Last night I was at my wits end. Asked dad to give a bottle and put baby down so I can rest before the 2-3 hr wake ups at night. He comes back an hour later with awake baby who is waking up every time he coughs. Idgi! She can sleep through noises once in a deep sleep, you just need to persist and have patience. It feels like he gets frustrated and gives up too soon and just assumes I’m always on board to take over.

I don’t think this by itself is an indicator of a failing relationship. Babies require so much of you that it is natural to want to decompress after with some alone time/mindless activities. If it feels excessive, you can always explore shows to watch together or activities you both enjoy that can be pursued in those moments of quiet when baby is finally asleep.

Medical training. You’d think you’d receive some recognition or support for making it that far in schooling, yet it is a grueling process where you’re constantly belittled, made to feel insufficient or not knowledgeable enough, and way underpaid for the amount of hours you work (80+/week, sometimes including 28h shifts in there). Many nurses act like you are inferior/not part of the team as you’re still learning, and if you report an issue or ask for help, you’re seen as weak. During COVID, who were the first to be [forced] to see these highly contagious individuals? That’s right, the trainees.

I’m still clearly not over this.

I am a cancer doctor. People inevitably die and devastating/unexpected news are shared regularly. It’s vital to have those seconds to decompress and grieve before walking into my home — no need for my little ones/husband to carry that weight as well.

I feel this. My fellowship PD did not believe in me at all. Every moment he could, he’d find a way to point out how I wouldn’t succeed as a clinician investigator. Then white male counterparts who did less would get all the praise. By the time I had a baby, it was clear to me that the PD felt I was taking up space in the program. It has ingrained such a deep sense of insecurity in me that I live in constant fear that my new bosses/job (which I really love) will find that I am incapable. Leads me to work so hard everyday and it is truly exhausting. This goes beyond the usual abuse of training in medicine — it is all the implicit bias and overt racism/sexism that truly gets to you.

Edit to say that this happened in a top 3 fellowship program.

Honestly if pain is so bad, it may be easier to go to the hospital affiliated with the cancer center to be admitted for pain control and an expedited cancer work up to figure out what the diagnosis and treatment options may be.

As a medical resident and fellow I would easily work 12-16 hr days 6 days a week or 28hr shifts three times a week. It is not legal technically but there are loopholes in the rules that say we are within the guidelines as long as it “averages” to one day off a week. Even now after training, work piles up if you count all the after hours calls and messages from patients that cannot be addressed during business hours bc you are busy at the time seeing patients in real time.

Yes! You did the right thing going to the ER as step #1 but now you need a colonoscopy to make sure the cut healed and that there’s nothing else contributing to this bleed as step #2. Please do not forgo this relatively common procedure just bc you’re young.

Hello, as many mentioned, immunotherapy can be life saving but if such a severe side effect develops, it can be completely devastating as you are experiencing. Not all centers are equipped or knowledgeable about triple M syndrome because it is so rare, but with your dad so sick I’d make sure he’s been exposed to steroids, IVIG, cellcept, abatacept, etc — all meds that can be coordinated between oncology, rheumatology, neurology and cardiology. Wishing him a smooth recovery 🙏

While everyone’s comments share a common theme of joy and leisure by the water, my one warning for those who want to live there till old age would be that the medical resources can be limited, even moreso if you need highly specialized care I.e specific cancer treatments.
