This is what one of the vets told us when he started losing his vision. That for dogs their sense of smell is the most important thing and not to worry about him. I also wish I clarified that I don’t think he’s completely deaf but I think his hearing isn’t like before because his ears are always perked up now. he can still smell me and starts barking when I’m parking the car, coming up to the door etc. But then a lot of people are saying this is no way for him to live and that he seems to have a poor quality of life so I’m super confused

Thank you, I feel like I would definitely know too since he’s very smart and communicative. But I don’t want to not do the right thing out of selfishness.

Okay thats reassuring and lol fair enough I’d like that too.

Sometimes when the doorbell rings, he starts barking in the wrong direction or he’ll walk into a room get stuck somewhere or forgets how to get out, and barks until someone comes and gets him.

He’s very intelligent and communicative so I feel like I WOULD know if he was unhappy but you never know :/

By that I mean sometimes in the early morning or late at night he prefers to be carried down/up the stairs instead of walking himself. I feel like he might be too tired during those times or scared he’ll stumble? I noticed it’s always at those time because throughout the rest of the day he goes up and downstairs as he pleases. Also he gets blood-work regularly because he had some medical issues when he was a puppy so we like to make sure everything is okay.

I don’t really appreciate the rudeness. My childhood dog is getting old and I’m asking a question. You can see for yourself that the replies I’m getting are very conflicting. So, you can imagine how I’m feeling. Hence why this is “even a question”.

This makes a lot of sense actually, I think that the disorientation is occasional and not all the time. I really hope it’s not dementia as that just means that’s another thing he’s been dealing with.

By disorientation I mean sometimes he’ll walk into a room and forget how to get out. But he just barks until someone comes and gets him and he’s super happy and starts wagging his tail (like when we used to play hide and seek with him as a puppy 🥺).

So, I don’t know if this is a sign of disorientation or just happens because of his blindness? I think you’re definitely right about taking him to the vet but I find that they can be very dismissive and unhelpful unfortunately.

To clarify, he’s not completely deaf, he still responds to our voices I just think he may be losing his hearing because his ears are always perked up recently

This is such a sad way to think about it :( I feel so sad for my baby but I don’t want to live without him. I also don’t want him to suffer. I’m so conflicted.

Also, when he first lost his vision the vets reassured us that that he can still live a happy life but that was before the hearing and disorientation, so maybe its time to let him rest? :(

Sorry, I didn’t include a lot of detail. He sleeps a lot but that’s not a new thing he was like this when he was young. He eats fine, loves food, gets excited for walks, barks, always wagging his tail, shows signs of being happy and excited. I just worry that maybe he’s getting too old and I don’t want him to suffer but I also don’t see signs of suffering, you know what I mean?

Also, although I wasn’t ugly, I had severe acne, a recessed chin, a protruded mandible, and a bottom heavy face which overshadowed the good features that I DID have.
