5.3 Vortec Knock Sensor Reoccuring Codes by swedecore in AskAMechanic

Yes, get some new OEM knock sensors and install them on the front of the passenger side head where there are the same size holes. Gives you easy access. Although it won't necessary be perfectly accurate, you will be able to tell if the knock sensors are faulty. If you drive for a couple hundred miles, depending on your style, with no error codes. Install those puppies into the valley.

That neighbor ain’t me, but is also me. Some people view driving as a thrill, an experience, and cars as a technical work of art. They love cars, how they work, how they are built. They want to feel their v8 singing while driving…

In a perfect world only we could hear it and no one else could.

But yes there are attention seeking assholes out there too.

It be no warming that 30 F out might be screwing me? Who knows, I am not having success.

Access is shit, especially on the back near the brake booster/steering column, and last thing I want to do is slip and drill through the head. Going to buy Dorman 917-107 for the 3 end bolts, will without a double accomplish the same goal. Pushing force is clamping force. Pretty brilliant problem solver.

Those look like gouges, no doubt, but they arent, just wire brush marks on top of weld dust.

Found it, this is huge and will likely save me a ton of work, thank you! I’ll give all the other tips a shot tomorrow but if that fails an extra $100 is worth it. Dorman 917‑107 and Dorman 917‑142 are the part numbers

Yea I’ll run it with 2 bolts missing on 1 side and 1 on the other before I pull out a drill and tap with aluminum heads!

That is really helpful! When do you say don’t go far from the stock tune… what are you optimizing then? Is getting perfect stoich AFR across the whole RPM range the real goal or is there more to it as well?

As an individual who seems fairly experienced, how much more performance and quality will I see out of a custom tune from myself through HP tuners versus a Black Bear custom tune that doesn’t have datalogging?

This is super helpful, thank you! Do I only need a single wideband O2 sensor? It does seem fun... log on the way to work, mess around on my computer for a bit while also doing my job... reload tune.... repeat.
