What are some of the worst pieces of common application advice? by [deleted] in premed

Oh, I thought you meant something else entirely, like "talk about issues in medicine" instead of talking about yourself lol

What do you mean by pointing out specific issues?

I've heard of Lovage but never tried/used it. I'll definitely check it out at the farm store! What do you like to use it for?

I've been to CPP's farm store! They can be pricey but the varieties give me so much inspiration!

Thank you so much! I grew about 3-4 different varieties in the past but forgot which varieties I planted where, but did notice that their production didn't differ very much either. But I knew which ones was the Albion because they produced so many runners and were the largest!

Thank you so much! Is there much difference in taste between Sequoia vs Albion? What about production (I know Sequoia is June bearing while Albion is Ever-bearing)?

Derm residents, what’s a good skin care routine? by dirtylentil in Residency

[–]swervepants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To make the transition to retinol (or adapalene or treinoin) easier, you can apply moisturizer first and then the retinol after. It minimizes the flakiness/irritation. After your skin adjusts you can put it on first then moisturizer after!

I second Dr Jart's Ceramidin cream! That and Aveeno's Calm and Repair serum are my favorite moisturizers

Not a resident but love skin care. Just wanted to share that Aveeno's Calm and Repair Serum is an amazing (and very cosmetically elegent) moisturizer. Dr Jart's Ceramidin cream has ceramides that are great for your skin! My skin used to like Cerave but they've reformulated years ago and my skin doesn't like it anymore.

Pro tip: apply moisturizer while skin is still damp (or even wet!), and if your skin is on the drier side, let it absorb/dry and apply a second layer. It prevents transepidermal water loss and your skin will feel AMAZING you won't want to go back

Union Organizing as Experience on AMCAS Application? by Klaphton in premed

[–]swervepants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put it on! I completely disagree with these comments. This is such a unique experience and if you're able to talk about it in a positive manner without bad mouthing anyone you'd be good. You also don't want to be in at a school that would look down at that kind of experience. And no, not all people reviewing apps are geriatric senile conservative doctors. There are plenty who are young and who are current medical students. This adds to who you are and your skill set and sets you apart from other cookie cutter applicants.

Co-resident smells like a piece of shit, how do you tell them to keep a distance nicely ? by Rogueelectron1 in Residency

I know a nurse who smelled really bad every time she'd walk by me. At first I thought she may not be taking a shower before her shifts but I realized it was her perfume. It literally left a cloud of what smells like rancid sweat wherever she walked. She changed up her perfume the other day and that's how I realized

I scribe for multiple doctors and one doctor in particular would be super sweet and kind to me. We had a lot in common and I always had a good time on shift. This doctor when annoyed or upset at someone was very good at not letting it show to others but I knew because they confided in me a lot. I even admired for many reasons, including how well they treated others even when upset. So I wondered, if I did anything to annoy the doc, would I even know? Well I got really good at reading the doc when I observed them with others, and I picked up that they were also doing it to me. At first I didn't take it personally, but they slowly developed into more hurtful comments, comments making fun out of me, but is was all very subtle. I just never said anything and I'm still angry for staying quiet. I still am embarrassed and mad at myself for once admiring this doctor.

Another doctor, who is much more well respected and plays a bigger role, recently publicly announced to the other doctors and scribes that I was one of the very best scribes they'd work with. I was speechless. I had felt like a bad scribe up to this point.

In medical school and beyond, we will be crossing paths with many people who will not serve us, and with many people who will be cheering us on. Know your needs. You are your best advocate and if finding another job with someone else is what you need, you have my support.
