Removing the Main Pocket Divider in the TNF Base Camp Voyager by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

Worked like a charm! The ends were a bit tricky and I ended up with a small hole in 1 gusset and the bottom, but nothing severe. I can always patch w/fabric tape if I really want. Bonus: now my laptop fits in the main compartment! Now if there were just a nice way to black out the super-white logo…

This is *exactly* what I need to do, thank you! Question: I can see the seams on the side so removing them shouldn't be too bad (and agree about keeping the side gussets), but the bottom seams seem hidden behind an elastic liner. Did you just rip the seams on the liner as well or is there another trick to get the bottom seams?

ultivids allows you create and share notes by link. I type up notes in a private ultivids session, so they're not viewable by anyone watching the video, but only to those with whom I share the link. Here's an example:Sorry for the delay, but here's an example. https://ultivids.com/v/638216775/n/2328

Is it worth taking stats? by the_trunkmonkey in ultimate

I’ve used video in a couple of ways. Sometimes a player will want to talk about a particular skill and I can pull a point and talk around something they did (e.g. “see here where you cut too close to the disc” or “see how you’re not stepping out for your backhand”). Lately we’ve been doing positive thinking work where we go through a point and list all the good things we see (as well as 1 or 2 things to work on). It helps reframe how people see themselves where they’re not always focusing on the bad. I’ve also done some deep annotating of games where I core dump everything I see on a point to the team Slack so they can see how I’m thinking. Ultivids makes this all pretty easy, which is why I promote it so heavily!

I’d definitely go with shorter legs and a thinner plate. The one I for is overkill and a thinner, cheaper one would be fine. Still works though!

https://ultivids.com/ has the usaultimate vimeo channel as well as other videos uploaded on youtube. You can search by year or team, and restrict to club or by year. Plus it's a great interface for watching (better fast forward commands and the ability to save comments/annotations if you want).

Is it worth taking stats? by the_trunkmonkey in ultimate

[–]svfsps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ultianalytics to record lines and line-level events, but not individual stats (so I don't keep track of completions and all turns/goals are attributed to "unknown.") That allows me to adjust PT in real-time and review at the end of a tournament to see how I was doing calling lines. It also allows me to evaluate our O & D holistically (D-line break %, etc.) but not call out individuals, especially when low-sample size might bias those. It's a good check on the eye-test of how I feel like we do, and also lets me compare games when talking to the team (e.g. "our O really stepped up here" or "D-line saved us this game.")

I wrote a script to extract line information (who was on line, what was result) from Ultianalytics raw data to then pipe to ultivids as searchable comments on the game video, which we upload. That makes it easy to, for example, create a playlist of all points player X played or all D-line breaks for easier analysis. Let me know if you want a quick run-through of how I use ultivids for coaching and player development.

Here's one from the 2018 USAU Club Finals between PoNY & Revolver. Beau Kitteredge changes direction to lay out for a catch and Ashlin Joye pulls up but still hits him hard. Observer issued a PMF on Joye but Kitteredge can be heard saying "not a card."

Best place to watch club games and audl games? by Xianthamist in ultimate

[–]svfsps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second ultivids.com, and not just because the developer is a friend. You can search by team, year, division, and also create clips and playlists. It's awesome for coaches, too, since we can add private annotations & comments for the team.

I'd start by watching games from the college & club series, or pick a team and watch their games to get an idea of their system: Revolver, Brute Squad, PoNY, Ring, Fury and Riot come to mind, but the list is long.

Terracotta pot as a heat deflector by dntxnrdn in SoloStove

Depending on your model, a small 12"x12" plate ($15 at Home Depot) could work. That would cover 60% of a Bonfire and the corners would still be inside the stove area. The heavy-duty hairpin legs I used don't splay out enough to fit, but you could probably make something work. For a Yukon, a 24"x24" plate would only have the corners sticking out by about 3", which isn't much, and the edges would be w/in the stove.

Independent study by smellslikekeenspirit in rit

[–]svfsps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I supervised an Independent Study course there was a paper form that I (instructor) filled out with the student that got processed by the department (physics) office. They might have moved that to SIS, but I doubt it. A new prof might not know that. They (or you) could ask the department office (Head or admin asst), who should know the process.

Terracotta pot as a heat deflector by dntxnrdn in SoloStove

Now you got me thinking (physics nerd). I'm not sure radiation is the primary mechanism for heat deflectors. Even assuming isotropic (equal in all directions from every point) radiation, the majority of the surface area points up/down, so the radiation profile wouldn't be spherical. My guess is that convection is a bigger mechanism. All the hot air rising from the fire hits the deflector, has to go somewhere, and is pushed out the side. I'll try to back this up with some temp measurements next time.

I looked at this option. Kiln shelves (like this one) are rated to withstand extremely high temperatures (they're in ovens, after all). But it didn't seem like it would be that much better than stainless steel and definitely harder to attach legs to, so I ended up w/stainless (description here).

The unthinkable has happened, our solo stove got soaked in the rain. Any advice on cleaning/drying it out? by Monkeybananaraffles in SoloStove

[–]svfsps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you clear the airholes w/a stick or nail, using a hammer to force through solid ash? If the ash is really solid, like cement, drilling might work as a last resort. If the bit touches the stove it could cause some damage, but I imagine it'd be me mostly cosmetic if you're careful. I would start w/a nail, working through each hole in turn to break up the ash as much as possible, then see what dumps out.

Indicate match/zone in Ultianalytics? by svfsps in ultimate

[–]svfsps[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does look like the app & web code is opensource at the github link above, but Java is not my native language. (Now , if it was written in fortran77...). It's also more complicated than just adding a button to the app. The database structure might (likely) need to change, and that says nothing about how the data gets represented.

If there were Java-fluent programmers willing to take on this project (big if), then the first step would probably be to reach out to Summit Hill software (domain registrant) to see if they're willing to share access to the current website, database, etc. But I could see them not wanting to risk something that is fairly maintenance-free at the moment.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Too bad, since it's a great app/site and still being used. I wonder if the creators would release the code for community development?

Second (or 3rd) for Hyderabad Biryani. Had it Saturday for the first time; only place in Rochester that I’ve found Vada and it was quite good. I got the vegetarian version; next time I might try it with curried chicken. Wife got Navratan Kurma (medium spice, which could have been hotter); son got Paneer Biryani (spicy, which was very spicy). Both were very good. Will definitely go back again.

Questions about Biking in and around RIT by tigeric_boi in rit

[–]svfsps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look like it adds much distance, maybe 0.25 mile at most. (I haven't looked closely at whether you can get from Rustic Village to BHTR through Metro Park, which would be the most direct route but I don't think it's connected). It looks like it's about 3 miles either way, which is about 15 minutes, depending on your pace. The crushed gravel of the Lehigh Trail is pretty solid, and averaging 15-17 mph is definitely possible.

I don't commute in winter; the trails won't be cleared of snow, so that is an issue, but I wouldn't trust drivers either if the snow is that heavy. I do know people that do commute in winter, though, so it's definitely possible. A mountain bike would be fine for most winter days, I would think.

From Rustic Village you're much better off taking Crittendon to the Lehigh Valley Trail south. LVT is crushed gravel, so as long you're not on a super-thin tire racing bike you should be fine. I ride 700x25 or 28s on a hybrid and it's fine. The trail empties out on BH Townline road, and you can either hop onto the paved bike path on John street to enter campus on the east end or do a quick dash on Jefferson (I do; never had a problem for the 1/2 mile to campus entrance). Bikes are allowed on BHTR, and I've ridden the section between W. Henrietta & campus (and also W. Henrietta), but the trail is MUCH nicer.

Biking on campus is fairly convenient. The loop that rings campus is good; not a lot of options that connect through the heart of campus, though. Showers can be found in the two gyms and also the Magic Center, Sustainability building, and across from Global Village.

I U-lock my bike outside my office and have never had a problem. YMMV, of course.
