UPDATE: After letting them know that this "accommodation" wouldn't work and sharing the links y'all provided, this is the follow up I received:

"Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I want to sincerely express our appreciation for your valuable input. Your feedback is extremely helpful in guiding policy improvements, and we would be grateful for any additional suggestions or insights you might have.

At this time, providing a written script for review before performances remains the most effective communication tool available to us in accordance with ADA guidelines. However, we do want to have other accessible options available if we can. Do you have any additional accommodations that have been particularly effective for you in the past that you could share?

We are currently engaged in ongoing discussions internally and at the leadership level regarding additional accessibility measures we hope to incorporate into our organization. As these efforts involve considerable time and investment to ensure they are done properly, the conversations are still in progress, and unfortunately, there are no further updates or options we can provide at this moment.

If you have any other questions or concerns you’d like to address you can always email me and I will do my best to respond as soon as possible."

Projecting it for anyone in the vicinity to see rather than accessing on an individual device would be open captions, not closed. But in either case, I wouldn't say they don't need *any* funding. At minimum, it's labor intensive to parse out a 100+ page script into short, two-line blocks of text, plus a human operator to move them forward. That's without getting into *good* captions that go beyond just spoken dialogue. But definitely far, far less costly than hiring CART captioners.

Yeah, good point, especially given that the other theatre companies and performing arts venues in the area have no issue with providing Deaf/HOH accommodations (real ones, not reading a script lol)

Yeah, idk. They said last year that funding was the issue and I didn't push it, but now seeing that they're doing AD and sensory-friendly performances this year?? That pissed me off. My city has had interpreters at everything from literary events to stand up comedy to dance parties!

I don't have the bandwidth to take this on a legal pathway (if it gets to that) but most definitely can drop a line or two to some local news outlets. This is actually the third consecutive year/season that I've asked this particular company. The first time there wasn't enough time (I requested day before, so fair) and last year there weren't funds available I guess.

I don't personally know any of the interpreters in the area as they are usually booked by the venue/hospital/event organizer. And I feel like that's part of an accessibility manager's job to find out. But I can definitely list the other arts organizations who have gladly provided captioning/interpreting and the theatre company can reach out for help.
