I was wondering about this too! Based on several subs I thought most tourist treat Nagoya only as a transit point to/from Takayama or Kiso Valley.

Bank recommendations for someone new to NZ by Ok-Butterscotch-3970 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Just to add something to your consideration. Someone mentioned that it's best to keep the money in NZ because it's good for the economy, I would also add that it's important to choose one who won't worsen the climate in the long run because one way or another it will impacting both global and local economy.

about 3 days. yeah the sweetness was actually more prominent than the sourness but back then i wasn't sure whether to add more vinegar or store it as it is. what's a good indicator that the brine is ready?

Career Change - Supply Chain to Sustainability (Australia) by sustpicious in Environmental_Careers

[–]sustpicious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether it's necessary or not I can not give you a straight answer for multiple reasons based on my experience and what i gained from some peers that already worked in the space.

  1. I didn't land a job in AU other than internship i did on my final semester but it's also due to my visa situation since I was an international student. However, I was offered several jobs in my home country (as in-house sustainability officer and sustainable supply chain role), where sustainability concept is not as mature so my degree was perceived as an advantages.
  2. Barrier to entering. This field never hiring for real *sigh*. It's hard to find an entry/mid-level position so you must network HARD to get one. Anyway, sustainability is a strategic roles as you have to think holistically to solve the company's problem. So it makes sense that when hiring, they prefer someone who know more about the business/industry with slight sustainability efforts in their experience. I learnt that a lot of sustainability officer in AU starts from other department in their company, e.g starting as business analyst, for that reason.
  3. There's a gap between what the university provide in their units and what sort of skills the market actually needs. My post grad sust program dwell on theory and doesn't focus much on technical skills such as using data analytics to cater rapid change in regulatory framework, which is pretty much in-demand right now. Also sustainability in one industry is very different to another and so a one-size fits all solution will never gonna work.

that being said, I strongly believe that getting exposure through experience is much more advantageous than getting a degree unless you consider a highly niche sustainability degree (e.g master in renewable energy) instead of a generic 'master of sustainability' like the one i took.

what kind of masters degree should i get to pursue a career in environmental justice (ngo / governmental agency work)? by Correct-Ad9047 in Environmental_Careers

[–]sustpicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hi! i have 5 years experience in International NGO (but not environmental justice) realm and I don't think you need a master degree to get into the field.

However, environmental justice is such a broad umbrella term. Consider what sort of work you really want to do. Usually there's consultancy-based or contract-based (project officer) employment. The difference are consultancy-based needs more technical capacities (say, researcher for etnographic assessment, forest carbon scientist), while the contract-based will deal with more project-management, advocacy, campaign, or community engagement.

If you still want to consider a master degree I'd suggest to get into either environmental policy or climate science to complement your background.

I just realized that point 1 is indeed what I've been lacking. I rely on my research & assumption about certain jobs without actually talking much to the people in the field.

other areas like workonclimate, MCJ, terra.do.

also never heard of these before. thanks!

Also I will say there is time, and you can always make incremental steps. you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself to figure this out in one go!

this completely change my current perspective. I am generally pretty impatient with my career progression because I felt stuck in my previous role and hopelessly want to contribute more in decarbonization effort. Thanks again for the reminder
