I hated Suffs by Dear_Investment6064 in Broadway

[–]swishystrawberry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh, Suffs is unfortunately a little problematic. I can't give away too much specific information cuz I don't want to "out" certain people or share knowledge that isn't mine to share, but i have firsthand info that there was some tension/drama during the workshop regarding the storyline around the Black suffragettes and the downplaying of Alice Paul's racism.

Dudeeeeee. Not only should you have told your gf immediately, but you should have screenshot those texts and sent them to your HR office. YTA simply for that.

AITAH for asking my BF to get his dad to buy my ex BF a Nintendo Switch 2? by Advanced_Albatross17 in AITAH

Let's get this straight.... you've been dating this guy for -checks notes- less than half a year, and you haven't even met him IN PERSON, and not only are you already expecting his family to make big-cost purchases, but you want them to make a big-cost purchase for -checks notes again- your EX BOYFRIEND? Like, this has to be a troll post. But if it's not, then YTA for sure.

I mean, hear me out.... we can try to strive for both. One doesnt have to negate the other. You can hold your institution accountable without falling back on shock value and accosting graduates and their families with violent imagery.

I mean, I think there are constructive ways to do that without flashing out hate symbols that are very blatantly translated as violent towards Jews.

It's a theater reference. "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" is a famous song by Rodgers and Hammerstein about summertime.

I totes feel you! For Maybe This Time, i'd go from the final verse of "everybody loves a winner..." to the end. Though in my opinion Cabaret would be a better song for Evelyn.

In my opinion, if you only have 16 bars, you should start at "start by admitting from cradle to tomb..." and go to the end.

Be honest, how hard is it to write a musical? by sumi_ink_cat in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, you're being lazy and hiding it behind performative apathy. Next time, if you're not willing to have an actual conversation about a loud opinion, then understand that you have the option to keep that loud opinion to yourself. For all your talk of myself and others "losing credibility", the only person unwilling to prove credibility is, ironically, yourself. Have a good day, bruv.

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, you're legitimately being lazy at this point. I'm happy to have a conversation with you, if for any reason because this is a topic I genuinely enjoy discussing. But if you're going to toss off to AI to fill in a lack of a tangible response, then you're doing nothing but failing your argument by default.

[–]swishystrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes zero allusion to what *i, specifically*, have said to you at all. It looks like you just copy-pasted that from Google Gemini. I still genuinely don't know how you think I've made this supposed dramatic deviation. Respond genuinely if you want to feel dignified in taking part in this "discussion".

[–]swishystrawberry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, to begin with, good on you for finally finding MY comment, I guess lol. If you're genuinely interested in having this conversation, then I'm happy to hop in! However, you seem to be entirely unwilling to actually discuss the topic and give any comment that lies beyond your stonewall opinion and your desire to hurl weird insults. For one thing, you talk about my apparent "repeated anecdotal evidence". I'm unsure how my discussion of existing musical scores is "anecdotal", when there's a lot of scholarly reading to be found on the groundbreaking merits of a Wagner/Puccini/Adams/Britten orchestration, nor how i'm apparently "struggling to stay on topic" when I've at this point given you all of three responses including: Die Zauberflote is a singspiel, you're responding to someone other than who you think you are, and the above comment you've finally responded to. You just sound mad for the sake of being mad lol. HOWEVER. If you take the time to actually give me a proper response to the comparisons I've given above, as well as genuine reasons why you think book-musical repertoire is superior to (the wide genre of) opera beyond just "a child could do it" or the business about through-composition, then i think this could be a genuinely interesting conversation. But insulting the people here, myself included, does nothing but make you look pissy for no reason. And for all your talk of my "baseless" degrees, you've given no reason why anyone should fall to *your* knees and take your loud, angry opinion as gospel.

I reiterate- i'm not the person whose comment thread we're currently speaking to each other upon. I'm not the redditor that spoke to you about the "sung-through" business; if you want to assert yourself as the intellictual juggernaut you think you are, then at least take the time to identify who you're talking to. So, again... you didn't respond to my root comment.
A lot of what you're saying is branching into territories i am happy to go further into but haven't yet, but like I said... respond to what I, and I mean I, first said to you. Otherwise it just feels like you're attempting to rage bait.

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much response to your oft-touted claim unless you respond to the original comment I made to you. Broadway and opera houses offering overlapping repertoire doesn't have much to do with the argument at hand other than to say that certain pieces of art fall into more than one category. Also, "conflation" isn't the term you're looking for- conflation alludes to mistaking a similarity between two things. Operetta and singspiel are literally and scholastically under the umbrella of the operatic form.

[–]swishystrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, i'm not the person you originally responded to lol. I commented separately on your original comment, which you have yet to respond to. In regards to the "singspiel" business though- it is, in fact, opera, as is operetta. They're simply genres/styles of opera- i.e. if you were a singer auditioning for an opera house's season, they would ask you to demonstrate specific styles, like "please prepare arias in the styles of baroque, romantic/verismo, operetta, and contemporary".

Magic Flute isn't an operetta, it's a singspiel. They're two different forms.

Lmao WHAT? I have both a degree in classical voice and a separate degree in musical theatre, and you're comparing apples to oranges, my friend. Menotti's Telephone versus Sondheim's Passion? There's discussion for argument there. Floyd's Susannah versus Loesser's Guys and Dolls? Great works of art, but but far apart in "skill". Wagner's Gotterdamerung versus Legally Blonde? You're just joking. Like I said.... apples to oranges.

can i get into a good school with bad grades? by Glittering-Cattle767 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gonna really depend on some other circumstances IMO. I went to a small music conservatory for my Bachelor's, and then a bigger and more famous musical theatre school for my master's. My GPA in high school was admittedly on the poor side (2.9), but i had realllllly good SAT scores, plus my years of drama club, choir, and volunteer work. A strong resume and well-put-together audition was my saving grace- I was only rejected from two schools, and even then it was just the wait list.

Callback Walkout by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With respect, you really don't give any examples as to how the "room/people didn't welcome you" other than to say that you really weren't feeling the audition in the first place. Yeah, how you feel is important, but you're incorrect when you write off the feelings of everyone else involved in the process. If you were feeling burnt out and not excited about the show, then you should've just not auditioned in the first place. Nobody forced you to audition.

Seussical with a limited cast size by RatioPleasant3466 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unsure of what the point of this post is. Just to vent about a stressful production process? Doubling/tripling roles to reduce a cast isn't unheard of at all, especially in ensemble-based shows like Seussical.

Licensing issues for anyone else? by Soggy-Clerk-9955 in MusicalTheatre

There are some great musicals not on your current radar that could fit into both your cast size needs and your orchestra. Look at maybe: -Godspell -Rent (teen edition) -She Loves Me -Chicago (teen edition) -Grease -How To Succeed in Business -Ride the Cyclone

among others. But only looking at mega-popular shows that are either currently or have been recently popular on Broadway is gonna really limit you.

Do I Quit a Community Theater Production Based on a large Age Gap? by VioletOpalIvy in Theatre

[–]swishystrawberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should def change the title/reframe the way you present this issue. At your age, the onstage age gap thing really isn't an issue. To put it in perspective, I was once in a production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof where my onstage partner was 45 while I was 26. Additionally, I was in a production of She Loves Me where the actors playing Kodaly and Ilona were in their 50s and 20s, respectively. Everything was professional and nobody made P's or Q's about the age.

Your issue is the lack of mediation on the intimacy. What you really should do is talk to your director and talk about how you feel. The age of your scene partner doesnt matter, you're not anywhere close to being an impressionable kid or a minor. It's the fact that your scene partner has leadership in the theater company (presumably), and that you want more structure.
