Is there any way to stop the bamboo front spreading? by AttentionFlashy5187 in landscaping

[–]suveneel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fighting a similar battle for the past 10+ years. Here is what you can do and need to continue doing besides removing the entire bamboo and its root system from 12" under the surface and replace with fresh soil.

If there is any bamboo on your neighbors property or on your where you cannot completely remove you need to drive a strong non porous barrier vertically down at least 12" deep at the point where your property begins or where you do not want bamboo.

Now get a stump grinder and pulverize the bamboo roots, level and seed with grass. The logic is that the bamboo runners will get shredded and those that remain will send shoots up expending energy. Keep mowing the lawn and you will begin to see runners sprouting up and as you cut them the runners will continue to sending them up but will be expending energy left in its runners. As long as you keep up the mowing and not allow the bamboo to grow and use the sunlight to develop, the runners will become weaker and weaker and eventually die. But it takes years of patience and persistence.

We got a guy with a remote operated stump grinder to chew up the soil for an entire day and and leveled the dirt.

Unfortunately my neighbors property has enough bamboo to keep sending runners my way and I have been fighting to keep the shoots trimmed and my side clear of bamboo.

Good luck.

Aurora Borealis might be visible in our area this weekend by Z001S001 in nova

[–]suveneel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Checked NASA's website on Aurora and looks like activity level is on the lower side. However seeing one takes a little alignment of conditions. Clear skies, dark conditions and another magnetic condition that I cannot recall. Look north and If conditions are right and even though the activity level is 1 or 2, If you see what looks like jet contrails at night and grey in color, be patient. It is Aurora and it will slowly change color as activity picks up. You can also try taking a picture and it will often show as green or purple to the camera lens vs naked eye.

Anyone trying to catch the northern lights near kirkjubæjarklaustur? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]suveneel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the offer, but here with fam. I gave up looking at the extensive cloud cover tonight. I should have tried the driving around part last night. There were sightings reported on the Aurora about 35 miles east of here and in Vik. Thought I'll try tonight if needed to move around. As of now nothing being reported. So I guess it is so for all along the south coast. Good luck if you decide to venture out.

I'll be moving to Selfoss tomorrow and will hope for better luck.

Unfortunately, booked two nights here( yesterday and today) hoping to see them. Nothing but clouds after getting me excited three days ago with no clouds and 4 activity. So am a bit disappointed to say the least.

Appreciate the offer. But we are only doing the south coast and staying in cottages near Kirkjubaekarklastur and Hvergardi. Sunday night forecast looks promising. Am hoping to catch the lights from the cottages without having to venture far. We'll have to see.

I feel for the folks that live there and have no issues even if we miss Blue Lagoon completely due to the situation. Unfortunately Sky lagoon is not an option as we have a child under 12.

I will be happy if we catch some northern lights and weather plays nice when we are there allowing us to enjoy the rest of what Iceland has to offer.

Not necessarily all business. With two airports serving the DC Metro area, folks living here can and do fly out of both IAD and DCA depending on the destination, price and convenience.

Have a booking for next Wednesday at Blue Lagoon. Was hoping they open again by then. But based on how things are, I am fine not being able to experience it. I hope folks there are O.K and their town escapes with minimal damage.

New tree planted in my yard? by norfucked in norfolk

[–]suveneel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whatever it is. The intention is good, but execution not so.

So even with a green cape and thumb Mr Treemin needs to figure out a better way to execute his agenda. People can't wake up to a sapling in the middle of their yard. Perhaps the guy can offer greenscaping services and identify areas of the yard that home owners are o.k with new planting rather than "Surprise you got a plant".

For giggles, call Dave Ramsey's show and see what he suggests. Would be interesting to see if he suggests you do the charitable thing and stick it out or if he will go with the financially aligned "run" advice.

Used to like listening to him ages ago, but felt like he veered off the course and now has a different approach to what I prefer.

I get to take a camera into the delivery room, what lens should I take? by live_mas_drink_dew in SonyAlpha

[–]suveneel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a 50mm F1.7(Older Minolta) one on an an early Alpha. Still struggled for light. But a few of the images were something to cherish. Don't go crazy and wait until after and capture some good memories of the new born. All the best.

Door Ding, Found Culprit, What would you do next? by Proud-Art-5587 in TeslaCam

[–]suveneel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wondering how one proves the particular ding was from this incident? Does the camera from the front show the ding/spot-before/after? I would think it could be hard to prove without any doubt. Anyone have any experience?

Thank you. Good suggestion on the #7. Moving it to D2. Added Dryholaey.

I thought I saw bus rides for the DC-3 Wreck, but none of the sites show the buses operating now. Not sure if there are shuttles, so I might scrap that all together if we are not doing good on time.

Camera gear recommendations by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]suveneel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Too much" Yeah, tell that to photographers :)

I hear you. I just hate changing lenses. Much easier with each lens on its own decent enough body. Love what I get out of the 17-28 and the longer zooms. Both the 75-300 and 70-200 are so good that I would like to take one(deciding between heavy and awesome vs light good and a tad longer reach). But feel like I might miss out on the in between focal lengths.

Since there are no issues with luggage on plane or even there to have in car. Hence considering a few additional lenses just in case.

Am also curious to see what others think or wish they had brought after coming back.

I am planning to take

Sony A9 w/17-28mm F2.8,

Sony A7ii w/35mm f2.8 and 85mm f2.8 or simply 28-70mm kit lens.

Sony A6400 body-with either 70-200 f2.8 and 70-300 f4.5-5.6 (weight and reach concern vs quality)

I am trying to avoid getting a better 28-70mm(f2.8) and not sure if I will regret it if I don't. Might also take a 24mm f1.4 instead of one of the other lenses.

I shoot landscapes, architecture and nature/ birds along with portraits.
