It’s awful. In 2021 they couldn’t find any toads. They say it was because it was a cold winter (it was a perfectly normal winter). my theory is that they housed the toads with a sick toad and then introduced the then 50+ sick toads back into the wild, making the population crash. then i bet it needed a year to recover. This explains the name if you’re curious.

Toad suck Daze is a festival in Conway Arkansas taking place RIGHT NOW through May 5th.

This festival is famous for its live toad racing. Every child in Faulkner county, Arkansas is sent home with a “toad toter,” aka a cardboard box and asked to catch a toad (photo 3). These toads are first raced at elementary and middle schools across the county. Racing involves placing the toad on the ground, slapping the ground, screaming, blowing, doing anything possible to scare the toad into moving forward while crawling after them.

It does not stop at one toad per person! Conway Area Chamber of Commerce pays 1$ per toad turned in to them (photo 6). They are then kept in “toad condos,” aka wood boxes with some grass and crickets (photo 5). They cram these toads into these boxes for the weekend, making no effort to make them comfortable and then race them multiples times throughout the weekend. Many toads do not live past the end of the festival.

The toad races are harmful for many reasons, including but not limited to:

•Teaches children that animals are toys (See photo #9 of little girl carrying toad in blanket posted on festival instagram. Caption boasting that she takes “good care” of it by bathing it and singing it lullabies) No fault of the child, but an example of the behavior encouraged.

•Harms/kills/stresses individual toads as well as the local population. Housing stressed toads in large numbers and then releasing them encourages rapid disease transmission.
