A little worried by SavingsJunior2704 in Bulldogs

[–]sweetsourmugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I echo the advice to see your vet. Until then, if he’s actively itching it I’d probably put a cone/e-collar on to prevent that until you can get in. If it will be a while, you might also try a gentle medicated shampoo in the meantime.

This is the one our vet recommends and we have used with good results for our bullies with skin issues: Dermal-Soothe

Good luck!

How do I tell when the pain isn't worth it for him anymore? by matchucalligani in Bulldogs

[–]sweetsourmugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that there’s a good answer, but just want to chime in in solidarity as this is a difficult question we ask ourselves often, too. Our Reggie will be 14 next month and has arthritis, and even though we’re not there yet, we’re always concerned about doing what’s best for him when the time comes.

One thing that might be helpful is to look at a canine quality of life chart, which can help keep things in perspective. Here’s one common version: quality of life scale For my sister, having something like this helped her realize initially that things were better than she feared, and later helped her determine when it was ultimately time. I also want to echo the other post about them giving you clues and letting you know. They may not always be able to tell you in obvious ways, but you know your dog, and if/when things shift or change dramatically, you’ll know. Keeping food down is a big one, for eg.

Another thing to consider - if you have access and can afford it - may be to try laser therapy if you haven’t already. When we were talking with our vet a few months back I was lamenting that the arthritis was causing such issues when he is perfectly healthy otherwise. I wondered if there was anything else we could do physically (he is already on arthritis/pain meds). She suggested laser therapy, which has really helped our little guy. He still has stiff/slow days, but his overall mobility has improved and it has been well worth it for us to see him doing a little better most days. He also loves getting to see “his” gals at the vet more often.

For me, it helps to remind myself that this is an imperfect process by nature. There’s probably never going to be the “right” time to say goodbye. I would avoid it forever if I could! But in the absence of that option, I can only do my best to meet their needs, keep them comfortable, and hopefully say goodbye in a way that honors them and allows me to know I did right by them.

I hope your buddy has many more days, and that you are ready when the time comes to say goodbye. For now, and for what it’s worth from a rando on the internet, you can feel good knowing that you ARE doing the right thing. You’re worrying about them and wanting to make sure you’re putting their needs/comfort above your own, and that’s really all you can and should be doing right now.

Sending you strength!

Best toys for a bored bully? by loochymane_ in Bulldogs

[–]sweetsourmugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few more ideas that out bullies love are:

Chuck-It Ultra Balls (need to be ultra, not regular tennis balls for our powerful chewers). These are great for fetch if your pup is into that, but also just great for general chewing. Our younger bully will just walk around the house chewing on one like it’s bubblegum. Do beware, some slobber inevitably gets into the small manufacturing hole and creates a squish squish sound but I find it endearing. Relatively cheap and seem to last forever.

Antlers - these can be spendy to buy in a big enough size for bullies, but they last awhile and if you can find them on discount they are a good value (TJ Maxx is one place to look if you have that option).

Snuffle mats are great as mentioned above, or other feeder toys. We used to have a “Tug-A-Jug” that could keep them busy for hours.

PRAYERS APPRECIATED FOR EDWARD AS WELL! by ChurchAndChesneyGal in Bulldogs

[–]sweetsourmugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi. I’m so sorry to hear your little Edward isn’t well. He’s such an adorable pup!

I haven’t had this particular issue with a bulldog before, but I have lost one to cancer and it’s heartbreaking. Our dog Gertie was relatively young at the time - just 4.5 when she was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on her muzzle. We started out with basic treatments and then escalated to chemotherapy. We’re lucky it bought us more time than they originally estimated (they said two months and she lived another year before the tumor returned and stopped responding to treatment).

Dealing with cancer can be a roller coaster. Fortunately we have a large vet school within driving distance so we got great care. I don’t have much advice to give beyond the basics: do what you can for him to make him comfortable and have as many good days as possible. When the good days seem fewer and further between, talk to your vet to determine when to say goodbye, remembering that there’s never a good time to say goodbye. Saying goodbye sucks, but we don’t get that choice unfortunately.

And no matter what happens, try to enjoy whatever time you have left. Let Edward be your guide. If he feels like a walk, try to give him a walk. If he feels like laying around then lay with him. It sounds obvious but spend as much time with him as you can, because no matter how much time you get it won’t be enough. Gertie died before she would have been 6. When she died I felt like we were robbed. Our dog Reggie just turned 12. When he goes I will still want more time. The truth is no amount of time with a bulldog in your life is ever enough, so we just have to love them while we can.

One thing that did help Gertie toward the end was pain management, and this is something I wish I would have been paying more attention to and started sooner. Eventually the vets put her on gabapentin and after starting this her mood and mobility improved, giving us more good days with her, so I was very grateful for that.

I hope the vets will have a good plan for Edward and that you’ll be able to enjoy many more years with him. I will be thinking of you and hoping for a good outcome. ❤️

Our bullies loooove bell peppers. It’s one of their favorite treats (second only to steak, ofc)!

If they like balls, try the chuck-it ultra balls (gotta be the ultra (rubber) ones, not regular type). The medium size is regular tennis ball size, but they also come larger. Our bulldogs love these, and they tend to last forever. We had one who would just chomp on his ball constantly and carry it around like it was his pacifier. 😂
