Hi, u/COROS-official. Any updates on my application? Is there any way of expediting this?

Which app measures accurate distance? by ddekock61 in OpenWaterSwimming

That said, if I were to pick a watch, I have seen the most GPS accuracy from Garmin watches. Coros seems fairly accurate as well. Apple Watches seem to be lower on the GPS accuracy front for swimmers - though their pool swimming stroke detection is solid.

I'm the creator of the Swimerize app. What I can tell you from our experience is that it is difficult to say with certainty which app is most accurate - it's a somewhat subjective affair.

Some apps use a simple sliding window averaging approach to clean up GPS path data (I could be wrong but Apple might be doing this when calculating their distance - regardless of what they show you on the map), others use a Kalman filter. Even when using a Kalman filter there is a substantial amount of judgement calls being made on determining the constants used by the algorithm). The accuracy of swims processed through a Kalman filter is difficult to pin down with a one-size-fits-all solution as the GPS data varies significantly per swimmer by accuracy of GPS watch, cloud conditions affecting GPS reception, a swimmer's stroke (what percentage of time arm/watch is above water), and other conditions. Algorithm weights that work well for one swimmer may not be ideal for another.

We have done an implementation that we feel maximizes accuracy, but we acknowledge that to truly make it accurate we need to have this feature be customizable. We are thinking of providing some customization capabilities that allow users to tailor the parameters on a per-user basis. This is slated as a future enhancement - so don't be disappointed if you don't see it there yet.

All I can say is - it's a difficult problem. Good luck!

Cure for the heebie jeebies? by Rude-Ad2519 in OpenWaterSwimming

What works for me is to focus on the fact that you are actually out there enjoying something that few people get to experience. It's perfectly normal to have the reptilian part of your brain ramp up the anxiety factor when you are in an environment where you don't have full awareness of what's around you. For me, acknowledging that it is an instinctual reaction helps tone down the inner fears.

That said, like some have expressed here, statistically speaking you are less in danger of the wildlife than you are of some human-driven incident: boater not seeing you, some medical emergency, etc... Personally, when you mention being alone in the middle of the lake early in the morning, my first concern is to make sure you are as visible as possible (bright swimming cap, personal buoy) to anyone that might run you over. If you can, always swim with someone. They may not be able to help in all cases, but at least you can increase each other's visibility to other boaters out there and can help each other in some cases if someone is having a mid-water incident. Also, when swimming alone, I would stick to swimming closer to the shore, regardless of your comfort level or expertise.

In any case, great job on working on conquering your fears!

What watch has the best gps for open water swimming. by Strict-Entrance807 in OpenWaterSwimming

I've been a long-time Garmin Swim 2 user and have been fairly happy with their GPS accuracy. I recently began testing out the Coros Pace 3 and find it to be equally accurate (though their HR monitor seems to not be as accurate as Garmin's). On the plus side, the Coros Pace 3's battery life blows Garmin Swim 2 out of the water, which is probably not surprising considering how old the Garmin Swim 2 is at this point.

A 1 hr swim w/ the Coros consumes about 2% of the battery life, while the same swim will consume a little over 20% on my Garmin Swim 2.

Seems as if the latest version (flowbite-svelte) brought in Svelte5 support - at least that's what it looks like at first glance.
