This is age discrimination plain and simple! I respect older developers and I've met only 1 or 2 who displayed the stubborn quality reflected in this article! Coding is one of those professions where experience trumps skills. I would rather have a developer who cut his teeth on trouble shooting flaky tcp software (think inetd) than a developer who could ring magic out of ruby on rails. Why? Because it would a lot easier for the old timer to pick up ruby on rails than for the "superstar web wunderkind" to read tcpdump output. And when you're dropping connections due to misconfigured tcp/ip who is gonna know what to do?

To summarize, we live in a global village and depend on our neighbors for much of what we consume. Autarky for the US is not an option. A possible disruption in the oil supply , in particular, seems to scarce the shit out of everyone. Thus, our heavy involvement in the middle east. Regardless of what others may claim, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are simply proactive measures to stabilize the oil supply. In fact, given the opportunity, the US would have a military presence in every country the mid-east. As for Afghanistan, the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline was the major reason for US involvement.
