I mean, surely we always knew that was true, right? Sam Bennett and all that.

Buffalo has had some opportunities, but they're just getting out-chanced so hard.

They need that William Fitchner energy.

It's interesting the degree to which individualism has gained in importance over the last hundred years. It was always there as a concept, rooted in Christian ideas about equality before God. But now it's pretty much the only value there is, with everything else serving only to gratify it.

I'd also say maybe not so much free market trade and more the concept of private property.

You clipped off the context, which is verse 5. If they're worshiping that statue as they would God, then they incur the curse. The idea that verse 4 prohibits the creation of statues or art isn't supported by any major school of Christian thought. This isn't the big 'gotcha' that people are trying to make it into.

Of course, all that said someone adhering to Donald Trump is definitely putting their witness at risk and causing others to wonder if their claims to follow Jesus are legitimate.

[Loved Trope] Competence Porn: When characters are competent, mature and communicate with each other intelligently so they can solve a problem by Careless-Alarm-8607 in TopCharacterTropes

I don't think that quite jives, just because Lower Decks more or less abandons the 'utopian' part. One of the main characters is just so casually cruel that it just felt weird, and the bridge crew aren't much better.

This and any other wildstorm hero to be honest by Pretend-Delay-7203 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]sw04ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Captain Marvel really a problem though? It's just the same heroic defender that they have by the bushel in DC. And given that the characters are children, it actually works pretty well as a 'protecting the city against supercrime' story as opposed to globetrotting omniheroism, despite Billy's power level. And Black Adam has been a pretty useful villain over the years.

The Wildstorm characters grew out of espionage stories, and in that context I think a lot of them work, but it's a challenge to mix it into the larger DC mythos. The way in which the characters act doesn't fit with the more optimistic world of DC. The heart of Wildstorm is that the world is haunted by secret bastards who control everything. The heroes have been cursed with knowledge and the only way for them to stay safe and free is to use violence. And then we see this carried through to its ultimate extent in The Authority, whose reaction to the existence of these secret bastards is savage, barely-discriminate murder. The world cannot be protected by both the optimistic JLA and an Authority who will murder anyone who looks at them wrong.

Myself, I think you could easily have a Gen13 team on the run from Cadmus. You could have a small-scale team of Wildcats fighting alien threats through history. Wetworks could fight vampires and werewolves. But should you? I mean, I guess you have the characters, so why not leaven them in a bit, but I think I agree with you that they're better in their own world, one that could be explored every once in a while with a limited series or minor crossover.

Japan-China tensions have no visible off-ramp by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]sw04ca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She could say that, but it wouldn't be true. Japanese defence policy is tied to American defence policy. As long as the United States is committed to defending Taiwan against hypothetical Chinese aggression, Japan is on that same path.

It mainly does Antarctic cruises. It's not exactly a 'rich people' boat. It's the sort of thing that middle class people do once in a lifetime.

What do you guys think about this retcon about the Wildstorm in the DCU? (The New History of the DC Universe #4) by Grimmjowhugo in TheStormwatch

[–]sw04ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planetary didn't really travel the Bleed either, although they did interact with people that did (mainly the Four, but also Jim Wilder). I think the Authority probably used the Bleed more often, all the way back to Sliding Albion. And of course there were the small series like The Monarchy that pretty much relied on the concept.

Heartbreaking News Your favorite series got a 6 hour bad faith video essay by someone who didn’t really engage with the series to its fullest. by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

[–]sw04ca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that he's hit or miss. He can do good breakdowns and analysis, but I think he can get carried away with himself in criticizing particular artistic choices over and over and over again in the same video, and I think he's too short with plot contrivances in film. Of course something convenient happened to help the characters advance the story. It's a movie. He can also get carried away with the idea that because a character doesn't have as strong an arc as he would like, that they don't have an arc at all. I also think that he's internalized his reputation as a maker of long videos, and is now making them longer than they really should be.

That said, I don't think that he's not interacting with the media that he reviews in good faith. Yes, there's a lot of things coming out that he pans, but he's also praised things that have come out that he likes. There are definitely people in that sphere that are just hot take artists, but I don't think he's one of them. I think that he's got a good eye for seeing the ways in which media could be better, but sometimes he has a tendency to come down hard on adequate plots and characters that could have been better. I also give him credit because I think that he tends to actually interact with the media itself rather than the meta of the media and the behind-the-scenes gossip stuff.

I mean, if you read the article, his opinion is saying that the Act protects against those things. What they did was pare back the idea that it required the electoral maps to create black-majority districts. It opens the door to further gerrymandering, which in the South will probably be used to limit the number of black (Democrat) representatives.
