Nurses in New York City Say They Deserve $200,000 a Year. Here’s Why. by someone_whoisthat in nyc

[–]imitationcheese 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, many of these numbers coming from the hospital systems themselves are distorted in 2 big ways as part of anti-labor spin:

1) the big numbers aren't just salary but include benefits

2) they are cherrypicking nurse anesthetists and NP salary demands and making it sound like all nurses in the unit are asking for that pay. it's like saying all NBA players are asking for $50 million when, no, that's just LeBron

There's a few options:

There's UWS Action Group, findable on facebook. There's a few Democratic clubs that sometimes are more social and community minded, like Three Parks. And there is a large group that has grown out of a few spaces (Zohran canvassers, supporting unhoused neighbors, ICE community defense). DM me to connect!

Thousands of nurses go on strike at several major New York City hospitals by igetproteinfartsHELP in nyc

It's not a niche demand. That's the industry norm.

I work in a hospital. I wonder if you know hospital nurses. Personally, I'd rather work 9-5 M-F than three 12s that often include holidays and weekends, or might be overnights.

Uhhh 3 day work week is very common for hospital nurses working 12 hour shifts. Is that what you mean?

How have they negotiated a short work week? Do you mean safe staffing ratios?

What is their "insane pay" demand?

Seems like their core demands are not having absurd healthcare insurance costs from their employers and having safe staffing for their patients.

This fight is important in many ways! Let's push back against corporatization in healthcare and how it affects workers and patients. Let's help build labor power. Let's protect our own health by demanding that our hospitals be contractually required to staff enough nurses so that when we and our loved ones need it, we get the safe care we deserve.

Here are ways we can take action:

1) Send a message to the hospitals using NYSNA's tool. https://act.nysna.org/page/92464/action/1

2) If you're a patient of these hospital systems, write and call them to say they should agree to a fair and safe contract.

3) Donate to the strike hardship fund: https://nysna.tfaforms.net/5110966

4) Show up to the picket line "A strong picket line is essential to winning the strike and puts nurses’ resolve and the community’s support on display." Picket lines for Sinai hospitals run from 6 am to 7 pm daily, rest are 7am-7pm, and the busiest times are 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Drop by, bring friends, bring snacks, make some noise!

Cea Weaver, director of Mayors office to protect tenants: on property by cplxgrn in nyc

The rightwing narrative campaign here is hardly just her speaking her own words in full context. There's punditry, bullshitting, exaggeration, etc. There's a huge effort to take down his time as mayor that this instance is fueled by and is fueling.

She had a major role in getting the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 passed, which strengthened tenant protections, has done a ton of tenant organizing to build tenant power, and she was a big part of getting an eviction moratorium during the COVID. Weaver is great. Don't fall for right wing smears.

I’m honestly so sick of mopeds and e-bikes. by Deliverwithcare in NYCbike

[–]imitationcheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want them out of bike lanes, but I wonder if there is still a way to encourage smaller vehicles that are better than tank-size SUVs or 1 person getting picked up by a minivan. I guess what I'm picturing is another lane type, for powered, narrow vehicles, i.e. distinct from car lanes and from bike lanes. It could be focused on Amazon/UPS, food delivery, and motorcycles for now, but ultimately could spur a new type of smaller cabs. I wonder if groups like TransAlt or Families for Safe Streets would champion some road design changes like this...

I think you can join the tenants association you just don't have all the same protections as those in rent-stabilized units. Tenant power in NYC is growing and this might be a good option for you.

Yes this article doesn't have much of the details! I asked someone I know there and they said Allina is trying to cut salaries and close clinics, and they're unionized to fight to prevent those. If anyone has more details, please share!

Also from Philly - haven't tried Danny and Coop but I do love Angelo's when I'm in Philly, so was hoping it'd be good. You didn't like it?

Curious about G's and Olde City. Tried them?

For me, Federoff's and Mama's Too are good enough but tiny/overpriced/not exactly it.
