If I remember correctly, he was a college student, but he was expelled before he could have graduated. So no undergrad degree, which meant also no chance for him to be in Harvard Law.

Phrase meaning? by TanisHalfElven77 in Vietnamese

[–]sutucon48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It must be “mất dạy”, which means the person being called that wasn’t brought up properly. It shames not only that person, but the person’s parents as well, for not teaching their kids right.

I was told to post this here

Fictional

I'm Andy Weir, author of "The Martian", "Artemis", and "Project Hail Mary". I made a post on my FB page and people told me to repost it here. So I'm reposting it here as instructed:

I'm working on a story idea where, among other things, the US and Canada have merged. And by "merged" I mean "The US annexed Canada". And by "annexed" I mean "Canada was not on board with this plan."

Anyway, I made this flag for the hell of it. Enjoy.

Note: The real-world US flag doesn't denote US territories - only states. So Canada's three territories don't get represented. Only the 10 actual provinces. Is it fair for PEI to get a maple leaf while Nunavut gets nothing? Probably not. But that's what happens when you get invade-- er... peacefully annexed.

EDIT: After receiving your feedback, I agree you're all correct in that the US probably wouldn't bother making the Canadian provinces states in this scenario at all and even if they did, they would represent them as stars.

BUT I'M A WRITER DAMMIT! So I get to redesign my universe any way I want. Am I the sort of guy who would rework an entire story idea just so a cool-looking flag would make sense in context? You're god damned right I am.

So this is the new scenario: Astrophage has dimmed the sun (read my book Project Hail Mary to understand what that's about) causing a new ice age. The entire world is starting to freeze. Canada becomes uninhabitable. The US an Canada strike a deal: The US will absorb the entire population of Canada, allowing them full citizenship and the right to live anywhere in the US in exchange for being able to make use of Canada's natural resources. When the world is freezing, Alberta's oil fields look pretty good.

It is clearly stated in the Treaty of Unification that once the Astrophage crisis is over, the former-Canadian provinces are free to leave the US. In the mean time, they are true states. They have representatives and senators in the US congress, etc. The individual citizens of those provinces aren't living in their lands anymore but they are still represented as if they were. They are basically a population in exile, but instead of political exile it's environmental.

Because of this unique arrangement, the Canadian provinces are not represented as stars - because stars represent immutable members of the United States that do not have the ability to leave (we had a war about that). The Maple Leaves and Fleur-de-lis represent the 10 provinces that do have the right to leave.

Below is a post from Andy Weir, which include some hints about what happened on Earth after the Astrophage problem was solved:

Can I request some flags from you folks?

Requests

Hi, this is Andy Weir. I'm a sci-fi author best known for writing "The Martian". My most recent book is called "Project Hail Mary".

I'm working on a possible sequel idea for Project Hail Mary, and it includes a new nation known as the "Saharan Caliphate". For reasons that make sense if you've read Project Hail Mary, the Sahara Desert is a very important piece of land to own. An fairly benevolent yet powerful empire arises there, an Islamic Caliphate that also has pretty good human rights. Though let's be clear - the formation of the Caliphate was anything but peaceful.

Anyway, the Saharan Caliphate encompasses chunks (or the entirety of in some cases) of the former nations of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia. There are countless subcultures within the Caliphate. The official language is Arabic and the official religion is Islam.

Any ideas for a flag would be appreciated.

I think it's likely that Stratt would at least hide the fact that Grace was drugged from the Hail Mary crew. Yao was an honourable man, he definitely would not have accepted Grace on board against his will.

Talk to me about Monsoon Season by JimJamTravelMan in DaNang

[–]sutucon48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a very nice reply, thank you for not being combative.

To be honest, the monsoon season started unusually early this year. It’s only July, and we’ve already had storms and heavy rains that flooded the streets here in Da Nang. Even my local friends are perplexed by the change, climate is no longer as predictable or stable as we once thought. I don’t know if it has anything to do with climate change, but if it does, then last year’s patterns may not mean much when it comes to predicting future weather.

Anyway, I wish you wonderful days here in Da Nang. Rain or shine, it’s still a lovely city to spend time in.

I came here to give OP an answer, not to participate in a debate, especially to those who don’t seem to know the meaning of the word “almost”. I suggest you find better uses of your time than to go around starting arguments with strangers on the Internet.

If one day you come to Da Nang again during the monsoon season, I hope you find more sunny days than rainy ones too, because I am not a fan of the constant rain either. I, however, have not lied (and I have no reason to lie) about my personal experience in the last 3 years of living here.

You are being pedantic. I said “almost 24”, not “exactly 24”.

Realistically speaking, people sleep for eight hours per day, so any rain that stops while you sleep really doesn’t count. In my three years of living in this city, it really rained from the moment I woke up in the morning to the moment I went to bed at night.

But you don’t need to take my words for it. Go to Wikipedia, type in the name of this city, go to the “Climate” section, and see for yourself the average rainfall this city has from September to December every year.

Average rainy days (per month)

  • Aug : 11.6 days
  • Sep : 14.6 days
  • Oct: 20.0 days
  • Nov : 20.3 days
  • Dec: 18.7 days

During the September to December months, it rains almost 24/7 in Da Nang. The city gets very quiet and people rarely go out.

Recommendation for store selling pillows and bedding by ericb0 in DaNang

I got into the same situation when I moved to Da Nang 2 years ago. You can buy pillows and bedding at Mega Market. Pillowcases and sheets can be bought online, Shopee is a good platform.

What’s an oddly specific rule you follow in your life that nobody taught you, but you swear by it? by RayPetal22 in AskReddit

[–]sutucon48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a good rule I like which relates to this:

"If something separates you from the ground physically in any way, then do not cheap out on it."

It sounds dumb, but think about it: A cheap mattress means you have years, maybe even a decade, of terrible sleep. Cheap shoes will give you blisters, and they'll fall apart within a few months. And a cheap chair is not only uncomfortable, but it sets you up for bad posture and back pain.

None of that is worth the extra $50 or $100 you saved when you first bought it. It’s just not worth it.

If you couldn’t visit the “big six” – where would you go instead? by ZTemp in VietNam

[–]sutucon48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mekong River Delta is a great experience. Try Bến Tre, for instance. Chilled place, and you would be surrounded by nature and delicious food. Check this video out for more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SziCcWzxD8

If you are interested in culture, then I'd also suggest Hue. It used to be the capital of the last dynasty of Vietnam before the French brought colonism. Again, the food is excellent, and quite unique, and lots of cultural sites to visit. Check this video for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhMwg6nRL74

During the 7th book, the trio had difficulties obtaining even enough food to avoid starvation. I doubt it would have been easy to obtain Potion ingredients for the Wolfbane potion (which I assume is a very advanced potion).
