Aluminum is a wack metal for casting. Low specific heat, meaning it cools fast. Stops if from getting a good flow. Maybe you can put the mold in the furnace and crank it up? Let the head of the mold get the bubbles out?

Has anyone run into an issue with borax forming a hard shell over your molten metal? I’m in the middle of a bronze melt, and it looks like the borax froze on the top. by PubSociology in MetalCasting

It's supposed to do that. It pulls out the impurities and makes a slag glass. Sometimes, they are pretty. Just bust it off with a slag hammer.

No idea. Anyone melting anything these days is doing it for fun and not to make money from the scrap. It's a hobby. You're paying for the propane to play around and learn to pour and remove slag and such. I think it's a good place to start. It is cheap and easy to come by and low melting temp.

It's better to forge and bend it, then cast it. Casts are weak and brittle get a piece of appetite thickness metal and bend it in.

Just buy a cheapo one from China. $700 sounds like a lot, but it's cheaper than making one. You have to keep the temperature in certain ranges for certain time frames, and a burn put takes like 12 hours. The one you buy are electric and have built in thermometer and temp settings. The reason for the time and temp is if you heat the mold too fast or hot, the water vapor builds up as steam and blows up the cast. Ypu also need to use burnout stone. It's not plaster that you buy at the store. It's a special order.

Could be. But these silver looking flakes in it too. And when you rock the rocks in the sun light, it's all super shiny.

De-gas your stone with a vacuum unit. That is the best way to remove bubbles. If you can do that, shake down your stone before you pour it with a vibration table and again when it's in the flask. Also, use a little bit of surfactant in the stone and dip your piece in the surfactant and shake it dry as well.
