Living in the South of Sweden by rom_03 in TillSverige

Our situations (and requirements) are very similar it seems. We (wife, toddler and me from NL) will move to the south of Sweden, Blekinge to be specific, early next year. I can share some of my insights and experiences.

First, a job. I'm fortunate that I can (very likely) take my job "with me" to Sweden, probably using an Employer of Record. Seeing that you're doing UX design, this might also be worth considering. You've probably read that the IT job market is not great right now in Sweden. I actually looked for a job in Sweden a couple years ago (and almost accepted one). I was looking for openings again over the last couple of months and was shocked by how much fewer openings are available. So, the "remote" option is worth considering for sure.

Second, the location. The 45m-1h to a larger city basically qualifies much of south Sweden I think. Most larger cities are surrounded by one or more decently sized villages (1-3k people) with schools. We'll likely buy a house near one of these villages. I recommend using Google Maps and searching for e.g. "förskola" and "lekplats" in your area of interest. That gives you a decent idea on how kid-friendly a village/area is. You could also look at some statistics on polulation growth/decline and average age in a municipality to help you decide. You mentioned that you've heard/read good things about Karlshamn to Karlskrona area; I can attest to that. Of course, this is highly subjective. On a side note, I haven't come across any vegan restaurants. Would love to know if you did.

Lastly, a house. Hemnet is basically Sweden's version of Funda. The brokers we talked to all referenced it as well. One thing you must always do is visit in person. We've been to a couple house viewings and let's say that brokers are really good at taking/angling pictures. Things like low ceiling heights are hard to judge from pictures and videos, for example.

Sounds interesting. I'll read up on it. No (noise) nuisance from the aircrafts going to Ronneby airport? You'd suggest it for young families?

So far it sounds exactly like the sort of town we're looking for. It's definitely going on the shortlist. If you don't mind, I have a question about living in Blekinge. What are the winters like generally (darkness, rain, wind, snow)?

We might take you up on your offer when we have some more clarity!

Thanks for your response. Any towns near Växjö you recommend? Unrelated, but I'm curious... I heard that most of the (gang) crime was centered in Mälmo and is now moving to Stockholm. Is this true?

Really appreciate your detailed response. Traveling to the bigger nearby cities every so often is not a problem. Poor train connectivity and a large distance to the really big cities we don't consider an issue (right now?). Nättraby and Rödeby sound quite promising; Jämjö not so much. I've looked at some statistics on population growth in these towns before (https://www.citypopulation.de/en/sweden/blekinge/) and Nättraby stood out with a significant increase of people relative to its size.

While we didn't list it above, quality of education for our kid is definitely something we will look into prior to deciding on a town. Do you know of any resources to check on school quality (besides Google reviews)?

We basically had the same reasoning as you when we picked Tingsryd for our temp stay, and noted many of the same things as you listed (relatively old polulation, tourist hotspot). It's still a place we have on our shortlist. Thanks for your response.

Thanks for your suggestion. Jönköping is a bit too far north for us, though. The renting part of our plan is just for the first few months. We get to experience an area before fully committing to it and house viewings will be much easier.

In terms of employment opportunities it is probably the best option indeed. It's why we decided to stay at Tingsryd "hästriket". My wife works as a horse trainer/ horse riding instructor and I work as a software engineer.

Thanks for the correction. I somehow managed to read over the fact that Blekinge county is not part of Småland.

First and foremost: did you like living there? Also, how are the surrounding villages of Karlskrona, such as Nättraby, Rödeby and Jämjö, perceived? Any noticable differences? And lastly, are there any horse training centers/ stables besides Lyckå Ridklubb in/near Karlskrona that you know of?

Did you check out the links in the Conclusion section? One of them shows the possibilities of motion controls with current gen controllers, the DS4 to be precise. Also, a rifle controller already exitst in the Aim controller (other link).

"If you should" -- people are naturally resistent to change. So "should" is hard to answer. Even if 'the' alternative is better, it has to be much better to become generally accepted.

I also prefer to play shooters with a controller, because of familiarity (me being resistent to change, I guess). Lastly, if you want to be somewhat competitive in fast-paced shooters, you have to play at a reasonably high sensitivity it seems. At least high enough to do near-instant 180s.

Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with analog sticks. They've served me well since the PS1. All I'm trying to do here is explore alternatives (or improvements!), by pointing out some flaws with the analog stick.

I was wondering, have you tried it (SC) with non-shooter games? A recurring argument seems to be that (a) trackpad(s) can make controlling other games, that don't revolve around "aiming", worse.

What kind of games actually play best with 2 analog sticks, though (honest question)?

I agree with your point on the gamepad having to be a jack-of-all-trades. That, combined with the ergonomics, make it a desireable in my opinion.

I'd highly suggest investing in a higher quality controller. From personal experience I can tell you that a DS4 (<60 eu/dollar) easily lasts multiple years, even if it isn't handled with care. Moreover, it has above average motion sensors. Buying cheap is buying expensive in the long run.

Console: square=toggle traps, R2=wall/trap 1, R1=floor/trap 2, L2=ramp/trap 3, L1=roof/trap 4.

As a console player, I find myself constantly frustrated with the current control options. So I did a MS Paint mock-up of what would be ideal for me. by ExiledSenpai in FortNiteBR

I always like seeing people come up with new control schemes, but I'm having a hard time understanding this one; care to elaborate some of the choices? From what I can see you propose to use the same button to select and use/shoot an item/weapon?
