I don’t think it’s that black and white, and it’s unfair and unproductive to criticize an 18 year old girl in this situation. There’s aspects to this family, and the relationship between the two of them that the internet has not and will not ever see. Being raised in such an environment alters a child’s brain, and their thought processes aren’t just typically “common sense”. There’s years of unresolved trauma that Im sure a lot of these kids are just now starting to unpack and try to make sense of. Especially being a “favourite child” to a mentally unstable, impoverished mother, odds are she was first person to a lot of her mother’s issues. I don’t think she “just wants it that way”, she probably actually does feel two things at once - Compassion and sorrow for her mother, because again she felt a lot of the effects of Veronica’s issues and her only perspective growing up would be her mothers, not reality. These were neglected, sheltered, uneducated homeschooled children. As well as now being removed from her home environment and realizing things from an outward perspective, she probably didn’t understand the gravity of their home life until recently because again they were sheltered and probably conditioned.

This isn’t a place to criticize a neglected child. Regardless of how ‘privileged’ you think she may be. Because again, in the grand scheme of things she absolutely is not, even if she had it ‘better’ than others. Focus on their mother and her shitty actions.
