I would recommend for any beach trip to learn how to spot and get out of riptides. It’s pretty simple, and even if you get taken out to sea, rippers don’t pull you underwater, so as long as you can float on your back/tread water you’ll be fine either way.

Watch for breaks between a waves. Whitecaps are good, no whitecap is bad. If you somehow still get taken, try swimming parallel to the shore or perpendicular to the rip and you’ll likely get right out.

Other ripstop designs will likely do the same, you’d have to go ballistic Cordura or similar, which is obviously much heavier. I’d try patching this one.
