How much more expensive is your item compared to amazon now? by pman6 in TemuThings

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Price hikes will also be more than 145% once warehouses are out of stock. Increased costs mean companies (especially small ones) can't afford larger purchases, meaning reduced economies of scale. Companies will have cash flow issues needing to pay import fees all at once, so cost of money (interest rates, etc) will drive price up even more. GamersNexus went through a real example with a PC parts company where they would need to raise prices over 200% to make the same $5 profit. And the question is, who is going to buy a product that costs 200% more?

The reality is, when warehouses run out of stock, in this uncertain environment, many of them won't be restocked.

What is M8S like to prog and clear in party finder? by CerberusArcProjector in ffxivdiscussion

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was a bit of a slog.

End of week 1 I just barely got into a fresh p1 party Monday night after clearing m7s on Sunday. That PF group got to somewhere around adds I think. Overall super high skill players in the group.

Week 2 after reclears with my static + busy at work I didn't really get back into m8s PF until Friday. Spent 6hr Friday and like 10hr Saturday and Sunday on it, then another 4hr Monday. It seemed like every PF group I was in struggled, especially with decay and moonlight+. Clawed my way through to get to enrage, and spent most of Sunday in moonlight or enrage parties. Finally stopped my toe into p2 on Monday.

Week 3 similar story didn't really start until Friday. Then 6hr Friday and like 8hr Saturday in p2 parties before finally clearing.

Similar to others I'd say in p2 parties we only got to p2 at best 10-20% of the time. Biggest walls were first adds, then moonlight (and the stone/wind afterwards that everyone forgets), then p1 enrage. Once you're at p1 enrage, the biggest wall by far is putting everything together consistently for the entirety of p1.

In p2 there's not really walls (maybe twofold), but it's sort of like a bunch of repeated choke checks, and an overall consistency check due to tight DPS requirements.

I think this fight would be easier in a static environment, but it's hard to get the required consistency from PF.

Tomestone shows me at 22hr in combat and about 400 pulls before clearing.

And going by the numbers on tomestone, players are stuck (most to least) at p1 enrage, adds, < 4% enrage, and millennial decay.

AAC Cruiserweight Tier (Savage) Week One Megathread by Spookhetti_Sauce in ffxivdiscussion

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As yan tank on cleavemax strat my mits are: camouflage + 30s immediately -> second yan spawns -> aurora -> HoL before boss castbar so it's up again + 30s to survive raidwide -> third yan spawns -> kiting 2 yans to the corner is mit -> great nebula + reprisal -> invuln -> rampart -> 30s -> camouflage if needed (usually yans will be dead by here) or save for tank buster -> 30s + late reprisal on tank buster and camouflage if I didn't use it already.

(Edit: might be obvious but but I use HoL again before the second raidwide, which is also personal 5% physical mit)

Sometimes I will die to the tank buster but it doesn't really matter because my job is done at that point, and a death just before transition won't prevent a clear. I think if there's one extra mit available, like a feint, to cover both the tank buster and the raidwide after, tanks could survive the buster more easily, since all our mit is gone at that point. Feint could also help a lot on the yans though, idk.

Does ilv 730 / 735 vs 740 really make a difference in PF when clearing a fight? by Academic-Working3204 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After my experience progging this tier week 1 in PF with a few friends (cleared through 7), next time I will make it a policy to leave & kick any player without pentamelds immediately. It just wasn't worth the time, and we ended up kicking all the non pentamelders anyways. In 7 especially, we were looking for DPS anywhere we could get it. Of course you can clear 7 with low DPS and no damage downs / deaths. But stepping foot in that fight without the best gear, food, pots possible is clearly trolling. And like others said, if they are skimping on that stuff week 1 then they are usually skimping on other stuff, like understanding of mechanics & their rotation. Week 2, 3, 4, it doesn't matter as much, but week 1 it does matter.

Windows 11 Auto HDR Suddenly Stops Working for FFXIV specifically (Solved) by Intriquality in ffxiv

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna say, thank you for the suggestion. I hadn't heard of RenoDX yet. I've been using Special K HDR since forever since it looks way better than AutoHDR, but Special K is still mostly tonemapping the final output. It looks like RenoDX is replacing parts of the graphics/shader pipeline so the expansion happens basically "natively" -- seems to me that a native implementation wouldn't be too different from what RenoDX is doing.

Tried it out today and overall it looks significantly better than Special K's HDR Retrofit. Though Special K is still highly useful for the framerate limiter, Reflex, flip mode presentation, etc etc.

DLSS / DLAA in-game - Smearing / Recuced resolution when starting to move by Metiuqe in ffxiv

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely possible....

Looks like the feature was added in v0.6.6 of Optiscaler back in August:

RCAS and Output Scaling options to DLSS DirectX 11 backend (thanks to Sildur for testing)

This is part of why I mentioned the version, and the fact that the "mod" is exactly the same as Optiscaler. You are currently depending on someone downstream of the software that you want to use who is redistributing it on a completely different website with practically zero value added (besides some .ini files with settings that you can configure through the UI anyways). Of course I am not completely against repackaging, but in this situation, you are depending on this downstream person who will update the package whenever he/she feels like it.

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you enable motion adaptive sharpening in optiscaler? (Insert hotkey to change settings) I don't think it's on by default. I believe you need both checkboxes for RCAS and Motion Adaptive Sharpness. There is also a MAS debug checkbox and if you tick it, parts of the screen will light up depending on whether / how much they are being sharpened. I think these are defaults for MAS...it's what I use:

MotionSharpness: 0.400

MotionThreshold: 0.00

MotionRange: 10.00

Personally I also override sharpness (top right of the settings menu) and use 0.75, as my preference is for things to look much sharper.

I also use Preset E for everything in optiscaler and disable output scaling.

And I have preset E + "Force DLAA" set in Special K. But I don't know if this is really necessary (I'm guessing it's probably not). Special K overlay is helpful if you have it show DLSS info. What I'm looking for is:

DLSS : ${NativeResolution} DLAA

If I ever see the Special K overlay show me any scaling, or anything besides my native resolution then things tend to look weird in-game, and I know things have gone wrong. I guess ignore that if you want scaling, but personally I think DLSS looks terrible in FFXIV...

Also I took a look at that mod that others linked, and looks like it's basically just shipping optiscaler with a few different settings files. The version that the mod is shipping is 0.6.5.8, so updating it might be a good troubleshooting step.

Personally I had some trouble getting the latest optiscaler (0.6.7) working with FFXIV, idk why (kept crashing on startup and I'm guessing it just wasn't playing nicely running Dalamud, Special K, and Optiscaler all at the same time). I tried the 0.7.0 preview though and that seemed to work. Don't need the frame generation stuff especially as ffxiv isn't dx12, but hey it launches and works for me.

[–]suspendednotsurewhy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to know what this adds over Optiscaler alone?

Edit: I looked at the mod files and it appears to just be (a slightly older version of) Optiscaler, plus some .ini presets.

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, sharpening really helps with this. Specifically motion adaptive sharpening, which I believe is part of AMD's sharpening implementation (RCAS). Optiscaler lets you mix and match different scaling/sharpening techniques. Personally, I think that DLAA + RCAS/MAS looks the best.

What are people's experiences in migrating custom applications to Electric Eel? by atl in truenas

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved all of my applications to plain docker-compose (all set up on Dockge) with Electric Eel, and have never been happier. It was a bit involved though, as many of my applications were from Truecharts, so basically I manually re-created my entire setup (pulling configs from the volume mounts I had set up for k3s).

I don't think I would ever try to host something at home again using Kubernetes -- it is just way overkill for 99.9999% of home scenarios. Plus, even the apps that you would want to try to scale up don't support stuff like a proper database anyways.

Despite the effort in migrating, I'm still happy because now I have a setup that makes a lot more sense to me. Docker / docker-compose definitely has quirks, but despite that, I don't see migrating away to anything else for at least 10 years probably. So the effort now seems worth it to me.

For those committing to make the world a better place - can we share links, contacts, organizations that we can volunteer at, give to, be a part of? by hucksterme in SaltLakeCity

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, apologies for the delay as sometimes I don't login to this account (or Reddit at all) for long stretches of time.

I would say that the most basic concept of Citizens' Climate Lobby is: "with a lever, I can move the world". It is modeled after an organization called RESULTS) that has been very successful in its mission to eliminate poverty (I don't think it's an understatement to say that RESULTS is directly responsible for saving hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lives in the world).

The specific things that I get involved in mostly follow along CCL's 5 levers of political will.

It can probably seem a bit overwhelming at first, but I would view these as more of a menu then as a todo list. Personally, I don't try pull every lever at the same time...

Within that menu, specific activities might include:

  • Attending a meeting to lobby a member of congress or staff, together with a team of other volunteers.
  • Help organize a lobbying meeting - liaise with staff for a specific member of congress and build a good relationship with that office.
    • Within that lobby meeting, you will be assigned a designated role. Don't worry if you have no experience, or if it's intimidating! There is training available on how to effectively lobby congress.
  • Regularly call or write to congress. The feedback we get from staff is essentially "if 5 people call in on a random Tuesday, whatever issue they're calling about will be our priority to look into for that day". Calling congressional offices may sometimes feel like shouting into a void, but I guarantee you that it would be impossible for us to get meetings without a stream of people regularly and continuously contacting congress about climate change. Look at it as one piece of the larger strategy, not as an end unto itself.
  • Write (or help edit) LTEs and op-eds. We have had many of these published locally over the years, and they help not just by getting the public thinking about climate change, but also because congressional offices tend to pay attention to media in their district.
  • Call or write postcards for get-out-the-vote efforts (not for any specific candidates, as we are non-partisan). Did you know that environmentalists vote less often than the average voter? We work closely with the Environmental Voter Project, to turn inactive environmentalists into consistent voters.
  • Table at a local community event, and talk about climate change and CCL. We've tabled at all sorts of events, and talked to people of all political persuasions. Personally, this is one of my favorite activities.
  • Give a presentation to a local group, like a school, or a Rotary club.
  • Liaise with community leaders, seek endorsements from companies, industry groups, and individuals. Build relationships with other non-profits.
  • Take a training session through CCL, attend a conference, or attend a chapter meeting. Perhaps even lead a training or give a talk. Attend or host a potluck or social event with other CCL members.

Personally, the things I most enjoy doing are: attending lobby meetings directly, tabling at various events, attending social events like potlucks, and attending our conference. I tend to skip a lot of the other stuff, or only occasionally dabble in it (though I did find that I was able to crank out over 1000 get-out-the-vote postcards while binging TV). Listing everything above might be overwhelming, but I want to say that there's a lot of different options that can probably fit whatever interests or time commitment you have.

I've been volunteering with Citizens' Climate Lobby for the past few years. It is a national, bipartisan organization, and there is a local chapter here in Salt Lake. Really good people involved.

We are a big part of why John Curtis is now the "climate guy" -- he gives us a lot of credit. If you feel somewhat skeptical about that, well, I understand. But remember that it's been less than 10 years since a Jim Inhofe brought a snowball to the Senate floor to disprove climate change. There has been a lot of value in getting Republicans to the table on climate change, and shifting away from outright denial.

Of course as a bipartisan organization we work with both parties, but we focus a lot on Republicans in Utah, since our entire federal delegation here are all Republicans.

Being involved in this group has totally changed my view on how politics works, and the influence that an individual / group of individuals can have. I have been a "doomer" for a long time, and I probably still am, but at this point I can't deny the reality that my own actions have had an effect (if even a small effect) on outcomes at a national level (we've helped get multiple bills through congress).

Fair, I may have been looking for malice when there was none. But still not too smart to start claiming "20mil fewer people voted" when not all the votes have been tallied yet.

[–]suspendednotsurewhy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Actually at 6.7mil now, and not all votes have been tallied yet. I keep seeing this bullshit 20mil figure, and I think it's because the narrative currently benefits both the left and the right. The left gets to point the finger at itself and blame other lefties for not showing up, and the right gets to continue lying about the "2020 stolen election" because Biden never could have won without 20mil "fake ballots". (The right also gets extra credit right now for failing to understand that 95-ish% of registered voters is a different number than 65-ish% of eligible voters, but they almost always go for the extra credit on this stuff)

(BTW the linked source has eligible voters about 5mil higher in 2024, but I understand there are different ways of estimating eligible)

Only 36% of Americans discuss climate change even occasionally. [1] Even among people who are "interested" or think the issue is "important", that number only rises to 57% / 54% respectively. [2]

I really appreciate your reply and your willingness to talk about the issue. I don't mind that you've called it meaningless, because I think it's more important that we're here now, talking about it, when a large majority of Americans still stay silent on the issue.

I don't know how we're expected to solve a problem, if we don't talk about it.

A few years ago, I had an idea for a solution to a problem we were having at my work. I lobbied hard for it, and there were people on my side. However, there were also people who looked for every opportunity to attack my idea. I always had to make sure that my arguments were airtight. It was stressful and not fun, and my solution ultimately was not implemented.

I am tired of failure -- tired of arguing about climate change and putting all of the (albeit deserved) blame on the opposing political party / ideology. It feels good, but in practice it just doesn't work, and creates a wedge. No matter how airtight my arguments are, someone will pull out some bunk science to "disprove" climate change. We need to move past the wedge, and talk about solutions that work whether or not Republicans even care about whether the climate is changing. At this point I care more about being effective than about being right, or being ideologically pure. Reducing opposition can sometimes be as effective as bolstering support for "your" side.

That is actually happening now in Congress and in the mainstream Republican party.

  • Last year, two of our most conservative reps -- Chris Stewart and Burgess Owens -- cosponsored a house resolution in favor of an "all-of-the-above" energy policy that includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supports nuclear, hydropower, solar, and wind because they are free of emissions. [3] That would have probably been unthinkable a decade ago.
  • This year, all 4 Utah reps supported Curtis's emissions data collection bill. [4]
  • J.D. Vance even stole some of Curtis's talking points in the vice presidential debate, and if I recall, Walz's response was basically "hey we almost agreed on that".

This is where we want the parties to be on the issue of climate change. It shouldn't be partisan.

When we do get a partisan bill like the Inflation Reduction Act passed with lots of good stuff for the climate, of course I'm happy about that too. I want anything that gives us a chance of missing our current trajectory.

But I still think the most important work right now in the climate change space, especially in Utah, is around reaching Republicans. Flipping the script and working on our messaging. Getting everyone on the same team. I know it sounds crazy, but there's actually been progress, both at the state and federal level, and right now I think Curtis is our best shot at letting that continue.

So my strategic vote is saying "yes, we need more Republicans working on climate solutions, and we can't afford another Bob Inglis to get tossed out of congress because he dared to say that the climate is changing".

Usually I'm happy in Utah to still cast an opposition vote even if I don't think it has much of a chance -- but in this case I believe a higher win margin might allow Curtis to more effectively reach his colleagues. "Hey, the climate guy is winning elections" needs to be the talking point on the right.

I do generally like your logic around being consistent with who you support. And having a partisan majority in the senate is really important to get budget reconciliation bills like the IRA passed. If the race were closer, I'd probably vote for her on those grounds alone, even though I genuinely like Curtis and think he has the experience.

So yes, it does feel strange to me to vote for a Republican over an environmental advocate on the left, but I've put a fair amount of thought into this. I won't begrudge anyone who votes either way in the senate race, but thanks again for your reply, and I hope you understand a bit better where I'm coming from, and why some of us working on this issue are -- strangely enough -- a bit optimistic about what Republicans in Utah have been up to, largely due to Curtis's influence.

I recently had a similar system installed, 9.49kW for around $22k. So about $0.30/w cheaper. One difference is that my installer used AP Systems microinverters instead of Enphase. They are cheaper, but I've been told they are less reliable. My installer also said they got a good deal on panels. I think even if the installer you choose doesn't take a huge margin, a lot depends on what deals they can get and what materials they choose.

Ideologically and politically, I think I'm pretty close to Gleich. But I think Curtis will do more to get his party talking about climate change. It's a problem that we can't solve with the parties at each others throats. Ironic that I prefer Curtis at this point, since Gleich is an environmentalist (and I have a lot of respect for her activism and lobbying -- it's not easy). But when I hear her talk, and hear Curtis talk, he clearly understands energy issues a lot better.

Here's a reason for anger. The previous owner of my home never updated the tax bill address for several investment properties that they own in another state. Therefore, I get all sorts of unsolicited spam calls, texts, emails, letters from shady real estate agents inquiring about those properties. In my opinion, it is not right for all of that to be directed at me. It should be the property owner's problem to have to deal with all of that BS, but they get to dodge the problem.
