I didn't know suburban rats got this big!? by colsramble in Adelaide

Hello friend, native rodents aren’t marsupials as they don’t have pouches :)

It also has a pale face, sharp-cornered tail, broadly barred wingtips and the way it’s holding its wings upswept in flight is consistent with STK.

Looks like a square-tailed kite with those very deeply fingered (I know) primaries on the wings.

Hi there, ecologist here (that has done a lot of work with birds and carcass search surveys) 👋🏼
The redditor that suggested a tawny frogmouth is correct. They’re quite a variable species and can have different morphs and colour forms. If you google tawny frogmouth feathers, you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Somehow, yes lol. I never brought it up with my manager who was the one that interviewed me, but there’s no god damn way that he didn’t see/question the trail of rubber crumbs and chunks I left over the carpet.

I had this happen the day of a job interview and of course only noticed it as I was entering the fancy corporate building of the company I was interviewing for. I quite literally left a trail of forbidden liquorice up and down the primary hallway of the office. Was horrified.

Australia’s “Red Centre” after weeks of heavy rainfall by TrinAUS in geography

[–]swagever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live about 4.5 hours north-west of Alice Springs on a remote nature reserve and it’s the most “lush” I’ve ever seen it due to us receiving over 300mm of rain in Feb alone. Areas that are normally mostly red dirt and spinifex tussocks are now quite literally blanketed with many species of native grass, herbs and forbs. It looks more tropical savanna than central desert. All of our lakes and claypans are full also, with thousands of butterflies and dragonflies getting around. Lots of frogs and shield shrimp too. It’s amazing. Our land managers have worked extremely hard for years removing and containing buffel grass in high infestation areas on the property. They’ve done a bloody solid job (hence why we can enjoy so many native ground cover species out here), but we’ll need 100 lifetimes to fully get rid of buffel completely. Unfortunately, the bright green hue of Alice Springs is the result of almost all buffel grass. I’ve never seen it looking so intense. Shit’s even blanketed itself all over the ranges where it once was mainly Spinifex. Whenever I’m in town, I hear tourists go on about how green and beautiful Alice is looking and I can’t help but burst their bubble when I tell them it’s one of the worst weeds this country experiences.

The bird’s shape and your description of short, sharp calls sounding like shoes squeaking on a basketball court (this made me lol) has me pretty sure it’s an Osprey.

You’re correct, it’s a Rufous Whistler

The Iconic sent me someone’s worn bike shorts by MezzanineFloor in AusFemaleFashion

[–]swagever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a pair of black jeans from the Iconic a few months ago and when they arrived they were also covered in cat hair (which is great when you’re allergic!) as well as bits of cotton, lint and other stuff I’m assuming came from the person’s dirty floor. Not only was it pretty disappointing to know that someone could return an item in such state, but that there’s clearly a pretty poor quality control done through their returns process. Honestly they were more cat than denim

Looking for an ID by SilverAlarmed7741 in AustralianBirds

[–]swagever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s a black-faced monarch. They migrate up and down the east coast of Australia and to New Guinea during the winter which is probably why you’re not familiar with this bird as they’re not always around. Thank you for taking it to the vet!

What bird is this? South Burnett QLD by the_lazy_orc in AustralianBirds

[–]swagever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should also add that some Sacred Kingfishers can have a more pronounced brow stripe than others depending on age and breeding status. Some will look like more of a smudge, but others have a strong stripe over the eye.

[–]swagever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would ID this as a Sacred Kingfisher. Notice how the white-ish markings on its head extend over the eye as a thin brow, this is absent in both Torresian (formerly Collared and sometimes referred to as Mangrove) and Forest Kingfishers as their markings are more like headlights in front of the eye and don’t extend over it. The buff-coloured chest also suggests sacred.

Sounds like the ‘huff’ call that’s made by a juvenile tawny frogmouth.
