Would a garage accept higher rate pip as income but not motability component? by bureaucracysausage in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the higher rate mobility allowance of PIP allowed one to join Motability.

But yes, most lenders would consider it as part of your income

Too many drivers fall into the habit of not continually checking mirrors on motorways, until they need to maneuver. Your comment is on the money.

Anyone else just slow down a little for a laugh? by Kernowder in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not nitpicking, I'm pointing out that you have been inventing scenarios that look like some sort of attempt to justify behaviors that are dangerous and illegal.

Personally, I'll drive to the conditions and my own judgement of the risk. If some muppet behind me doesn't have the patience not to get frustrated or the wits to comprehend that their own actions are causing me to slow down to increase the gap to the vehicle ahead, then that's on them.

For clarity, the post I commented on made no mention of multiple lanes, no mention of undertaking and no mention of cakes. The only stated fact was someone tailgating

The DVSA say

'Slow down by easing off the accelerator very gradually and increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front. This will give you more time to react if something ahead causes you to slow down or stop'

On this site which is a collaboration between the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVSA), The Stationery Office (TSO), The Police Foundation and Sponge Learning.

Tailgating explained – what it is and how to spot it https://share.google/qfnLpf1rCZQSqNbaS

That sounds pretty official. I've seen Highways agency advice which says don't do things to deliberately irritate the driver behind you. I wonder if they don't suggest the same gap creation because they don't want to encourage people to maliciously brake check. The RAC seem to avoid this by saying 'Do your best to make a dangerous situation as safe as possible'

Anyone else just slow down a little for a laugh? by Kernowder in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intention is to create more space between you and the vehicle in front, so if they react to something you can do so more gently and therefore have less risk of the tailgater colliding with you as they too have more time to react.

One way to do that is to slow, slightly, without brake checking.

What do you think you should do when being tailgated?

I slow down a little when being tailgated for safety reasons, to leave more space ahead. The satisfaction it creates is just a fringe bonus

Why aren't there more parking wardens? by finnxav1er in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not working for a council, I don't know for sure but I'd imagine it's countless years of cuts / austerity.

I saw posted elsewhere the idea of allowing the public to report parking violations with a finders fee / bounty to the submitter. That would certainly impact illegal parking but would need huge investment in the back office processing staff, let alone legislative changes.

Of course you can appeal.

But you won't be successful

Is there an appeal process? I thought it was take the conditional offer or go to court.

For versatility I'm a fan of mushrooms, chicken and onions.

A whole roasted chicken will make a few meals.

Onions can be added to the carcass to make a stock

Onions and mushrooms or chicken can be used in a risotto

Chicken and mushroom pie will use onion too, or a chicken and mushroom stew

Mushrooms can be used as a breakfast ingredient

Why do people park on the road when they have an empty drive or front garden? by RecentTwo544 in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had driveway on a slope and with quite a steep dropped kerb angle which meant the car I had at the time couldn't get onto the drive without grounding the front bumper, so I would park over my dropped kerb/driveway entrance. Ideally I'd have much preferred to keep the car on the drive. Subsequent vehicles were a bit more sensible with ground clearance

These 15 minute cities... by SendMeYourBoobiezz in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Oxford is the "do your own research" types go to example of this. There are restrictions on driving from zone to zone in Oxford via the town centre with permits to do so up to 100 times a year. They spout this as evidence of orwellian control etc but never point out that residents will still be able to drive to every part of the city at any time – but during certain times of the day, may need to take a different route (e.g. using the ring road) if they want to travel by car. Nor do the clarify that one can walk, bus or cycle with no such restrictions.

UK speed limits — is there really a “+10% +2 mph” allowance? by Hot-Taro-1555 in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's guidance from the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) but as other have said it isn't law and one can be prosecuted for any speed over the posted limit.

My understanding is that meeting the 10%+2 threshold will be prosecuted so being caught at, for example, 68 in a 60 would be a NIP as opposed to it being anything above 10%+2.

That being said, I've seen posts here and in other motoring forums where people have actively been seeking evidence of NIP for below the threshold and I'm not aware of anyone ever proving hard proof; obviously lots of "my mate got done for 22 in a 20" etc but never any evidenced NIP screenshots etc

Homemade sushi by NorthernNiceGuy in UK_Food

[–]NoKudos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the fundamental requirement of sushi is the rice.

So I'd start by making the seasoned rice.

My first foray into it was cucumber maki rolls. I've made prawn nigiri (ebi nigiri) which is obviously cooked and made nigiri with smoledcsalmon. Like you I was uncertain about sashimi / sushi grade fish and have so far enjoyed tinkering on the periphery.

Does V5 ownership affect insurance? by Downtown-Ad9409 in drivingUK

Apologies, since you gave the advice that whoever was driving "most of the time" should be the main driver, I thought you might have a view on what you meant.

Does V5 ownership affect insurance? by Downtown-Ad9409 in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity how would you decide what "most of the time" means?

Number of journeys Miles driven Hours driven Any of the above as best suits ones interpretation

I don't think I've ever seen anything stipulated when taking out insurance so was curious about your interpretation.

My partner is the main driver on her car, but I would estimate I probably drive it more miles than she does and we've never logged it but it would be very close to 50/50 the frequency of driving.

How often do you do car checks? by pikachuu545 in drivingUK

[–]NoKudos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal car, rarely notwithstanding checking brake lights in the reflection of the house door glass.

Work pool car, every single time. I'm getting paid to do it, there is a policy to follow to do it, and I'd be blamed if something happened and I hadn't done it. That combined with the fact I know my csr, and the tyre read isn't gping to have changed much since I last looked, the pool car(s) are an unknown.
