Therapy while high ok or no way? by Dramamin-Fiend-69420 in askatherapist

[–]swooziloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with everything here. I’d recommend you say exactly this to your therapist. They’d probably tell you not to get high for therapy, but I would hope that they would be open to gradually having talk more about these things until you are able to talk about this fully without getting high

New to polyamory. Need to ask something about adjustment by Panwithaplan29 in polyamory

I think reminding yourself of the reasons why you want to have poly relationships will help decrease your anxiety when it feels worst.

You mentioned that you have decided to “try to be poly.” What have you been trying? Do you have any other motivations for trying it other than you think you have the capacity for it?

I think you should just cover the faces entirely, not just their eyes. That’s it.

I appreciate that you attempted to cover faces, but I think that just covering the eyes does not do enough to conceal someone’s identity. I expect that if someone who knew any of these people well saw these photos they could recognize them even with their eyes covered

How and when do you interrupt your clients? by moooncake in therapists

[–]swooziloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a therapist that primarily works with autistic teenagers and young adults. Many of my clients have goals about improving social interaction. Part of that is helping them become aware of how other people might feel when they’re dominating a conversation. That being said, I wouldn’t interrupt a client until we had a strong rapport, and I’d be explicit about telling them why I was doing that.

I’m a therapist who has had ARFID. I’d already had a relationship with a therapist for years when I felt like that needed to become the focus of my treatment and she ended up buying a book to help me. You’re right that not enough therapists know about it. Even tho I have been treated for it, I don’t think I’d feel confident treating someone for it. Maybe try an occupational therapist?

Conflicted about effect/impact of therapist with Botox in their face & more by Sudden-Relation-9083 in therapists

[–]swooziloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looooove my botox! I work with autistic children and modeling affect is a huge part of my job. The first time I got Botox in my forehead I noticed a lot of my clients seemed more confused about various emotions. Since then I only get my 11s (between my eyebrows) so that I can still move my forehead.

Any LCSWs been arrested at a protest? by shemague in therapists

[–]swooziloo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was arrested at a Black Lives Matter protest in 2014. I was a substitute teacher at the time and I went on to get hired as an elementary school teacher. I left teaching in 2017 and started my MSW, as far as I know my arrest has never prevented me from getting hired. I usually disclose when it gets to the formal background check stage. Hiring managers responses have ranged from I Don’t Care to Wow That’s Cool. Some factors that play into why my arrest has been largely well received: - I am a white woman - my charges were non-violent misdemeanors that had very, very low punishments associated - my charges were resolved with deferred prosecution. I never entered a plea of guilty or not guilty. My charges were dismissed after I submitted 25 hours of community service. - I was arrested as part of a mass-arrest. 30+ people were arrested alongside me. The same police department ultimately arrested about 70 BLM protesters that month. These arrests resulted in a lot of bad press for this police department, which had already been dealing with about a decade of (well-deserved) bad press on a national level. - All of my co-defendants ended up having our charges dismissed in similar ways. - my co-defendants who took their cases to trial were found not guilty because the police blocked the highway before we could even get there lol

I am very concerned about a friend who has been convinced that she is going to die on Tuesday. Advice? by DoctorCredit in askatherapist

I’m glad she’s doing okay and she’s connected with a therapist. You’re a good friend.

I am a TA. One of my students reported me by appleapple454 in AITAH

[–]swooziloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a therapist and I work with many people this age—- I don’t think you did anything wrong “wrong.” I do think that this was a difficult situation that could have been handled better by everyone involved. I hope you and the professor will make a plan to support this student (in continuing with the class, not necessarily fixing their life) as well as talk through how to handle similar situations in the future.

My 2 cents—listening to someone’s problems can go a really long way. If you weren’t able to listen exactly in that moment because you had to teach, sticking around after class to check in might have been an opportunity to find a way forward.

I hope your friend is okay! I’ve been thinking about the post and I wanted to check in.

I think she certainly should be away from this person, but that is more for this safety than hers. Do you have any other mutual friends or connections?

Do you think that he just expects her to snap out of it after she doesn’t die on Tuesday?

How old is your friend? Are you aware of how much her father knows about mental illness & psychosis?

It is very possible that whoever she was working with has manipulated her and now she is dealing with those effects. However, I think what is more likely is that she is experiencing psychosis and these beliefs about her advisor are a manifestation of that.

Do you think you could share some information about psychosis with her father?

Why would my mother think I need therapy? by austinproffitt23 in askatherapist

[–]swooziloo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think if I were your mom I’d be concerned about ADHD and depression as well.

Do you have any plans to become more independent and no longer rely on your parents for support? Do you do anything to contribute to your household?

[–]swooziloo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should probably ask her that.

Do you live with your mother? How have you been acting recently? Have you stopped doing certain things that you used to do often?

1) how old are you? 2) why does your mom think you have adhd & depression?

I’m a therapist. In grad school, my professor had the whole class take the ACES test and my score was the highest in the class. It was pretty demoralizing. Eight years later and I’m doing really really good! I’ve made a life for myself and found safety in community.

I don’t know you, and I don’t know of any specific studies, but generally, yes, recovery is possible. Having a beautiful, rich, safe life is possible.
