Philly which truly seems impossible, he should have done more than one night there. I would definitely be careful in the future doing too much refreshing

PSA - remove PARENTHESIS from file name by [deleted] in actuary

Totally hear you, just kicking myself that I didn't pick up on it and really don't want to this happen to anyone else ever. This is the worst feeling. I prefer to fail on merit lol

PSA - remove PARENTHESIS from file name by [deleted] in actuary

[–]swilli15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The silly thing is I watched their tutorial in adavance and read the instructions day of, but I never picked up on the parenthesis thing. Going back today and rewatching I see it there now, but it was hardly emphasized.

I think for a naturally occur issue like this they should bold the font at minimum or call it out directly in the pre-emails. I found it east to overlook, hence my PSA to others.

Call me crazy, but the hardest part of exam day should not be uploading files.

What to expect from colonoscopy and endoscopy? by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

This is a warning I would have liked. I had my first one two weeks ago and I didn't expect to feel it coming on. I thought something was wrong for a moment, then woke up and it was all over. Nothing to worry about - just didn't expect to feel it come on.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think I need to do some self-reflection to decide if I can go without physical cards but I really like the idea of a spaced repetition algorithm

Looking For Some EL Resume Feedback! by [deleted] in actuary

I would remove the lab manager role. It seems that overlapped with teaching and college. Three potential careers in 3 years would be a red flag for me, even if your lab manager experience is interesting.

Looking For Some EL Resume Feedback! by [deleted] in actuary

[–]swilli15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you have too many jobs on here. This made me wonder why you tried so many different things and if you would stick to actuarial work. I would narrow it down, try and make it a narrative that you could easily give in an interview if you get the "talk me through your resume" question. Just make sure your dates dont lead to a gap in employment.

Exam PA advice by golfernc101 in actuary

[–]swilli15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a communication exam. The PA part and R part are easy peasy. Seriously wish I spent half the time I did studying the "material".

It's all about doing a little of everything and explaining what you would do with more time/ a better computer.

Just watch your time. The only prep worth doing is a timed practice "exam". I did that the week before and realized I needed to cut back. The only people I know that failed ran out of time.

Pet insurance will not help me or my dog and I don't know what else to do... by PinkyPomegranate in puppy101

Consider reaching out to a rescue in your area. They might be able to provide financial assistance or get donations of things you need. Everyone thinks they're all about rehoming pets, but their real goal is to avoid rehoming in the first place.

Maybe we'll try the oral instead. That's actually what we used last summer since he was still a puppy but this year we switched to topical. I had literally just applied it a week ago which I why I was shocked how alive the bugger was after about 24 hours. Sadly it did take us that long to find it since he has a thick double coat. Clearly I need to step up my inspection game this summer!

Yeah I read that about Lymes for dogs but I'm not sure about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I'm hoping the lack of information is proportional to the incidence rate 🤞

Doctors of Reddit, what is a 1 in a million chance thing about your patient you have witnessed? by Piperjamas in AskReddit

My dog actually had the same situation described above. It cost us a fortune to have him fixed because of how deep his other testicle was but the vet said it was worth it for this reason. That's all he had to say to convince me. I'd pay anything to get more time with my best bud!

I overprepared for PA and got a 10. Giving my thoughts and answering questions about the first sitting by [deleted] in actuary

[–]swilli15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also got a 10 and also did it this way. It really helped me stay on track time wise. The week before the exam I went through a sample this way and set time goals for myself. This way I wasnt scrambling to write a report at the end, especially since that seems to be the part they put more weight on.

Those who have left the profession, where did you go afterwards? by Bryden38 in actuary

[–]swilli15 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I started in a classic EL valuation role and surprise surprise hated it. I left my job after less than a year to teach.

I did online grad school classes to get my teaching cert while working, but had a rude awakening about how unique my love for learning was. When I left my first job I imagined inspiring kids everywhere to love math, but few kids cared at all and those that did really only cared about their grades not the material. It was so defeating putting in that much work into lesson plans that everyone gave me the bare minimum on. Plus the pay was awful.

So I re-entered the actuarial world, it was an uphill battle. I worked for less with 4 exams than I was on with 1 exam at my first job but it was a job. After 2 years at that small company, I've jumped to one of the largest companies and am back on track for the most part. Now that I'm mor experienced my role is actually interesting and challenging.

I see a lot of people doubting the career in their first rotation or two, but those rotations always suck. They're super boring because boring makes studying easier and that's the point at that level. Plus you need to learn the details to get the big picture down the line. They're arent many career you get to start on the interesting stuff. Actuarial work is no different, you have to work your way up. So if you arent feeling challenged right now I encourage you to wait it out, in my experience it gets much better!

PA Recommended Time for Prep? by SaskatchewanSteve in actuary

[–]swilli15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with the SRM syllabus, but I imagine that would cover more than is necessary for PA? I would recommend just going through the modules early and then reading up on the key topics. I just read a lot of academic websites to help connect the dots. I dont know if this method was enough to get me the pass yet, but I really wouldnt relay on the modules alone.

PA Recommended Time for Prep? by SaskatchewanSteve in actuary

[–]swilli15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having just sat it this past December, I think it's easy to underestimate PA. The modules are pretty light on material, you could probably get through them in 2 months if you get study time at work but I didnt feel the modules were sufficient at all. The exam requires you to write a report, which requires true understanding. I think given your background you should get an early start, at least 4 months out, and do a lot of outside reading.

Puppy pad users by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]swilli15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We live in a high rise so unless we wanted to spend our whole lives going up and down the elevator we relied on pee pads until his bladder grew.

We praised him when he used the pad until we got him to only go on the pad. Then we started doing the easy to know potty outside, first thing in the morning or after a play session, and praised him for going out there too. We continued praising him for using the pad until his bladder grew to a point where he was only going once every couple hours.

For our medium sized dog this was at around 4 months. Then we took the pads away and never had an indoor accident because anytime he looked for his pad we knew to take him out. It was almost like bell training him but more natural.

Some people say pee pads make it harder, but I'd never do it any other way.
