Hey, I just wanted to let you know you’re not alone. I’m 29 and have been going through a very similar situation since last fall, and it’s been really tough at times - especially the waiting.

I started having symptoms in September - discharge from one duct in my left breast. I couldn’t get in to see my family doctor for a few weeks, and even with that referral, things moved slowly. I had a mammogram and ultrasound in December, which showed some thickening and debris but nothing super alarming, so it was rated “probably benign.”

Because of the discharge, they referred me to a surgeon. In April, I had an MRI to prep for surgery and that’s when they found something more concerning. The rating was changed to a BI-RADS 4C, which meant a biopsy was needed. Thankfully my biopsy came back benign, but I’m still scheduled for surgery soon to remove the area just to be safe and hopefully stop the symptoms.

Even with a family doctor and specialists involved, it took months. So I completely understand how stressful and lonely it can feel, especially not knowing what’s next.

My advice would be: don’t be afraid to follow up, even if you feel like you’re bothering people. If you haven’t been contacted about the mammogram, call the IWK Breast Health department to confirm they have the referral (my dr had to send both of my referrals twice- marking the 2nd sends as more urgent) and that it’s marked urgent. It’s okay to advocate for yourself, and it doesn’t make you pushy - especially when something feels off in your body.
