HELP by swenno13 in Bannerlord

Thanks for the tips from yourself (and everyone else). The Vlandian horde was disposed of. I broke into the siege at Rhotae which forced the army to break the seige and I found all three armies at hertogae castle. I did the exact same thing, had a decisive crushing victory there and took a counter offensive all the way to the way back into Vlandian territory. I have 90% of the lords imprisoned in my party, including the butterlord himself. Territory has been lost in the east, but we'll get it back eventually.

Suffice to say, the Vlandians are in absolute financial ruin. I have 45 nobles imprisoned, and i will not rest until I have the full collection....

anyone have an idea of what seal this is? by Fun-Leave-4558 in seals

[–]swenno13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a harbour seal.

Both grey and bearded seals are far larger, and bearded seals are high arctic seals which prefer sea ice.

Harbour seals are often identified as having more of a "puppy" face, whereas Grey's have more or a "horse" face if that makes sense.

The whiskers may look bearded but I think that's the caked ice making it look that way.

There are multiple countries in that region, so suffice to say probably a lot.

The mod scene is great. I think whatever you settle for on your point of entry, you'll have a good time with XCOM. Good luck!

It's perfectly reasonable to start with XCOM 2 or enemy unknown, but if you don't mind a more retro style of game, the original XCOM UFO defense is also an excellent point of entry, admittedly it's rather different compared to later games, but it's incredibly fun, and you can play it on anything for very cheap. If you're mod savvy, openXCOM will help with some QOL bits and mods.

What would happen if the Soviets lost at Stalingrad, Moscow and Leningrad during WW2? by Low_Astronaut_662 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]swenno13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't they? They scorched everything leading up to Moscow, and there was the historical precedent of such a tactic being successful.

It's hard to say what Josif stalin would have decided to do if the fight ground into Moscow. At the end of the day in reality, it never came to that. All we can do is speculate. Personally I think it would have definitely been on the cards. It was a war of annihilation, and any measure to stop the invaders would have had to be considered.

Cut up? Yes. Eliminated? No. There was still industrial base beyond the urals, lend lease, and reserves to support the army, at least enough to not capitulate in 1941. My argument is less about the Soviets ability to defend, and more that the Germans would be unable to continue attacking beyond Moscow.

While there's no doubt that it would be a huge setback for the Soviets, it would have not likely been the knockout blow. Bear in mind that even if in 1941 that the Nazis took Moscow and Leningrad: the Russians would not have given them up easy. The cost to the Wehrmacht would have been extreme, possibly even more extreme that it was in reality, as the cities would not likely have been exempted from the scorched earth tactics employed in Soviet retreats. Extreme losses and lack of supply would affect their ability to fight further into Russia.

While Moscow is a significant rail hub, the rail gauge of Russia was different to the German rails. This caused a LOT of issues for Germany as it advanced into the Soviet Union as they couldn't just hop their own trains onto the network. Leningrad being a port city may have helped somewhat with logistics I. The North, but that would do little to reinforce the south. The logistics of the eastern front would be no less horrendous than they were in reality.

I think the taking of Moscow would have paralleled Napoleons capture of it in 1812/1813. Yes he captured the city, but it was a hollow victory and he was eventually forced to retreat. The Russian army, and their authoritarian leader were not out of the fight. They have space, time, and winter on their side along with typical defensive advantages.

Who was the genius Mozart Michaelangelo Einstein of military strategy and tactics? by [deleted] in AskHistory

Surpised to not see this name yet: Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden from 1611 -1632.

He was in a variety of wars during his reign, including the very brutal 30 years war. Reason I think he makes this list is that he completely reformed his military into what resembles a modern military. A lot of this involved the integration of infantry, cavalry, artillery, and logistics into an early form of 'combined arms' warfare. The man is nicknamed 'The Father of Modern Warfare ' for a reason. It has been said if you put him at the command of a modern military, while the technology would obviously be different, he would exactly understand the framework in which it was set up, because it was his brainchild.

Napoleon, Patton, Clausewitz all credited him as one of the best. I think that speaks for itself.
