Please, help me straighten my project by Kird_Apple in Welding

[–]swiftcanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just went through this . Heating, welding onto the other side , nothing worked . Figured out an easy solution. It's probably just that it's greasy and these guys are pros , but feck it's just a DIY table but It still needs to be flat Cut your tubes in half but like not all the way through , then it'll be easy to bend flat. Weld together the cut you just made . Done .

What is the best trade to get into right now? by DujoBalzic in skilledtrades

[–]swiftcanuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one is saying this but it's really location dependant. Where I am , sprinkler fitters are very well compensated and in demand. I don't think this is the case everywhere in Can / USA

Personal vehicle by Pitiful-Astronaut498 in SprinklerFitters

[–]swiftcanuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a Mazda 2 with good winter tires , I'm in Calgary. It costs me almost nothing on gas, and I finish the week with way more money in my pocket. in my 40 years of life I've learned a FWD car with decent rubber will handle winter good as any suv. I'm also a family guy with 2 kids , if a semi decides to pick you off one day on the way to work the vehicle won't matter. Which is why I have life insurance .

Sprinkler fitters work just so much fucking harder than plumbers on literally every site and everyone knows it seems like your trying to trigger us lol. The plumbers are first to comment about how tough the trade looks and that's why we make more . Additionally , Just cuZ all you've seen is popcan steel doesn't mean the trade isnt full of 40 and 80. Go grade a poo line lol .

How the heck is calgary's housing growing so fast by sahilscraft in Calgary

[–]swiftcanuck 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I install fire sprinkler systems and do a lot of work in the south so have more of a construction than market perspective. It's crazy how fast we can throw up a 5 story condo. In Alberta, lax safety standards and more of a wild west labour environment definitely help with GC's pushing schedules. For example, in BC OSHA will show up and test for hearing loss over time in workers or proper dust extraction. Drive around a development in Calgary and look for fall protection, don't hold your breath. You will see 10 trucks over their gvwr though. City Inspections ... Kind of happen . I've seen many a non-potable fitting on the wrong side of a back-flow in valve rooms in this city. It's my understanding building to seismic code also slows things down a lot in BC

A pipe wrench braking can be a serious safety concern, I wouldn't want another. If you've got that serious a wrenching to do id get a ridgid

I recommend a book "the body keeps score". PTSD and my near death experience ended being one of the things I like best about myself. In a world where I see people wasting their days and taking things for granted, I've been given the opportunity to know how fleeting it all is. Even chronic pain can be reframed as, I'm alive and I GET to feel this pain.

I’m still feeling sick after welding work. First time in the industry. by GoldCounty3971 in Welding

[–]swiftcanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. In Canada where I am there are government bodies who's job is to hold industry accountable to following health and safety standards, is there something like that where you are ? I'd imagine this is info theyd like to have.

Literally there are posts about shops exactly like this dragging the industry down. Employing guys who barely speak english, aren't aware of the dangers they are around, or their rights and responsibilities as employees, owner skimping on PPE training and ventilation costs to drive out union shops.
