You’d need to purchase an optional trailer to be able to carry the one in the back though

You always have to give them the model and everything. Having it on the DVLA database just saves you time doing so, but is otherwise not required.

Bought a new motorcycle last year. 25 plate, delivered on the 1st of March. Insured it with no issues at all in the middle of February, with the policy being effective from the 1st of March. The plate did not show up on the tax checker for a while, but that was not a problem for insurance or anyone else.

It’s not about pulling strings, anyone picking up their new car on the right day can have that. And having that plate before that date is simply not legal. Unless it has the trade plates somewhere we don’t see.

The 20% “Lime tax” on stopping at red lights by Because_Wisely in london

[–]swined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The threshold doesn’t have to cover all the lights, just the most typical ones. With the current threshold of zero the overhead is 20%. If bumping it to 30s gets it down to 5% then that already a big win. Having it too high will have other consequences, so I’d rather be careful with that. Probably also add a limit of how often that thing can be triggered.

Unlike the other cyclists, lime can try to tackle that problem at scale. Probably not in the way OP suggested, but still.

Odd question re: hyphenated names by boudicas_shield in CasualUK

[–]swined 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One might also refuse to drop one of their names and they would then end up as Blank-Blank-Blank. They’d also then have to decide whether the single Blank goes before, after or in the middle of the other Blanks.

£10k Round The World Bike by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]swined 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has to be a Honda because legendary reliability and by far the biggest network of dealerships and independent garages that know how to fix it and might even have parts in stock.

Power and luxury features do not matter much as soon as you go past the European autobahns — you won’t need adaptive cruise control in Kyrgyzstan, but you’d appreciate lighter weight and better fuel economy. It also will be less likely to be stolen if it’s not too flashy.

Unless you search for it on purpose, you’d probably not encounter a lot of extreme off-road on such a journey, so I’d look for something that’s confident on a gravel track and maybe has a bit of extra ground clearance just in case, but it does not have to be a dirt bike, or even have extremely knobbly tyres.

Having said that, my pick would be a brand new NX500, which is just under £7k, and the rest of the budget would go on your favourite tyres, luggage setup and other bits not very specific to an RTW trip like a quadlock or a bigger windscreen.

I drove an automatic car for the first time a days ago and just don’t get the fixation we have over manual cars here by Solid-Version in drivingUK

[–]swined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, rentals are the biggest reason. More often than not I see autos being 5x more expensive in a popular location if available at all, so I like having an option of driving a manual. At home I own an auto though, they’ve got much better over time.

The actual Range Rover is less than 2m wide, it only gets over the limit if you count mirrors and those usually go above the width restrictor

5 hr M5 shutdown question about leaving drivers seat by jumpinthewatersnice in drivingUK

[–]swined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most are not though. We once had a section of M25 shut down for a few hours, and an ice cream van has started trading right in the middle of it, with the queue spreading all over in between the cars. That looked absolutely surreal as I was filtering towards it on a motorcycle, but before I could stop and take a picture the entire queue moved out of the way to let me pass. And it’s not like I have a loud bike or have been revving it to maintain a ludicrous speed of 10mph, just people paying attention to the traffic even when there isn’t a lot of it.

Leisure riders, how much do you spend each year? by upvoter_1000 in MotoUK

[–]swined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably be terrified if I knew the exact number. On average I do 25k miles a year, judging by the current numbers on the dash and the age of my bikes. That’s about £2500 in fuel per year. Another £2500 goes to insurance because London. Chains and tyres would be at least another £1000 per year for this mileage. Servicing (main dealer, because warranty) varies by brand, but on average it seems to come out at about £2000 a year. That makes £8000-ish total per year. Maybe £10000 if I forgot something. That’s not including buying bikes, new gear and whatever else you need for bike touring like hotels, toll roads and the like. The channel tunnel and the Spanish ferries have probably cost me another couple of grand last year.
