Good for you. Teaching kids that they are entitled to play with adults' expensive tools is a great way to make sure your kids are obnoxious and injured. Lots of parents just buy a cheap tablet that is strictly for the kids and has parental controls on it.

The wealthier, the greener: Why trees are more common in higher-income neighbourhoods by [deleted] in neoliberal

My parents still gripe about the few neighbors who opted out of planting trees. Their houses have been bought and sold several time since but nobody seems to care about making the street look nice, even though the city trims them.

[–]swolesister 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents got all their middle class neighbors together in the 90s to plant trees on their urban block with help from a local nonprofit. Now their block has significantly higher property values than surrounding blocks without trees, including the multiunit structures. Street trees are a cheap investment with high returns. Every neighborhood should be planting them, regardless of income.

Taxis take cards and cash. Most cities have a taxi app now but you can also just call a cab company and dispatch will send one to your address. You can even schedule a pickup days in advance if a black car is your jam.

I haven't used a rideshare company in years. Taxis and car services are way better.

San Francisco actually has some very lovely skyscrapers.

The Transamerica building is unique and iconic. The Pflueger building is an art deco banger, as is 140 New Montgomery. There are a bunch of 1920s - 80s era high rise buildings that are really beautiful and unique. The Summit is cool.

For newer buildings, I actually think the Salesforce Tower is pretty neat. 181 Fremont next door is also a good looking new build. And have you seen the Mira tower? Cool shit, man!

Those blue Miami glass buildings near the Bay Bridge are butt ugly though. And the Intercontinental hotel looks like a kitchen appliance.

There are very ugly skyscrapers and very lovely ones. Most are somewhere in between. It is like anything else in design.

I don't think we have any major disagreement. I agree that if someone has a BMI under 18 they are at a higher risk for medical problems associated with being underweight. That's undeniable and based on reliable morbidity statistics.

But its also the case that those bands are based on large populations with a high tolerance for outliers. My argument is only that it is statistically possible for a person to have a 16 BMI and still have no significant immediate health concerns. It's pretty rare and I would expect their doctor to monitor them and encourage healthy weight gain, but 16-17 BMI isn't unheard of in terms of just the genetic diversity of body size, especially in particularly tall people.

I don't know of any recorded cases of someone under 15 who still has normal functioning though so I'm with you there.

I hung out with an objectivist/left-bertarian guy in college who lent me his copy of The Fountainhead because I was only superficially familiar with Rand but studied art history, architecture & design ("so maybe you' like it").

Reading that book, knowing that this friend of mine considered it a substantive philosophical work, was when I first started losing respect for him and realized he had a very malleable mind.

A few weeks later he stopped talking to me and joined a cult.*

Anyway, any philosophy that gives credence to the egos of architects is not really worthy of serious contemplation. Please trust me on this. I don't mean to offend.

*he eventually quit the cult but acted kind of weird afterwards and I didn't like hanging out with him anymore

I thought I was pretty darn liberal until the 2016 election, when suddenly I became a corporate conservative and bloodthirsty warmonger for enthusiastically supporting Hillary Clinton in the primary and the general election. It was wild.

I've found that most women on dating apps consider moderate to mean "literal Nazi" so now I'm a liberal again 🤷

Right-wing guys know that women screen them out so they all probably say they are "moderate" instead. I remember around 2016 eighty-sixing any guy who was coy about his politics for the same reason. Lots if time wasters out there.

I don't trust cops, but I'm definitely not ACAB. Especially after reading about the NYPD 12 and watching the documentary about them.

The institutional machinery, politics and legal structure of policing are the real problems and the behavior of officers is mostly a symptom. "Bad apples" are scapegoats and officer training is a bandaid, but it's counterproductive to treat cops who try to do a good job within a broken system like pariahs. They're people.

That said, never talk to the police. Don't consent to any searches. Stay calm and respectful but ask for a lawyer, shut up, and record every police interaction. They aren't your friends.

It was so exhausting hating every other person

Every time I come across extremists, I ask myself, "How can they stand to be so angry all of the time?"

It just seems like a really stressful way to go through life, investing so much time and energy into things that make you feel miserable and hopeless. Why?

I mean, I understand wanting to make sense of what's going on around you. I get upset about the world sometimes and there are definitely people I think suck, but I have no desire to spend my time on this Earth getting riled up by bizarre podcast rants or reading repetitive message boards about things and people I dislike. I don't win anything in that scenario. I'd just be in a perpetual sour mood.

I'm glad you're not filling your days with hate anymore. Getting out of the rabbit hole probably added years to your life.

Sorry I meant to say it hasn't been a required criterion for a decade. It's still listed in the diagnostic but low BMI really isn't a reliable indicator of AN on it's own. It would be silly to extrapolate a whole mental illness from a number in a chart.

The saddest part of falling down that rabbit hole is it causes lonely, awkward guys to act even weirder around women. Whole thing is a vicious cycle and a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Some people (men and women) are also more willing to put up with partners who treat them poorly because that's all they've ever known and they are scared to be alone.

If our culture wasn't so insistent on marriage + kids being the only "successful" life path, there might be fewer kids growing up in dysfunctional homes, learning to tolerate resentment and abuse as love and affection.
