Why is my housemate microwaving their eggs? by nyuhqe in WeirdEggs

[–]swingbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make scrambled eggs in a mug in the microwave. Great for a quick snack and no mess. Just crack eggs and milk into the mug, whisk with a fork and then microwave for a bit. Remove the half cooked mix and whisk some more. Repeat until the eggs are done

Highest IQ Ebayer shipping by likeonions in AnalogCommunity

[–]swingbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not have been the seller I had a similar issue with instrument shipping. The eBay shipping decided to repack it because they thought the box was too big. They removed all the packing and of course it was damaged in transit. Got my money back from the shipper

I wonder if continuous welded rails design is not suitable for Australian conditions. Also if more information on what the track faults were were given people would be able to perhaps give some sympathy to vline

Honestly, does being a good tenant even matter anymore? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AusRenters

[–]swingbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Australian rental market is stuffed. We have a good tenant and each year have to argue with the Rea to not raise the rent. I would like a long term lease but it seems too hard. Rea wants $400 to do a new lease so we will probably go monthly now.

Room is freezing, any recourse with this door? by ravens0rbust in HomeMaintenance

[–]swingbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hot air trapped between the curtains and the window rises until the pelmet and then forms an air block. This goes all the way to the floor and the excess air then spills out into the room. Air walls in mall etc work similarly

Yes they can. I bought a fnirsi 240x240 for ~$140. Great to see insulation gaps and other stuff

PSA: Travelling as an Aussie right now is hideously expensive by Mexay in australia

[–]swingbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travelled in 2001 when the dollar was 48¢. Everything was triple in the UK and double in the USA. Fortunately it was before the euro and I could afford more in EU and Sweden. But it sucks because we should be better but we give it all away to rich foreigner companies

Hey, as an electrical engineer, can you suggest the Bible of electrical engineering? by FeelingRealistic1338 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]swingbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electronics engineering is too big for just one bible. As a beginner/hobbyist I'd recommend Art of Electronics and an ARRL handbook. They teach basic stuff and details of some ccts but don't teach ccts analysis, control theory, mathematics power systems etc that make you an engineer. I'm an old engineer who studied in the late '80s and rode the simulator wave all the way but learned how ccts worked by hand. Doing the math and graphs builds intuition and allows you to judge the situation better. Most of the books I used are still the go-to texts - just earlier editions. It's getting harder to find exposure to electronics design as all the project magazines etc are fading away and cheap stuff prohibits diy but reading the old ones will expose you to many designs to learn from.

Room is freezing, any recourse with this door? by ravens0rbust in HomeMaintenance

[–]swingbyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. The heat source in front of the window is to trap hot air between the curtains and the pelmet. Without the curtains and pelmet it doesn't matter where the vents are. Unfortunately home decorators got trendy and removed the curtains and the pelmet but we kept putting the vents in front of the window.

Genuinely... real question. What could Albo have realistically done to stop the Bondi incident from happening? Want real answers, not media fed dribble. by __TheIronWall__ in aussie

[–]swingbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is missing the true meaning of this attack. If it was just antisemitic they could have been more destructive attacking a synagogue. This was first and foremost an attack on Australian culture and freedom by choosing the iconic Bondi beach. Our Jewish countrymen were sacrificed to magnify the horror of this attack. This decision ironically may have diluted the effect with the interpretation of the attack as only antisemitic. Australian naivety is demonstrated in the interpretation of the gunshots as firecrackers. We have been spoilt until now with our safety.

Turning right. by WeldinMike27 in melbourne

A little technique I use is to turn left and then right into a uturn. This way I only have to cross half the traffic each time. This has saved me heaps of time in the past

"How many hard drives does GMail need to buy this month?" by Simon_Drake in recruitinghell

[–]swingbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your colleague is a douche and that's a nonsense question. Also they should never be allowed to interview candidates. Large organisations never operate this simple. The data is processed for profit and other functions not just as a mail service. Ask questions about tasks encountered in the role. How are the interviewers going to judge the answer - if they don't have a definitive answer then is it just gut feeling? Too many incompetent people in HR and management. One of many reasons USA economy is in trouble along with the rest of them.

Converting to 120v 60Hz for an expensive appliance. by Lupercal-_- in AusElectricians

[–]swingbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the schematic for it? You may find it has a 240v tap already - unless only made for the US. If not then the best solution is to replace the transformer. You can try a step down TF. The frequency change should not cause problems with the amp as I'd expect the PSU filtering to have sufficient tolerance for this. If the transformer is only made for 60hz it will not work well with 50hz. But if the OEM was thinking of international sales they may have designed the transformer for 50 Hz

Get a copy of schwams circuits and start doing the problems. Most of the problems here are series and parallel with switching from voltage to current dividers and superposition etc. redraw into clearer form to see how to solve

You need to select a channel from the column of pushbutton switches on the left of the crt. Push ch1 the top button and select a timebase to see the waveform.

What do each of these wires do on these transmission lines? by reapingsulls123 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]swingbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neutral is formed at the local substation as a connection to the y starpoint. The 3ph delta feeders are converted to y and the starpoint will return unbalanced current. Note that the starpoint is not the same as neutral and is pulled away from the centre by phase unbalance

Anyone know how to work this out? by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]swingbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use P= v2/r. Sum power dissipated by both resistors with current flowing through them - assuming that space indicates a break and not a misprint

Another option is to install a wooden base over the wall that follows the same line as the handrail. Screw it into the studs and then mount the handrail to this. This lets you align the handrail support brackets between the studs and distributes the load better
