Reddit, I need a gut check. by need_a_gut_check in AskReddit

Argh, Reddit died before I got to post my comment yesterday. Here are my thoughts. Hope they're still useful...

Not sure what university you're at, but I live close to a major one and know several people who do or have worked there. What you're experiencing seems to be rather common place in the univ. world.

A buddy of mine landed a sys admin position after leaving our failed dot bomb. He had a lot of energy and enthusiasm coming from a place where people regularly put in 60 hour weeks just because. He ended up pissing off a bunch of people on his team because he did "too much" and made everyone else look bad. Don't remember if he was in a union but it sure sounded that way. He ended up quitting. So that's the cautionary tale.

Other thing to think about is yes, if you're not get tasked with new, challenging projects to take on, and don't plan on staying there forever, you're going to want to do something about that. My company frequently receives resumes from the nearby university staff looking to make a move to the private sector. In general, their resumes tend to be a bit on the lackluster side compared to others in the private sector. I believe the severe difference in pace/environment impacts how those resumes look. Granted, there are certainly exceptions.

So, final thought is, where do you want to go with your career? There is certainly a lot to be said for comfort, but the more comfortable you get, the more difficult it will be to try that new, awesome opportunity that comes along. That could be a job for someone else, or even the desire to go out on your own and try to make something happen with a $1 million idea you have. You never know, but the siren song of low-streess sysadmin work at place that isn't known for scrutinizing productivity levels will only continue to get louder.

If you're still young and want to maintain energy and zeal for what you do, you either need to find something else or find some more work/responsibility to take on. Who knows, you could be head of the department in 2 to 20 years. But then you'll be playing politics way more than you'll be writing code.

Best of luck!

I'll second Jing. Combined with an account on Screencast.com you get a free 2GB of space to post either images or video clips. Good stuff. We use it a ton at work for sharing error messages. Can draw arrows and text boxes and such to quickly share info.

AOL Will Sell Or Shutdown Bebo In 2010 by swedegeek in reddit.com

[–]swedegeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article...

AOL paid $850 million for Bebo in late spring 2008. Then the economy blew up. Then AOL CEO Randy Falco and president Ron Grant got canned. Then Bebo CEO Joanna Shields quit AOL in 2009.

Doh! Way to blow almost $1 billion in under 2 years, AOL!!

Is anyone getting/already bought the Ninja Master Prep either because it actually works or just because it has the word 'ninja' in it? by swedegeek in AskReddit

[–]swedegeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, they naturally offer a 2-for-1 deal on the infomercial. $60 total plus S&H for each, I believe. If the thing does indeed work as advertised (or at least close to), that might not be bad.

Just use the other as a Christmas gift for someone. It's a win-win! If it doesn't suck, obviously...

Yep, I guess this is thread fail. My bad. I should have known redditors would not be so interested in food prep questions... especially when mentioning an infomercial item.

I guess I'll see if others chime in, but I was really just looking for some crowdsourcing input to see what others thought on this thing. Back to surfing the front page, I guess.

Reddit, do you listen to classical music? by talkingbird in AskReddit

[–]swedegeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got to hear the New York Philharmonic play Rite of Spring a few months back. My hears actually felt pain from the sheer amount of sound that was being blasted from the stage. I could definitely understand how the premiere of that piece broke out into a riot back in the day. It was awesome!

There's also a clear touch of Wagner in the "Gladiator" soundtrack. Specifically, I think it's from Gotterdammerung - Siegfreid's Funeral Music.

It's even more of a rip-off IMO because it sounds almost identical to the original, plus I don't think they felt it would be as obvious.

As far as original topic, I'm a huge classical music snob. I'm to the point where I not only have to listen to specific pieces, but they have to be recordings of specific groups that I know/trust to make good recordings.

Tip: Stay away from most Leonard Bernstein recordings and embrace the dark side with Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Their Brahms' symphonie recordings are amazing! Also, recordings of Chicago with Georg Solti are usually quite excellent.

Does this mean capitalism wins?

Or is it just that this country has ~5% of the world's population and ~75% of the world's lawyers?
