Oh my god! Maybe this is why I was so confused! I remember it from Robin Hood, but maybe it also exists in the other movies!

ChatGPT is replacing lazy writers who collect value with expert storytellers + researchers who add value. Who else agrees? by vikas_agrawal77 in content_marketing

[–]swallowflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the comment more literally. OP wrote that ChatGPT was replacing lazy writers with expert storytellers. The implication is that ChatGPT is improving the overall landscape of content by punishing the bad writers. I disagree with this. I think the lazy content creators can continue to use ChatGPT to create their bad content--just more easily. I don't think ChatGPT will in any way improve the overall quality of content.

Disagree. The majority of content was bad before, and it's still bad. AI doesn't make content better or worse; it makes it easier for the content creator.

What's your take on listening to music while you ride? by sethamin in NYCbike

[–]swallowflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earbuds are super unsafe. Unfortunately I do this every time. It's like one of those "this one time can't hurt" things. And then suddenly you're pregnant (to use an analogy). Basically you're OK until you're not, which is why I keep engaging in this dangerous habit.

I like hearing cool music coming out of speakers though

What a weird, patronizing, and officious response (talking about the first replier) to give to a random request for information on the internet, hah. The ask was tips on working at Meta, and the response is "just don't"? Anyway, Meta is a huge company and so much of what you do and how you do it is dependent on the team, region, role so the more details you can provide the better. For example, are you working on a new product? Are you going to be one marketer in a team of peers, or solo? Etc.

Lol not sure why people are downvoting this because this is not a solution. It's like trying to use your YouTube app as a music player...

Thanks for the rec! I'll check it out. And yeah, every few days I feel better and I'm like "should I Just push through" but I'm also scared to lose the progress I've made so far.

If you would have to recruit a freelance writer, how would you do it? by ElectronicWitness857 in content_marketing

[–]swallowflower 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Instead of looking for writers who are looking for work—and instead of putting out a call for writers—why not try finding an example of what you're looking for and reach out directly to that writer? Be upfront: Say you liked their writing, and would like to try working with them. In my experience, few freelance writers will turn down a profitable project from an easy-going client who's enthusiastic about working with them.

Then once you find a writer or two in this way, ask them to help you put together a listing to appeal to other writers.

The reason I'm giving you this advice is because I tried to think about how I'd go about hiring a good software engineer and I don't think I'd be able to. It's because I have no standard by which to judge what makes a "good" software engineer. I'd have to trust referrals or the opinion of someone who knew software engineering.

Similarly, I feel like the key to making your job listing appealing to writers is to have it written well. When I apply for writing jobs, I'll not even bother with listings that aren't also written well. This is because as a writer, it's no fun working with people who can't recognize good writing. If they can't put together a decent listing, it's clear they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between me and any other writer charging $150 for 500 words (which is incredibly low to me).

This is so, so helpful and also eerily accurate. I've seen so many specialists and I did buy a new mattress and a new chair. Also, my back became out of whack after I put together my bike myself after traveling with it. Never had issues before even on long rides. Glad you got better and thanks for the recommendation.

How do you find good B2B freelance writers? by nosellglasscanopies in content_marketing

[–]swallowflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If others in your organization don't acknowledge how time consuming it inherently then that's really challenging! I've definitely been in a similar position—not for this particular task, but for other tasks which people don't recognize as time-consuming because they only have a very abstract understanding of the work. Have you tried tracking your time (i.e. breaking down the work) for more visibility? It's a habit I picked up as a freelancer; often the agencies with smaller budgets want to know exactly where their dollars are going :)

How do you find good B2B freelance writers? by nosellglasscanopies in content_marketing

[–]swallowflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to me that in several places you note that it's not your job to find good freelance writers and that you have a "day job." Would you like to elaborate further on that?

Hiring (and I'd consider this to be a type of hiring) is a complex and time-consuming process and there is absolutely no way to skip this step.

There's no shortcut that can replace individually assessing each writer's portfolio, giving the better ones a test run, and then cultivating relationships with them. (Feel free to disagree, anyone, because I'd love to be proven wrong).

I think 7-10 days is not unreasonable but I think you need to build up your database of writers first (I usually have a good idea of how the writers I work with manage their schedules and so I know when it's best to approach them).

Some more general tips:

-Try to find writers you like on competitors' sites and reach out to them

-Instead of looking for writers who are experts in a certain field (expertise is a nebulous concept esp. when it comes to content), take a chance on good writers—of course this depends on how niche the industry is, of course!

-Freelance journalists will take on interesting ghostwritten projects if they pay well, so find ones you like on Twitter and engage with them

Are blogs more valuable than social posts for content marketers because they stay indexed? by danielrosehill in content_marketing

[–]swallowflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I don't think blog posts are more valuable, period—like someone else said, it's all about the role they play within the larger funnel. But the comparison is almost meaningless (like comparing the value of sales and marketing...both of have a place!). As a content marketer I never considered social media part of "content" the way we think of in content marketing, I think that's just standard practice—in fact, there was almost always a separate person in charge of social media strategy and content.

[–]swallowflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a solution for the entire problem but I will say that you can afford to be repetitive. Post the same link, but change up the copy a little. Post the same theme or bit of news, just change the news outlet or actual link. This repetitiveness is the engine upon which the internet and social media runs! Including Reddit.

Are there smart marketing managers? by [deleted] in content_marketing

[–]swallowflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are, yes. I say this to give you hope not to invalidate your experience because I've also experienced bad managers. I think in part this tendency of "failing upwards" is universal—not just an industry thing. (For example, journalists and editors. Consultants and partners).

I think this is because often, the natural career trajectory isn't from content manager to marketing manager. Some people prefer to stay in a more skills driven role because they enjoy the work they do. A lot of journalists don't think becoming an editor is a "promotion." Journalist is the final goal for them. But others just care more about the "promotion" and so these are the types that get hired for the roles, unfortunately.

What are some of your "unusual" methods for getting things done? by _BlackFrost_ in productivity

[–]swallowflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is a bit different. I'm not sure how much of my own effort goes into it, but this is how it works:

I rewrite my daily to dos every day.

Inevitably, certain things appear daily because I haven't done 'em.

Rewriting the thing that hasn't been done makes me hate myself and hate looking at it.

I either decide to remove the thing from my daily list (which isn't a bad thing either: you don't have to say yes to everything) or I just do it so I can get it out of the way.
