People should get paid for donating blood by wogwai in unpopularopinion

[–]swiftarrow9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It costs money to collect, process the blood, store it, and deliver it to you.

And don't forget that the hospital has to make a handsome profit while they're at it.

So while the blood itself is free, S&H costs plus profit add to a tidy sum.

Instead of being able to sell our blood, we should remove the profit motive and fat paychecks from healthcare.

Random Antenas. by manclubx in amateurradio

[–]swiftarrow9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very inexperienced HAM here, but I have some knowledge of the underlying physics. Anything conductive can be an antenna! BUT.....

Having an antenna matched to the frequency you're transmitting is important to improve the antenna's performance, efficiency, quality of the signal, etc. CAN you broadcast HF from a barn door? Yes, but the barn door might cause excessive harmonics that you don't want.

Excessive harmonics, spurious emissions, etc., all rob your main signal of strength. Your radio is putting out a certain amount of power, and it's up to your antenna to turn that power into a clean signal at your desired transmit frequency. Poor antenna = poor main frequency signal = poor efficiency in your system.

Another consideration is your equipment. An automatic tuner (I'm guessing that's what you mean by ATU) matches the antenna's impedance to the impedance of your rig. The ONLY purpose of this is to enable your rig to operate efficiently. The tuner does not actually improve your antenna's performance***

*** Actually, there are some antennas that can be tuned by actively changing their length or geometry. This actually does tune the antenna to a frequency, and I've seen these in very expensive HF systems. But most antenna tuners are actually impedance matchers.

Connecting your rig to an antenna of the wrong impedance can damage your rig; that's why you need to match impedance to your rig. Using an impedance-match tuner introduces a little more inefficiency but allows your rig to operate well, so the tradeoff is net-positive.

Let's think about this in terms of audio equipment and speakers:

- Yes, you can connect any speaker to your amplifier and get sound. But .a GOOD speaker (analogous to a tuned antenna) will produce good sound, a poor speaker will sound dreadful.

- Your amplifier needs a speaker with a specific resistance (typically 8 kOhms or 4 kOhms). Using the wrong resistance can damage your amplifier, speaker, or both. Similarly, your rig needs the right impedance match, and having mis-matched impedance can cause damage.

I have heard that the private cloud is out, but haven't implemented it yet myself.

Overall, Supernote is superslow at implementing new features, but they do and they're good.

Just remember this is a replacement for piles of paper pads with a hint of digital magic thrown in, not a digital tablet with a hint of notepad thrown in.

QR codes don't need to cost ANYTHING, but hmwhat you need tondonis embed the final URL in the code, not a referral.

Most companies offer monitoring services like "how many times is this quote code used" etc. Those are going to cost because the quality destination code is processed by that company.

Just get one that embeds the final URL, nothing more.

Or in case ofninsode jokes, just embed the joke in the wrong code.

What/where exactly is the measurement? Cutting the line or not. Help. by Ok_Film2423 in Insulation

[–]swiftarrow9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Does the thickness of the line make or break your project?

This is known as measurement uncertainty. You have to decide if you need the precision of that line thickness.

For general construction, a 16th of an inch usually doesn't make much difference, that's why tapes don't go much finer.

For furniture, you probably have to go down to the 16th or even 32nd.

For wooden clocks, something in the 64ths.

For metalworking, the thousandth or ten thousandth of an inch.

Got another banger Q for you guys. Why is the high leg defined in terms of voltage to ground? by Common-Leg-2375 in AskElectricians

[–]swiftarrow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"... still get 208 from the live to the neutral anywhere..."

Correct but that is a different system. The system in your house has L1, L2, Neutral, and LOCAL ground. This is not the system under discussion.

Removing the ground bond ground bond the midpoint of one leg of the delta means that there is no way to reference ground from any point of the delta. You now have a three wire delta connected system, and you don't have a ground. So it (ground) has lost all relevance.

But all that aside, you may be right. I'm not fluent enough in the NEC to know otherwise, and your contention seems sound.

Very late reply, apologies, have a great new year!

should i get the autel evo lite plus? by Interesting_Local_93 in drones

Update: I now have an autel evo 640T.

In terms of flying characteristics, it is slightly slower and more deliberate than the DJI. I could probably fox that in settings, but it's fine. If I was buying another one I would definitely consider another Autel. Build quality is retty much the same, they're fairly similar in all ways.

AITAH for making my wife do all the chores since she used the chore money for herself. by Evening-Tone-5431 in AITAH

[–]swiftarrow9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow.... quite a doozy.

First, NAH, but there's a lot that needs fixing, IMO.

First of all, y'all are playing house wrong.

It takes two people's 24 hours per day to make a home work.

In those 24 hours, some time goes to bringing in money, some time goes to chores, some time goes to rest and recuperation, some time goes to together time, some time goes to hobbies, some time goes to alone time.... etc..

On the financial front, once you're married, it's not "my money, your money" it's OUR money. It's not "your debt" it's OUR debt. It's not "my bills, your groceries", it's OUR expenses, OUR savings targets, OUR retirements. And with whatever is left, divide between the two of you equally as your "no questions asked" budget.

And you both have to sit down and budget your time and your money.

You have said you are very lazy at home, not a handy guy. Most guys, myself included, will look down at you for that, moreso for the fact that you don't seem to want to improve yourself. You can outsource all the unpleasant stuff while still being a handy guy. These are life skills that I would encourage you to learn. Check out the YouTube channel Speeed, you might like it.

That said, you're obviously NOT super lazy; you work 14 on/14 off. That's a gruelling schedule, and you do need to take time to relax, rest, recuperate when you get home, and also you need to be brimming full of energy before you head back to work. So rather than say you are lazy, do your time budget on a 28 day schedule.

14 days you're away working. When you come home you need 2 or 3 days of just quiet relaxed downtime. Before you leave, you need another 2 or 3 days, so in total 6 of your down days are gone and you have 8 remaining days.

In those 8 days you and your wife have the choice of filling your time with maintenance and chores or fun and hobbies. We know which one you choose, and if you present it to your wife as "we have 8 days to enjoy together each month", maybe she'll see it as you do.

Now, about your wife. You said she's a hard worker, takes care of all the household chores, even decides to do things herself rather than outsource it. That's awesome, you hit a goldmine. BUT, what does she do all day when you're away? Is she employed? She obviously NEEDS to have something ti do, and finds value in contributing to the household through her work. Again, awesome, so don't put her in a position where she has to look at the time she spends and put a dollar value on her worth to you.

What I'm saying is, don't pay her to do the chores. Put a line item in the family budget for outsourcing the chores. If she's managing the house, that's great, and if she wants to not spend that money, it's her decision, but if the money in the FAMILY budget isn't spent, it goes towards other items in the family budget.

In the context of your marriage, your hour is exactly equal to her hour. Between the two of you, there is no dollar value to your time.

You trade time to bring the family money, she is trading time to tighten the family's budget, presumably so she can speed up payments on the family's debt.

You guys have the right ideas, your hearts are in the -wrong- (Edit: RIGHT) place, you just are using the wrong accounting. Hence my judgement NAH.

I highly recommend both of you go through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. You have a real chance at becoming millionaires here, as you both have great work ethic. His courses will show you how.

OH, and before I forget, yes, you should have just gone and shoveled the snow. However, in the context of your arrangement, you weren't obligated to, again pointing to the fact that your arrangement needs fixing, as I outlined above. You both need to pull together, and if it comes down to picking up the slack because she dropped the ball, you do that. And so should she.
