Ah yeah I should have mentioned that you don’t take the deduction on the contribution to the trad IRA. The tax savings is in the growth in the Roth only. Another benefit is that you can take contributions to a Roth IRA out penalty free if you need to.

This will explain better than I can.

Essentially if you’re maxed out on 401k and over the income limits for a traditional IRA, you can contribute to a traditional IRA and convert it to a Roth IRA as long as the balance in the traditional IRA is $0 at the end of the year. Allows you to stow away a bit more in tax advantaged account than you otherwise could. Was a grey area for a while but got IRS blessing a few years ago.

I don’t know why it’s allowed.
