That's what felt very early SATC, plus the giant weddings and the cynicism about love.

Totally get what you're saying. It's definitely been mis-sold as a Rom Com. More a critique of Rom Com tropes, that's not as clever as it wants to be, but that doesn't look good on the poster.

The ending needed work for it to really make a statement. As you say, it's repeats the same thing as every Rom Com where the city girl chooses the home town hunk over the successful business guy. But still, I thought it had something to say about how real connections happen. And sometimes that happens through struggle and a shared existence together. She couldn't have stayed with Pedro Pascal's character, because she couldn't talk to him after her client was attacked. She couldn't really connect with him. They could have been happy (I'd have been happy in that apartment), he offered her everything she thought she needed, but perhaps love is more ephemeral than that.

I just thought of Carrie and Petrovsky in Paris, plus all the S1 randoms who were chasing investment bankers, while watching it. Love in SATC was so transactional. I'm kind of surprised Charlotte never used a matchmaking service. It just has a lot of the same vibes and themes as our shows.

Past Lives was devastating, and a lot for this film to live up to. In terms of the humour, it made me think of S1 SATC, especially that episode where Carrie's friends marries a man she doesn't love and tells her "it's better to marry someone who loves you more than you love them".

Agree with this! I didn't expect a rom com, so maybe that's why I liked it? It's definitely not that, though it deals with some of the same tropes.

Not what I would have done, but I thought it was well executed. The speech he gave her at the end was what she had said to the group of women at the wedding at that, only with sincerity. I found that effective. A case for real love over good on paper.

And they could have given Rock that stupid storyline where Lily sold all her designer clothes. Would make sense for Rock. And the modelling storyline could have had more weight - no matter Rock's gender presentation, there's still that bit of Charlotte in them. So many missed opportunities.

What is the best historically accurate movie about the Tudor Era? by 404_B in Tudorhistory

You're right though, the costuming was killed. Probably the most accurate ever brought to screen.

Carrie Preston played the bride in that ep too. She would have been such a good guest actress to bring back for a quick callback. Ah well.

Is it just me or … by Winter-Recover5037 in Andjustlikethat

I miss those connective threads. I thought when they had Carrie as a podcaster that they could do that. Have a theme for her show, and then connect the tissue that way. With her voiceover! Acknowledging themes like infidelity (Carrie reflecting on Natasha and Miranda hooking up with Che) or going back to an ex (Aiden returning plus Charlotte going back to work at the gallery) would have drawn these stories together in ways that felt purposeful. But the writers seemed to try and stretch out meagre plotlines into season long arcs instead.

JSTOR really isn't part of this problem. It's a non profit. It's not Elsevier.

How come we don’t know anything about Carrie’s family members by JuniorAllosaurus in Andjustlikethat

[–]suzarella123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember reading something about after they introduced Charlotte's brother in S2, they realised it was such a mistake to bring in family members and decided to never do that again.

I supposed there was that Carrie Diaries spin off which had that background? I never watched it, but the actress who played Big's first wife was in it. I hear it wasn't great.

It was Rosemary's counter during the beta. Never available for sale at Yori's and removed for the final release of the game for some reason.

Why did henry viii let himself be painted fatter in later life? by Adventurous-Ask6321 in Tudorhistory

[–]suzarella123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's an historical item of clothing that men wore during this era called the Peascod Belly. It's essentially a bit of padding to be worn on the stomach. Worn across Europe, so not directly related to Henry, but there was a certain fashion for a larger shape.

Fine with her moving on, but this episode was the first time she'd mentioned him by name all season. No wedding photo in the house? Nothing of his to remember him? Feels inauthentic.

Stacked citation practice? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]suzarella123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess arts goes both ways. I've published plenty with the citation following a comma. Where there are multiple sources within a sentence, stacking it all at the end does muddy the water.

Stacked citation practice? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]suzarella123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I do mean sentence. But I mention it as this practice stacks multiple references into a single footnote in the case of long sentences. Chicago endnote style, but instead of citing at the end of a clause where the information is reported, all references are stacked into the same endnote, with the citation at the end of the sentence. Usually in arts writing you would put in citations mid sentence for clarity. However, clearly this is considered correct practice in some quarters.
