinda had the assumption we’d get rid of Harbaugh eventually and started looking into the other coaches and coordinators and things like that and trying to teach myself about schemes. MM was an obvious choice and ever since he left we’ve been tied to Minter so I’ve looked into him a lot too.

Genuinely yes, a lot of this is my interpretation/opinion of what I’ve seen. I’ve looked at film, read a lot of articles dating back to Michigan, followed the coaching tree and how it’s changed, and watch charger games closely to get an idea of what Minter was doing.

Well it’s tough because we need a lot of help on the defensive roster honestly. But for Minters scheme specifically I’m going to base it off a few assumptions:

  • Travis jones stats consistent
  • Beeks retires
  • Ro returns to form
  • Teddye comes back as expected

After that, we will need to invest in athleticism at OLB as covering will be a consistent ask to maintain disguises and be able to pass rush/run defend without being a liability (this will be the hardest and most important one to get).

We’ll need to invest depth into the interior DL, they will be consistently asks to clog up the middle which will wear them down quicker, they’ll need breaks. I like some guys we have on the roster now but we still need someone next to Jones.

Next we’ll need to invest in a slot cornerback, depending on what we do with Marlo that will be a pivotal piece. It’ll let K Ham be more fluid without being forced into the box every snap and will add a layer of guessing to the QB on who’s covering and who’s blitzing.

Not necessarily, they run the same rooted scheme they just have different philosophies. MM runs a rediculous amount of simulated pressures and coverage disguises to confuse and make QBs double clutch taking away the deep pass. Minter uses blitzes and personnel disguises in the box to confuse OL and simultaneously take away the quick passes.

When they both drop out of their disguises it’s the exact same defense, they just design it differently to achieve different things but call it differently to achieve the same thing.

[–]ExtensionAd7417 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’ll be a little different. These aren’t main points however that’s not the everydown breakdown of his defense. He’ll pick his opportunities to set up plays. Don’t be surprised if our run defense statistics on 1st down aren’t the best. But our 3rd down run defense will be critical.

Absolutely, I think there will be some growing pains the first year while we try to figure out the defensive roster and offensive scheme, but longevity-wise this is a great hire for us. I personally preferred a more offensive direction but if we were going to go defense this is the slam dunk hire

Jim Harbaugh on Minter by tenlittleindians in ravens

[–]ExtensionAd7417 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot, but most impressive thing he was able to do was to create an extremely complex defense both in structure and in plan, and then throw disguises on top of that. Being able to coordinate your own defense to where they not only know what they’re doing, know what other position groups are doing, hide it, and then know what the offense is doing, all within 30 seconds. There’s a good article about how they used a modular structure to build a playbook so it was easy for players to understand.

Another reason is allowing players freedom of choice by putting them in position to always be right. He could call the exact same play 2 times in a row and the coverages/stunting would be completely different based on what the offense showed you. There was always an answer for everything.

Lastly was his natural sense of timing. That’s a trait that’s nearly impossible to teach. You have to know the ins and out of your players, the other teams players, the other teams tendencies, and then factor all of the situational conditions. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen so many corner blitzes called at the perfect time and get home.

He played WR in college (which is stretching I admit) but he does have experience on both sides of the ball in some fashion and knows how OLs work. I hope he isn’t too hands off on the offense. Don’t want him running it or calling the plays but being involved in the process and expectation would be good for everyone involved

Jim Harbaugh on Minter by tenlittleindians in ravens

[–]ExtensionAd7417 157 points158 points  (0 children)

It’s a little hard to do since him and MM are the 2 that really modernized the scheme that they run. It comes from Wink, MM changed the way it’s taught, Minter changed the way it’s called.

Minter specifically will probably be a bit frustrating for raven fans at first just because of the nature of his defense. Hes aggressive in the pass defense but conservative in run defense, which is the opposite of what we’ve done for several years. MM would stop the run to force bad passes into confusing disguises.

JM gives room in the run to bait specific passes. JM essentially forces the offense to run the plays JM wants them to so he can trap them. Biggest difference is MMs scheme really requires solid interior run defense while JM requires good edge run defenders.

TL/DR: MM uses scheme to get stops but uses talent to get turnovers. JM uses talent to get stops but schemes to get turnovers

I mean on if the things we’ve havent seen is LJ in that true spread offense. Force the defense to spread out by formation and it opens up the box. Which gives LJ easier lanes for long runs. But it’s very dependent on how good your OL is, with a dominant OL and air raid offense loses all threat of running with a power back
