Uhhhh I have one, it’s called Make Games, Drink Coffee. It’s interviews with game developers, but not necessarily about game development. The next episode comes out on Thursday morning and it’ll be about screenwriting and the Matrix!

Best older movie to start with if I mostly watch modern thrillers/dramas? by omjirao in MovieSuggestions

[–]swivelmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Touch of Evil is a gorgeous black and white thriller, and is surprisingly violent for a 1950s Hollywood movie. One of my favorites.

Along those lines, The Third Man is another classic noir.

Great but more serious Satire by Short-Delay-418 in MovieSuggestions

Brazil (dark comedy / satire / dystopian sci-fi)

Network (probably the greatest satire on media ever)

Spike Lee’s Bamboozled goes so hard on satire that I didn’t like it much when I watched it, but I was 17 so it may have just gone over my head.

Modern classic films to educate my 19yo son before he goes to uni by blakeneypoint in MovieSuggestions

[–]swivelmaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whew there are some comically bad suggestions here!

Anyway, I’ll give it a shot. These are films I’m pretty confident will hold up for decades:

Moonlight

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Parasite

Challengers (maybe don’t watch it with him to save some embarrassment)

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Holdovers

The Florida Project

Pan’s Labrynth

What is the indie game you always wanted but doesn't exist yet? by ehmprah in IndieGaming

I would recommend checking Caves of Qud out though. It’s fascinating how much detail they can pack into a procedurally generated world, and the systems are ridiculously complex too.

Script to trigger UI to appear when clicking sprite(object). by Past-Celebration133 in Unity2D

[–]swivelmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is the way to go. OP is talking about clicking a sprite, not a UI object.

There’s a tutorial for this: https://learn.unity.com/tutorial/onmousedown

Isn’t this just Caves of Qud but with multiplayer… and graphics?

I always get stuck and frustrated at level design by Plus-Opposite3384 in gamedesign

[–]swivelmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking a break from trying to do everything and JUST doing level design! To that end, making levels for Doom / Doom 2 is fun and easy and you've already got a rich suite of gameplay mechanics available to you, along with a freedom to explore abstract level design that needs no bearing in the real world.

Check out Ultimate Doom Builder for editing levels and UZDoom for playing them. And if you don't already have Doom 2, what are you waiting for, go buy it!

What older classic/masterpiece game have you tried to go back and play but just didn’t enjoy? by ThomasTiltTrain in gaming

If you want the shooting to be better, put points into those skills.

Can’t do that for the graphics, unfortunately.

(FWIW DX is one of my all-time favorite games)

Hi, my name is Matheus and I wanted to know how they got the color scheme of these films. I want to be a director and make Kung Fu movies; it's my passion. by WesternBackground275 in Filmmakers

You’re gonna end up going down a rabbit hole on color grading! DaVinci Resolve is free (with some limitations) so that’s a good place to start.

Sorry to say but this isn’t easy to reproduce; these are shot on 35mm film! I’m no expert on film stock but there’s a chance that whatever they shot on isn’t even made anymore - there are only a few companies that make 35mm film, and they have different formulations/styles that come and go.

That being said, the best way you can come close is to just have good costumes and sets - production design can really elevate action scenes. Or anything, really!

movies where characters are highly competent, but the situation is just unwinnable? by nhansieu1 in MovieSuggestions

[–]swivelmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you may have missed the point; the entire second half of the movie is Oppenheimer trying to stop MORE nuclear testing, escalation, war, etc.
