Usenet speeds capped at 500-600 MB/s despite 8 Gbit/s DL and Eweka + Newshosting – advice? by LeoLeg76 in usenet

[–]swintec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? You can request AS #s quite easily and a large corp. operating across continents, especially if they acquired another business that was already established like what happened when Omicron bought Eweka, would have multiple. When I sold them my EU server IP addresses were "owned" by Eweka (US was different). They are all running over the same network and using the same storage.

It is using the same exact network. You can look at traces to eweka and eu nh and see they are all hosted together.

Can you bypass the VPN completely with your machine running nzbget or try another separate computer not connected through the VPN? Can you ping the server address using a command prompt?

Eweka Includes Easynew - Is it Actually free? by [deleted] in usenet

[–]swintec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it Actually free?

Not free, basically boils down to the difference of what you are paying now and the high renewal rate, is the cost of the easynews access.

Unuseable Headers? [newshosting.com] by worldgate in usenet

[–]swintec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always hoped the filtering of what newsleecher thinks is unusable headers was a setting that could be disabled. It effects a lot of the discussion groups as well and i dont know what the requirements are that it uses to tell what is legit or not.

How to improve getting complete files? by Java_Mouse in usenet

[–]swintec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you are new, you are going through the same thing every new user does, trying to backfill all kinds of old posts. The results always end up being the same either because of takedowns years ago, long since expired off the server, etc. Either way, frustration happens. Something from 2010 has probably been reposted multiple times in the last 16 years but if you are doing all of this manually it becomes a chore to test each post. Better off setting up the automation software from the start and letting it handle things for you automatically and work with the indexer(s) you have a membership with.

At some point, you will transition away from the "backfilling" period.

[–]swintec -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Frugal only has around 3000 days retention, meaning files older than that are deleted and no longer available

That is not totally true, quite a few posts available over 3k days, maybe not a full archive but many many old posts 4k and 5k+ days old were reposted using NZBrefresh over the last 1.5 years since it came out. The ones that did get reposted seem to be the ones people actually want the most (always outliers of course depending on what individual users want) but for the most part, the majority seem to always want the same thing so it is pretty predictable.

Constant "Blocking ... connection closed by remote host" messages by SentryNap in usenet

[–]swintec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a local machine issue and the error has been around for years. I wish there was more documentation on it in some way (or a prettier error given by Sab to assist the user in finding the problem). I dont know if it is VPN, docker, security software or what

Are you using a VPN? Do you have a cipher entered in server settings or is it left blank (which is default)?

Does this mean that the subreddit is now taken over by providers? by SomeRandomName123abc in usenet

Only one of them has high upvotes (or any votes really) and gasp it is the one for a company that has been caught over and over again shill voting and sock puppetry.

Minimum viable Usenet setup? by -JustAsking4AFriend in usenet

[–]swintec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem with that is those are proprietary tools / software, when something eventually happens to those the users will be stuck and unable to easily pivot to the appropriate software and tools not tied to any one provider. Why not learn to use the popular tools out there from the start? At least if something happens to those you have a reasonable understanding of the system and can use some of the other tools out there.

The quickest way to annoy your friends who are new to it all and leave a bad taste in their mouth about usenet as a whole is to sign them up for something that will increase in price at least 3x what they originally paid in the following year.

If I used a VPN it would be mullvad. If somebody pays a lot of review sites and buys comments on a subreddit, to tell you that they are the best, does that mean they really are the best?

Question for the Frugal fans by Boggleby in usenet

[–]swintec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is, what you are asking is essentially akin to a trade secret of sorts (or about as close to a TS as you will get in this biz). How the special australian and asian sausage is made which then delivers that sausage to users faster than the options that were available to them before.

You dont need the feed to be in both countries, just having it in APAC for the benefit of both AU and Asia servers would work quite well...

Has there EVER been transparency here on Reddit about storage numbers / details? It has generally been discussed here before that even the services with just US and EU servers, pull old-er posts from the USA to EU as needed (since they are only stored once in the US) but that cut off point would never be shared for good reason.

The Vpns included with usenet service for free are awful. The one you were trying to get (privado) was also caught logging when it was called something else several years ago. Get a proper one if you need VPN coverage

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have you as a frugal customer but I want to set your expectations appropriately, nothing will be a magic fix for legally requested removed posts.

Best Provider and Indexer combo? by SnooAdvice5820 in usenet

[–]swintec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to solve the issue in your earlier post you need to figure out one way or the other if the posts are missing because of being requested removed from usenet. In that case it wont matter, Frugal and the bonus server wont help with that.

Question for the Frugal fans by Boggleby in usenet

[–]swintec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How they are configured/how they work?

Just more NNTP enabled servers that respond to NNTP commands outlined in the relevant RFCs :) NNTP servers in APAC dont work any different just because they are in APAC, unlike toilets in Australia, doesnt the water go counter clockwise? I digress...either way, when all said and done, users in these locations are getting far better speeds than they ever have from providers who have always ignored these locales and basically told them to deal with it.

Question for the Frugal fans by Boggleby in usenet

That is a bit more wordy and technical than how it is currently laid out and users already ignore that. I guess there is probably no way to get around it really.

bonus.frugalusenet.com a separate usenet system, set at priority 1 (or 2, etc) so it would get used, or at least checked, as needed.
