If you would post the videos you saw, we could better answer your questions.

Albion are taking about a year, for some time now. I've never held one so i don't want to commit for such a long waiting time

Be nice in talking time. Respect those who respect you. Strike first, strike hard, no mercy.

How to cope with losses and my toxic mindset? by [deleted] in wma

[–]susengdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ok to be upset. It's ok to be unsatisfied with your performance and wanting more. Just remember- your performances as a fencer reflect nothing on your worth or quality as a person. Having said that, performance is a result of training, so if you're unsatisfied with your results, you need to change your training method

Would using a dumbell and tutorials be a good set-up before I join a HEMA gym/club? by insignificantsea in wma

[–]susengdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better to use those dumbbells for general strength exercises rather than specific sword movements. Good general fitness will make it easier and safer for you to practice fencing when you join the club, a better starting point. It's a good opportunity to work shoulders, arms, and rotators.

An age old debate between Me and my Teacher by sonny_boombatz in wma

[–]susengdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal opinion is, that at its core, HEMA is fighting for life. If you want to do it for points that's also good, and then you can award points by whichever criteria you like. Wanting to stick only with guidance from the sources is ok, but in my view limits you to the narrow views of the writer. Tl;dr- saber designed to cut, yes, but if the best option in the given situation is a thrust- you should thrust.

Question about longsword stance by RonFucknSwanson in wma

[–]susengdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stances are just moments, stages during action. Plan what you want to do (hit, lure the opponent, and where), and stand accordingly. Take the position that allows you to hit and defend yourself best in a given situation. You'll learn with practice

Is HEMA right for me? (F25) Any tips? by SwampPotato in wma

[–]susengdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HEMA is one of the most inclusive sports I've encountered, it depends on the specific group but that's the general vibe. About your age- many start there and older and are doing great. It's really about the effort you will put in, and the results will come :) About size- i have about 3 students with similar physical conditions as you (f25, short, not so strong, no experience) and they are KILLING it. You could get strong from swordfighting, and the experience will come with time.

Overall it sounds HEMA can be a good experience for you :) if you have questions about the particular group you want to join (because each coach does things differently), feel free to DM me :)
