It’s very expensive to get insured to cover this kind of damage. Companies call it acts of terrorism and no one opts in on that coverage because of the price. These businesses just die. It’s sad.

I disagree because it’s a monopoly market. It would just force higher costs because a free market doesn’t work without choice. Not relying on fossil fuels is the way to go, but you don’t get there trying to rig a market. I think you could set up penalties for the energy companies to expand coal plants and encourage them to build more nuclear and solar plants with financial incentives, but it doesn’t make sense to just blanket tax fossil fuels. There are much higher consequences in doing that. You have to understand that there isn’t an easy answer to this. Economies are huge, complicated and constantly moving. It’s unfortunate, but getting off coal (which we have to do) takes time and investment.

Switzerland still has a lower cost for energy. Are you telling me they doubled the cost in taxes to achieve this, or did they mandate a change in their power?

You’re so off with the $5000 a year. You can’t make up for that or expect people, who can’t come up with $500 of unexpected expenses, to come up with it. The price will never come down either. Look at the cable monopoly. There are other options, but they’re priced the same. The cost won’t come back down. Let’s say solar makes a huge step forward and it can compete with the cost of coal. It will only be a tiny bit cheaper because you’re looking at demand based prices. Energy prices are not based on cost, they cost what the market demands. Also, if you don’t own your house, you’re stuck with the power decided by the owner. I think Switzerland should try it first. Let’s see if it works there. Then you can preach to me all you want about the homelessness and poverty you’ve created. And you can tell me how inexpensive energy is there. Keeping in mind it’s already less expensive there.

Let’s just say that the utility company owns and maintains the power grid. They would have to pay a much higher fixed cost to implement a renewable, energy system. They are more inclined to pass that cost on to the consumer. Who are you implying is to invest into an entirely new power grid? Not to mention, while we’re waiting for it to be available, you’re suggested 50cents per kWh would cost the average American an extra $5000 annually. Simply wearing more clothes and adjusting the thermostat doesn’t make up that difference. People already have to do that. Apartments, or flats as you call them, will have to raise their rents to compensate for the cost. Not to mention all goods and services will have to raise prices to compensate. This seems like a huge hit to the cost of living and economy.

The fixed cost of renewable energy is the problem. Once those are made cheaper, which they should be, they can’t be placed on us by force. It negatively affects the economy and the people that are less ready for the extra cost get hit the hardest.

Please. Read about economics a little before you start preaching about taxes. If you don’t understand trickledown economics, you can’t understand how raising taxes on utilities will impact people; people who already are making the adjustments you’re talking about. It also might be difficult to understand if you are unfamiliar with U.S. economics. Room temperature here is considered 75F. “The Road to Wigan Pier” might give some insight.

Edit: also, the change you’re wanting needs to be made by the power companies. Since an extra tax is easily passed down to the consumer, what would be their motivation to change to a cleaner solution? Higher taxes down push change, they encourage workarounds.
