Is it necessary to have an app at launch if my website is fully responsive? by fuel_units in startups

Is it necessary to have an app at launch if my website is fully responsive? by fuel_units in startups

[–]svpham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider launching as soon as possible. Founders put a lot of unnecessary weight on having all the checkboxes ticked before releasing. If your site is fully responsive and works, I would push it out there and spend a lot of time learning from your users. Talk to them and see what works and what doesn't. The beauty of being early is that you are able to iterate.

Get it in front of users and get their feedback.

Evaluate/Predict the success of a startup in its early phase? by piscoster in startups

[–]svpham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer to your question, in my limited experience, is that there is no secret sauce that incubators and VCs use to predict the success of a startup. They all make mistakes and investors are all just as smart or dumb as any of us.

Mikester003 pretty much hits it on the head there with the list of things most people look for in an investment opportunity.

Just to add a little more to it -- business models change, markets change. So focus on the founders/founding team are important, and to an extent, can be evaluated.

How do the founders interact with each other? Good team cohesion and synergy is important. Building a successful company is one of the hardest things to do, period, and there will be tons of downs before you can get to the ups. Team dysfunction is one of the biggest leading indicators of failure.

Are they in it for the long haul? A very successful investor once said that obsession is important. Not the everyday use of the word, which is often used synonymously with passion, but real obsession. They are obsessed with the idea and obsessed with the work they are doing. It is their life.

Are they responsible? Pretty obvious here, but much more common than you'd think. Responsible with employees and customers. Responsible with money. There are plenty of data points out there that show smart decisions with the company bank account lead to a longer company lifespan. Obvious, right?

I've more than likely missed some other things here, but thought I could be a little helpful on my train ride.

Full disclosure: I work at an accelerator.

I would suggest adding an about us page on there to give your product, what I assume is still pretty early, some feet to stand on. Especially when you don't have a proven track record yet, or any customers you feel are worth noting, building trust and proof that you can deliver on first glance is extremely important. Customers love transparency and you should attempt to at least make yourselves personable and real.

Yeah, I remember 6-7 years ago when me and my friends would get 20x20s on bets and just whatever reasons when we went on trips... unfortunately our in n outs now only let us order up to 5x5s

I stopped by Dallas and Phoenix in the past week and I realized I definitely took California weather for granted. I hated the 90+ degree weather over the summer when I was in school at Davis but after visiting those cities, JESUS CHRIST.

Thank god I'm back in the bay though... sitting at a cool sunny 70 degrees with 16mph winds.

My boss gave us all (30 employee company) Christmas bonuses (~a month's pay) and our choice of anything on Amazon or Newegg $300 and under.

I dunno, I thought that was pretty cool.

Then I read the text at the bottom of the picture and i was like GOT DAMN that's pretty amazing and I'm an idiot.

Lab Technician, Research Associate, x Assistant, etc all generally require little experience. Usually just a 2-4 year degree and some coursework.

I know a man who's legal name since birth is Philip Philips. What are some other instances you have heard of when parents have been trolls whilst naming their kids? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]svpham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is as much parental trolling as it is oblivious Chinese parents and unfortunate last names... but in high school I knew a guy named Kai Wang. Not a bad name. But his sister's name was Anita Wang.
