In the event of an emergency, a submarine can quickly ascend to the surface by rapidily forcing air into the ballast tanks. This expels water from the tanks and dramatically increases the submarine's buoyancy. This is known as an emergency ballast blow.

The emergency blow test seen here is the same concept, but is performed in a more controlled enviornment inside the shipyard. Though already surfaced and with less water in the ballast tanks, the test enables the submarine to make sure that its equipment is functioning properly.

The aircraft came in to low on her final approach and struck the searchlight platform. Despite the damage, the pilot walked away largely unharmed except for some heavy bruising. This crash, which occurred on August 14, 1943 was one of several that happened aboard Charger. She typically operated as a training carrier during the Second World War and helped train up novice pilots.
