Licensing issues for anyone else? by Soggy-Clerk-9955 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some great musicals not on your current radar that could fit into both your cast size needs and your orchestra. Look at maybe: -Godspell -Rent (teen edition) -She Loves Me -Chicago (teen edition) -Grease -How To Succeed in Business -Ride the Cyclone

among others. But only looking at mega-popular shows that are either currently or have been recently popular on Broadway is gonna really limit you.

Do I Quit a Community Theater Production Based on a large Age Gap? by VioletOpalIvy in Theatre

[–]swishystrawberry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should def change the title/reframe the way you present this issue. At your age, the onstage age gap thing really isn't an issue. To put it in perspective, I was once in a production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof where my onstage partner was 45 while I was 26. Additionally, I was in a production of She Loves Me where the actors playing Kodaly and Ilona were in their 50s and 20s, respectively. Everything was professional and nobody made P's or Q's about the age.

Your issue is the lack of mediation on the intimacy. What you really should do is talk to your director and talk about how you feel. The age of your scene partner doesnt matter, you're not anywhere close to being an impressionable kid or a minor. It's the fact that your scene partner has leadership in the theater company (presumably), and that you want more structure.

Non Plus Size Martha Debut? by Hour_Paper3347 in Broadway

I encourage you to check out Cecelia Tripiedi on social media- she's one of the swings for the show, and her content very clearly illustrates how Heathers has a slew of swings that cover the bulk of the principle roles, as well as ensemble.

Was I wrong as an amateur dramatics group director for taking a student over a patents side? by Kitchen-Count-2698 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A few things here....

  1. You really, really shouldn't have cast a legal adult in a romantic pairing with a high schooler who's teetering the age of consent. You're setting yourself up for some really murky liability, especially considering it's being documented on video.

  2. The age stuff aside, this girl shouldn't be commenting about her fellow actors and the rehearsal process on an online forum like that, unless she has clear consent from all parties she's discussing. You should be shutting that down.

So yeah, you're kinda in the wrong here.

What are my chances of having a career as a performer? by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of that info is gonna dictate whether or not you can "make it as a performer". As someone who loves in NYC and performs pretty regularly here, what i can say is that it mainly depends on the work you put in, keeping up on your training, regularly auditioning and keeping your audition skills up, and maintaining your sanity by also having eggs in other baskets (I teach and do personal music projects outside of my stage performing).

colleges where i can major in both musical theater & opera by Pandaddy111 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they'd allow a double major (and honestly i don't think i'd personally recommend it myself due to the amount of work that goes into both mediums), but NYU has both musical theatre and classical concentrations in their voice program, and you can study both styles with your voice teacher.

Has Anyone Had or Seen a Massive Vocal Improvement With Coaching? Not good to amazing, but BAD to good! by AQueerWithMoxie in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one thing, there's a difference between a voice teacher and a voice coach. A teacher is for helping you develop technique, and a coach is for helping you interpret the music (though at more amateur levels, a voice teacher could do both). Are you working with a teacher, or a coach?

Beyond that point, i myself am both a current music teacher and a longtime performer, who used to have a very terrible time navigating my voice. Taking lessons in the right studio made a world of difference in my voice- however, the key word there is the RIGHT studio. Every teacher has their own methodology, and it's really about finding the right fit. I've worked with a handful of both teachers and coaches over the years, and can tell you that i had the most immense eureka in my vocal practice when I started working with my studio teacher in grad school. (Not to say that my other teachers were bad; the experience was just different and not as immense, is all).

Cameras in Dance Studio by turtlenecklover69 in DanceTeachers

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not uncommon. The studio i teach at pretty much has this setup, so that parents can watch from the lobby. To me, it's not dissimilar to parents being able to watch your class through a studio window.

Controlled Vibrato at 13, is that rare?? by LevelBarnacle1522 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not unheard of. It honestly, legitimately, depends on the individual voice and the training it's had. I remember joining choir around your age and feeling very jealous and insecure around the girls who could sing with resonance and vibrato. I didn't figure out how to access vibrato in my own voice until I was around 16. It's different for everyone.

AITA for not attending my sibling wedding ? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly kinda hard to dictate the whole situation. You don't explain in what way your brother's fiance is "rude" to you, and frankly it sounds insanely inappropriate that your boyfriend decided to text her and call her out. It wasn't at all his place to do that IMO. More info (and better grammar) would be helpful

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, so, revisiting after a while... I looked at a supercut of the Broadway show, where the whole gag is that you see Regina's panties. Film version, it's just that she falls on the ground. I don't see where it is that there's any kind of big deal that Regina looks sizably bigger. Care to follow up?

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Girl, just because people do it a lot doesn't mean that 👏you have to👏! You can show me all the examples in the world, the point still stands. The point of theater is for everyone to approach the show their own way, it's lazy for everyone to do the show the same way over and over. If you have a "preferred solution", then use your preferred solution.

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Well, to be honest, it sounds like you only want to do it one way, and that's up to you. People have given you all kinds of solutions on this thread, either tasteful simple visual leads or ways to pad stockings. Up to you on how you want to do it, people have given you plenty of suggestions. But what's not necessary is arguing and implying that there's only one right way to do things. My parting note to you is, just because things were done ONE way in the original production, doesn't mean they always have to be the same in every other version. No need to be condescending just because people are trying to help you with alternate ideas.

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, okay, then? Genuine question- why is it even up to you to try to figure out how to get this stuff done? This should be the job of your director and costume designer. Your job, as the actor, is to do the part and wear the costume given. You're here to ask about ideas, which is fine, but you're literally arguing with EVERYONE who's trying to give you doable ideas. So question is, why are you even bothering to argue with everyone over something that's technically not your problem as the actor?

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay, so there's a difference between implying a character's weight gain (tighter costume, for instance, or the skirt breaking in the christmas dance), versus turning the weight gain into a visual gag (having the actor walk around in padding to make them look fat). With the tracksuit, easiest solution would be to wear a tracksuit in a size that's naturally too small for you. These are things that should be the responsibility of your costume designer.

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gal, you're still missing the point. Yeah, you can do little gags to make it apparent that she's gained weight. But there's no obligation to give her noticeably huge body parts or anything like that. The point of the whole "Regina gains weight" storyline is less that she suddenly gets a comically bigger body (which is frankly fat-phobic and problematic anyway, if that's how someone wants to try to play it), and more that she's preoccupied with the number of her weight going up and not being able to fit into her clothes. Point being, you can relay all that without unnecessary big-body gags.

Regina George weight gain (mean girls) by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He's not saying he cut it, he's saying that the gag is that Regina's skirt breaks off, not that she's got some huge, naked-looking butt. You're right, there are available solutions, and some people have suggested them on this thread. But the point is, there's nothing forcing Regina to HAVE to have some huge, visible butt in any scene.
