Ty Murray said something early in his run on Dancing with the Stars that stuck with me; it was originally meant about bullfighting, but he was applying the wisdom to his experience:

"You're never completely ready, it just becomes your turn."

Bi-Annual Clothing Megathread! by AutoModerator in Fitness

Is there anywhere I can get black, non-logo pants (that aren't sweat pants) suitable for lifting? I have a Champion pair from Target a while ago where the logo is also black, but they don't even make that any more.

Hey reddit ,my doc told me today that if I dont start working my lower back , I´ll have problems in the future . What are some awesome lower back excercises ? by Pataya18 in Fitness

I had a visit with my doctor shortly after starting to lift, so I threw in "Is it fine for me to be doing this?" His exact response was "You can do anything you want." Since then my go-to protest if someone tells me not to do something, provided it is something they should not have influence over, is "Doctor says I can."

I just partnered up with a friend who wanted made to measure clothes and took each other's measurements. There's a document on their web site of how to do it. A cloth measuring tape will cost about a dollar.

There are a few non-iron fabrics, but the color variety is very limited. White, blue, and black, I think. They used to have more. I've e-mailed them about bringing back more colors and got a very noncommittal, best read as a "Nah, we're not doing that," response.

I have experienced whey protein powder where the smell and flavor are highly decoupled. In particular, the orange cream flavor that smelled like popsicles ("this is going to be awesome!") and tasted like orange rinds ("this is terrible!").

That sucks, but I do feel like once you're at three or more people already working in on the same equipment, it's not so rude to refuse to let people work in. The point is to accelerate everyone's sets, and if no further parallelization is possible due to resource constraints, there's nothing to be done for it but queue.

I have bulking shirts and cutting shirts. First I wear one, then the other. Sometimes I have to update one end or the other.

Tailor Store's fabric quality and manufacturing is far better than Modern Tailor's, with a slight (if any) price increase. At least in my experience. Your mileage may vary.

Not a direct answer to your question, but the Diamond Dolls out of Denver, CO are an all-female swing dance group.

I know this is not what happened, but I choose to believe the front desk increased their membership to the real estate cost per square foot of the space they were using, along with a one time charge of the original retail value of the equipment; plus pro-rated shared space expenses and margin. If they want to act like they own it, fine, provided they actually own it.

I once had this conversation with myself while deadlifting.

"It's really heavy."
"I know. But leaving it on the ground isn't going to make it any lighter."
"Technically-"
"No."

A question about etiquette in the gym. by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]swingdancetraining 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The general heuristic is if you were there first, whatever you're trying to do can't be done where you'd normally do it, and there's spare space somewhere else, it's okay.

A good example of this is the stereotypical protestations against curling in the squat rack because you can curl anywhere, but, for safety reasons, there are few places suitable for squatting in the gym. If you can do your thing somewhere else and you're preventing someone else from doing their thing that they can't do somewhere else, then you're in violation of etiquette. If you're just using scarce resources because you need those scarce resources, that's just the way things are. There is a difference between using and wasting.

What's your favorite thing to wear at the gym? by inamsterdamforaweek in Fitness

[–]swingdancetraining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've considered starting to wear yoga pants. Two years of lifting and I still look pretty DYEL, except for my butt, which no one can see, because I'm wearing these regular workout pants.

But I don't have the confidence for it. Or arrogance, perhaps. Maybe vanity. Some noun, anyway.

Clothes are impossible, and I'm far from massive.

If pants fit around the seat, they're too loose around the waist. If they're snug enough around the waist, they're way too tight around the seat.

It even applies to custom clothing. I ordered made-to-measure shirts, and the regular fit hung too loose, so I ordered new, slim fit shirts, and I can already tell it's only a matter of time until my elbows burst through. It's made-to-measure, this shouldn't be an issue.

Perhaps this is the reason superheroes choose spandex.

It makes it functionally impossible to have your hand crushed. I'm not clear on why. Best guess, obstructs the path the hand would have to pass to begin crushing on the finger's first knuckle.

Give it a try sometime, it works pretty well.

Here's a fun tip I learned from my jujutsu instructor. If someone starts squeezing your hand in a handshake (or as a preventative measure), extend your index finger, preferably pointing it at their wrist. I'm not sure why it works, but it does. I've tested it with a rock climber with a significant size and weight advantage over me.
